Such a thing as a mild achilles rupture or just a PF symptom?

Before I go to my doctor and risk sounding like chicken little, I was hoping for some advice or personal experiences.

I've always had foot pain, even since I was a tiny young thing. No lasting power on my feet, just standing in heels for 5 minutes hurts like the dickens. Very tight calf muscles (and cankles, so yaaaay me :rotfl:) As I got older and overweight, it got worse, of course.

Then about five years ago I went up on the balls of my feet to grab something at the grocery store. I heard a loud POP and at first thought someone had run into the back of my foot/ankle with their grocery cart. Looked back, saw no one was there. I noticed my heel felt a little tender, but nothing big. Shrugged it off.

Since then, this has happened about twice a year, always when I go up on the balls of my feet. And it's even happened once on the other ankle. Each time it happens again, it hurts a little more...sharper, longer lasting. I finally looked it up and the only thing I can find that mimics this -- the loud pop with the feeling of being kicked hard in the heel -- is a rupture of the achilles. But everything I read about says you would be debilitated if that happened, unable to walk or in extreme pain. And I certainly can see just visibly that they're still intact! ;)

However, since this has started happening, my foot pain in general has gotten much worse. And oddly, it's gotten even worse in the past year after losing 25 lbs (through diet, not exercise, so increased activity isn't to blame). These days when I get up in the morning my ankles and feet are so stiff and painful it's all I can do not to fall down some mornings. And even with mild activity, like an hour or two shopping for instance, within a few hours of coming home, I'm limping from heel pain (back and bottom of foot) everytime I stand up and walk.

If it weren't for that popping/hitting issue, I'd just suspect this was Plantar Fasciitis. And I'd probably just keep trying calf/foot stretches. But that achilles-area thing troubles me.

So in short (too late!) I was wondering if it's remotely possible to have micro or minor tears of the achilles tendon that aren't disabling. Or is this just something that also happens with PF?

Thank you so much for any experience you can offer.

I would definitely let your doctor know about this.

I had that popping/pain thing happen once and it turned out to be a partial tear in the achilles tendon.

The potential danger, if that's what it is, is that someday your tendon might tear completely and require surgery to repair it. You might want to give your doctor a heads up - s/he might recommend physical therapy or something now to stave off future problems. (I had physical therapy and wore a boot for awhile.)

I'm no doctor, though, just someone who's been through something similar. Good luck!

I have PF and it is no fun. I do have it under control right now, and usually only suffer in the winter months. I am restricted to mainly tennis shoes (I wouldn't put on a pair of heels to save my life and haven't in years. I live in Crocs when not in my tennis shoes that I hate, too) right now and I take a wonderful anti-inflammitory to help relieve some of the symptoms.

You definitely want to have it checked in case it is someting more than the PF, before you end up not being able to walk at all.

Thanks so much for the info. I will make a doctor's appointment tomorrow just to be on the safe side.
