Summer discounts are out!!

Because all timeshares have to have a percentage offered to the public by Florida law and there isn't much of a demand for dvc for cash....

So that is a good, underused angle.

I was surprised on one of the DIS recommended DVC rental sites how "relatively" inexpensive some of the nicer places were as a straight up cash ("I will pay you X for 5 nights") was; I would think it wouldn't be THAT much of a hassle to add in the dining plan and tickets...right?

No it's easy...dining plan just has to be booked/paid for prior to checkin (I recommend against the dining plan typically) and tickets can be bought literally at anytime.

Ha! My kids (both 11, both boys) love the dining plan. In fact, when I asked them about a 2nd trip to Disney, food and resort were top of mind. I mean, the parks, sure - but park visits ranked 3rd behind food and resort (pools, activities, room).

As long as it works for you...great

Ok, so what am I missing here? You're paying about what I said a value room was worth. I'm trying to figure out if you agree with me or ?

LOL - I agree.

I'm happy that the summer discount dropped value hotels down to a price I am finding reasonable - which is swaying me to stay onsite. I had looked into it a little while ago, but the previous price was just enough extra that it pushed me to look into offsite options.

Also, there are distinct onsite advantages that are very real. I've surprised myself a little that I'm very seriously considering paying extra to stay onsite primarily for the "convenience" of luggage transfer and familiarity with the Disney product.

This is part of the "value". I stay on site because there are perks for doing so and that has value to ME. Maybe not to everyone, but I know exactly what I am getting with a Disney product. I also know exactly where it is and I find comfort in that. It's the "peace of mind" fee. Some people pay it in the resorts, some people pay it in the dining plan, and some people pay it for both, but everyone pays for it one way or another.

$700 a night?! I rather take that money and go to Disney sea or Paris. they have lost their mind.

This is one reason I am still investigating an onsite stay next year. A family of 5 can have 10 bags on southwest (not that we will need that many now), it is available if I need it. It is a lot easier to let ME handle it. But I still rent a car. Let the family Take ME, I go get the car, return it the day before I leave at the Hilton at DTD and all 5 take ME to return home. It can be a hassle getting your baggage checked at the hotel doing it this way, but its doable.

As of now looks like a cabin for us again based on my perceived value of everything.

How are you going to take ME for the return home? Are you going to walk over to DTD and take a bus back to your resort?

Depends. Many times my parents were there too, so my father would give me a ride back to my hotel. When not I did just that, longer walk than I original thought.

BUt I have to have a car. You know all those threads about busses that pretty much say if you don't like that about busses then rent a car. Well I am that guy and I always rent a car. Pretty much only use WDW transport for MK. But I also don't want to lug luggage around.

No I hear ya. We only use the bus for MK too and we drive everywhere else because I actually find driving far more convenient.

I've wondered, how is the traffic for cars during the mass after-Illuminations exodus? At least HS and AK have some staggering. Not everyone leaves after their shows.

I have not been in a while, but the last times I was there not horrible. I tend to skip the trams as well. Especially at night if it looks like the wait is more than a single tram we will typically walk out to our car. But the trams offer a form of staggering of their own. Plus a lot of people shop after illuminations.

Valid, but a major hotel price cut will still increase crowds further. Plus there will be a new complaint of no vacancy and having to plan a year out for a room.

I don't think you would see any significant increase in crowds. I don't think hotel price is keeping people from Disney, I think ticket price is. Plenty of people have no issues staying off site. I do think that people offsite are more apt to spend less days in the park, but I'm not sure it's enough to make a big difference.

I mean, just playing with numbers. So, first thing, lets take out the deluxe resorts (keeping AKL, OKW, Saratoga, Wilderness based on the original numbers proposed). You are talking 21,569 rooms that would see a discount. Now, lets assume an increase of 25% on room occupancy at those remaining rooms (not even sure that is possible, but we will roll with it). That means on average, 5,392 more rooms per night. Lets assume 3 people per room average. Last, lets assume on any given day, 25% of those extra rooms are going to a park when they would not have done so if they were off site. Assuming equal distributions to the parks, you are talking about an increase in 1,011 people per day at each park. I honestly think I may be assuming high in the number of people that would be adding park days if staying on site vs. offsite as well. This also does not factor in Swan/Dolphin, which would probably take a big hit (I would make the argument that the people not staying there anymore would have spent equal days at the park whether at a lower priced deluxe or the Swan/Dolphin).

Thanks for the response. Now I'm convinced I'm going to have to drive to a park or two if for no other reason than the trams. For some reason, the trams really stick out to me from my childhood visits. It'd be fun for my kids to do the same (though I'm sure it won't have the same impact).

it's really not too bad. I mean it's slow and you're going to need some patience, but I don't think it takes us more than 15 minutes to get out.

I imagine it beats standing on the bus holding my sleeping seven year old in one arm and the overhead rail in the other.

Yep.

In fact I just came from MK last night. I just waited until about 10:30 before I headed for the ferry (park close was at 10) and I walked right on to the ferry and right to my car and zipped on out of the parking lot and right onto 4.
