When my son was a senior at a private high school, his best friend hung himself in the science room during lunch. He was a very intelligent, quiet, calm young man. He often had dinner with us, and seemed to not be comfortable around adults or strangers. His dispair that day was because he got a "B" on a test. Kids do things on the spur of the moment sometimes, and I am not sure they realize what they are really doing. That one act of despair changed my son's life. My son was one of the first to come along. The teacher had just cut the power cord down and was trying to resusitate the student. My DS ran to help with CPR. They got a heartbeat but no respiration. Two days later, he was declared brain dead, and they turned off the ventilator. Our son went from being a straight "A" student to nearly failing at least one of his classes that last quarter. He refused to go to college after that also. The school had counselors be with the kids for several weeks after that, but it took much longer than that for our DS. Now it is 10 years later, and DS is finally able to get his life back on track. He is in college and pulling down a 4.0! I just wish the young man who caused all of this knew how much he was loved by his friends.
