How strict is Southwest on weight? I know the max is 50. What if it is 55? Or 53?

Aren't they all pretty strict? We had to redistribute contents between bags once while we were checking luggage at our WDW resort. They were going to charge us a fee if we couldn't get it under. We always travel with luggage scales now. Repacking in line is not fun.

If you are over by more than a half a pound they are gonna charge you.
They may suggest taking something out and rearranging in order to avoid the fee.

Baggage weight is a union contract issue. They are strict.

I checked a bag going home last month...it was about 2 ounces under 50 lbs!!! The RAC guy just looked at me and grinned...said I was getting my money's worth out of that free bag...another 2 oz and I would be paying extra!!!! So, yes, they are very strict. Besides, do you think the airlines are going to miss any chance to charge you extra?? 2 oz over, or 2 lbs over...they don't care. Over is over!!!

Southwest allows 2 checked bags and one carry on. I usually take my Disney empty back pack that I got as a purchase with purchase item to add souvaniers in and use it as my carry on.

All airlines are strict on this. Anything over 50lbs (even a few ounces) will move the bag into the oversize/weight catagory.
Southwest charges $75.00 fee on over weight bags.

From southwest.com:
Weight and Size Allowance
Southwest will accept the first two checked bags for free provided that the bags do not exceed 50 lbs and 62 inches (L+W+H). Overweight items from 51 to 100 pounds and oversized items in excess of 62 inches but not more than 80 inches will be accepted for a charge of $75.00 per item one-way. Only one $75.00 charge applies if the piece is both oversized and overweight, regardless of the weight as long as it does not exceed 100 lbs. Excess baggage which is also overweight or oversized will be charged excess baggage plus the applicable oversize or overweight charge.

as mentioned it is a contract and safety issue

safety for the folks who have to load and unload your bags .....

Scales have been known to disagree with each other, even at different kiosks of the same airline at the same airport. We try to stay under 45 lbs just in case our luggage scale doesn't calibrate the same as the airline.
