I'm trying to figure out what sling will be best. Baby due in 2wks, and I know I will be chasing a 2yr old also. We will also be traveling when the baby is 3 1/2 mos to the world. If anyone has a sling, which one and what do you like about it?

I had both a Bjorn and a Hotsling for my daughter. My DH preferred the Bjorn over the Hotsling, but I LOVED my Hotslings. I acutally had 2 of them and I used them until she was about 20 lbs. I found it easier to carry her when she was smaller b/c she could sleep in it. Check out their website for all the different ways to carry.

I wore ds in a Kangaroo Korner Adjustable Fleece Pouch (KKAFP) from the time he was 3 days old until he was about 18mo.

In between I also used a Moby Wrap and then I migrated to a Babyhawk Mei Tai... which we still use.

I believe that my KKAFP was my favorite carrier ever (I have two others as well)...and possibly the best money I spent on any baby gear (outside of the car seats).

My dh easily used the KKAFP and will use the Babyhawk (but I have to help him w/ it).

I don't like the Bjorns because they carry too low for both me and dh (both average height) and make our backs hurt.

This site is really helpful with info about baby carriers (message boards, descriptions, brands, etc.)...

Enjoy!

I'll second that website. Tons of useful info and boards to ask questions. My all time favorite carrier is a Kozy Mei Tai. I believe their website is www.kozycarrier.com You can wear them on the front when they are little and move them to your back when they get bigger.

I have a hotsling and a mayawrap. I love my mayawrap and so does dd. dd is 9mo and 21lbs and we use it all the time.

Ooohhhh! I love to read threads about babywearing here on DIS! Makes my heart sing!

We like any kind of unpadded ring sling. I don't like Over the Shoulder Baby Holders (ring slin) because of the padding. Much to my surprise, the unpadded are actually more comfy.

Have a happy, peaceful birth!

Loved loved LOVED my hotsling -- and i loved my ComfyJoey reversible pouch even more!!! The ComfyJoey (see comfyjoey.com) folded SO small, and I could toss it in the washer and dryer with no consequence!

The pouch styles are easier for sling "newbies" but the ring styles are more adjustable. Then there's the tied kind which are the most complicated but also the most flexible on how you wear them.

I had a pouch style and loved it! It was a Kangaroo Korner stretch cotton pouch. DS would go RIGHT to sleep when I popped him in there :thumbsup2

Loved my ergo..but also used a ring sling (which is easier to nurse in for sure) and also a hotsling. Also like using my babyhawk but find the tails kinda long..tend to drag when I'm getting tied up. My friend had an ergo and used the infant insert in it when the baby was real small.

I loved my peanut shell sling for the first few months then I got a Beco structured carrier and that was GREAT! I wish I'd had it early on as well. I still use it as a backpack for my 18 month old DD who weighs 28 lbs!

i love my mei tain sling, ds2 is now 11mths and is still so easy to carry in it. I did have a traditonal baby bjorn and hated it even as a newborn it would make my back ache if i wore it for more than 10 minutes. The mai tei even now i can wear him all day and not have any problems. I also agree the babywearer website is a fab resource.

my youngest was in a freehand mei tai from birth to 5/6 months(ish) and then we switched to a toddlerhawk (by babyhawk- it's their one designed for taller babies to be able to be carried into toddlerhood) as my baby boys are TALL and heavy (DS5 at 9 months was 28lb and taller than his older sister was at 2!!!!! DS17m is currently over 30lb and up to his 4 year old sisters shoulder- and my girls aren't short girls either.)

I like MT's because I can run (and have!) with baby in them in the event of a bolting preschooler (youngest dd was just short of 3, and eldest son just short of 4 when he was born- eldest son is SN and does need close watching when out) we have no car so we walk everywhere, I need to have hands free for bags & hand holding at roads.

As a newborn we "froggied" his legs inside and as he got bigger he went legs out- at 17 months he now goes on my back when wide awake or on my front if he's tired or it's raining hard enough to need to be inside my coat.

My DH can still carry our 5 year old in the toddlerhawk (I can't as he is biiiiig- he comes up to my upper rib cage already!) and my eldest daughter (age 10 going on 11) can carry the baby too so it's good for small mamas too (DD10 is around 4'11 and 75-80lb )

TBW is wonderful for advice and also a for sale/trade board to pick bargains.

just thought to add with babyhawk (and alot of mei tais) you can have a different fabric panel each side- I have one plain black & otherside pink & multicoloured scrollwork, another big orange pin wheel pattern one side (on orange straps) and grey & black flames on the other side (with pink straps... it's a 2 tone strap one- v.unusual custom one- DH got it me for valentines the other year!) it works well if you want something v.girly for yourself but want your dh to be able to wear without too many odd looks (although my DH wears our toddlerhawk pinkstraps and says real men wear pink LOL - as he points out, he's huge- no one is going to laugh at him.... except me!) We also had our toddlerhawk made with longer straps so DH can wear it as well as me (DH is a 56" chest)

I have never used a sling, but for the new baby we bought a Moby. I hope we like it, cause thats what we are planning on taking with us to the World in October.

I absolutely LOVED my Peanut Shell sling for that age. It is so comfy and my baby would just go right to sleep in there! Plus they make them in all cotton and have some really cool patterns. The website is www.goo-ga.com

I loved my peanut shell, it was so handy I used it with my son, from the time he was a day old up until now, I don't use it as much now, but sometimes he feels he needs to be held, while I'm busy doing something and it's perfect I just put him on my hip and continue doing whatever I was doing, He is a year now.
