submersible missing near the Titanic

I feel bad for people who study hard and get a degree in journalism and then their entire profession is just smeared by people believing silly stuff. So sad! They are just doing their jobs and are your family, friends and neighbours. I'm sure there are some bad apples just like any profession and some media outlets are more entertainment or doing editorials. But most are just reporting the news.

I'm probably not the only one sick of hearing about "mainstream media". It's old. Not everyone in the field has some evil motive. Move on from it. It's ridiculous. People are so gullible.

To use a cliché, gaslighting. Say it often enough, people, some people, will believe you.

One test of relative objectivity is does the source issue corrections when challenged as to factual accuracy. Those that do so promptly are generally more reliable than those that don't--or worse still, repeat the misinformation as if repetition will make it correct.

"some" are entertainment & "most" are just reporting the news.... I don't believe this to be true, not that they are lying, but they are hugely selective on what they want to inform the public about, they don't just "report the news" they report what they want to report ("they" being the 6 decision makers that own 90% of the media). They report what's good for their bottom-line & shareholders, NOT what's most important to the public. ;)

I'd say switch the key words from "some" are just reporting the news & "most" are entertainment.

I strongly disagree. Not sure why you are using a hashtag? This isn't twitter.

I've never watched it as it's American. I would watch a Canadian news source. But from what I have heard it's labeled as entertainment and many of the anchors are giving editorials not neutral news. Isn't it more political commentary style station?
Yes…it’s not really considered to be a hard news channel, but neither is MSNBC…the “other side” of the news entertainment complex if you will. We Americans are on a “choose your news adventure “ path…and have been for some time. It’s just getting much, much worse…increasingly polarized.

Sounds like it.

Yeah, it's all because of advertising. News channels really exist in order to sell ads, as do newspapers, etc. It's been that way for a long time, but the 24 hour cable stations really took it to the next level. It is news for entertainment purposes.

I visited Japan a few years back, and was there when that big earthquake hit. We did feel it, but we were in Tokyo so it was safe there. Anyway, I did have on the news, and while it was in Japanese, it was incredible how different it was from our news. It was not slick & polished like most things in Japan. The anchors stood to the side and let a scientist talk for a solid half-hour. He had flip charts and the hosts only ocassionally chimed in with a question. It was incredibly dry, straight-forward, and fact driven. It was also very eye-opening compared to what I am used to seeing here.

I do have a lot of respect for explorers. Going into an experimental watercraft and risking your life helps technology along. Whatever the outcome, I expect others will learn from it and improve.

I guess I don't completely see the point of risking my life to see the titanic ruins. The 5 in the sub only get to see it on a monitor so why not create something unmanned and watch it on a monitor somewhere you don't risk your life? There's a million ways one can die, but implosion or oxygen deprivation at the bottom of the ocean in a tight metal can sounds pretty awful. I hope if they are alive and running out of oxygen they don't turn on each other down there.

Certainly is! Totally agree!
