Is the 16 dead in Manitoba leading the news? It is here as it’s local.

The sub is off the Canadian coastline and the navy is involved in rescue. Plus it’s a unique story. Makes sense it’s making the news here.

I think this story is also big news because it's truly international--the people on board are several nationalities, the rescue efforts are involving several countries--it's a global story. That, plus, the many unusual "hooks"--the Titanic, billionaires, a daredevil adventure, the oxygen countdown, etc.

Agreed. It's a unique story that is still being unraveled so it is making the news in North America. Doesn't mean people don't care about other deaths around the world.

Regarding the media and their "focus", people are talking about the sub. Look on this board. We have a 7 page thread about the sub. The migrants? Is there a thread about it? Are people following and talking on the thread? If people aren't discussing it (and apparently the information is out there), should the news take their limited time to talk about it?

People say they want the media to cover certain stories ("feel good" stories for example), but most people will watch/read the "crime and slime" stories. With so many options for viewers, media will try to show what gets them eyeballs.

I disagree. Speaking as someone who spent a decade working directly for a "news outlet", and over two decades after that supporting one and know people who work for news outlets, MOST news outlets are trying to report the stories they think viewers/readers want to know or should know. MOST try to present both sides of an issue.

There are definitely some "news outlets" that are biased (and let it show), but when you look at all of the local television news stations, local radio news, and local papers, it really isn't realistic to say MOST of them are biased and carry an agenda.

People scream 'bias' these days no matter what. A news outlet can report verbatim what a politician said and someone will cry 'bias.'. A news outlet can simply report the results of some study done by scientists and someone will cry 'bias.' Are there some suspect sources? Sure. But I think most of the mainstream I see seems pretty reasonable. I think journalism is a really admirable profession, and many journalists worldwide put themselves in great danger to report on things like wars, natural disasters, and corruption so that the world can have a better idea of what is taking place. When someone denigrates the entire industry, they are showing their own bias.

The noises were (are?) being picked up not far from the last transmitted location, so that’s a pretty strong lead.

It’s possible the search teams may have ruled out any ships in the area. Not to mention that banging was picked by sonar deployed in the water.

They found a debris field in the search area. It’s unsure at this time if it’s the Titan.

If the Titan imploded, wouldn't there have been floating debris by now?

The Coast Guard has just said they have discovered a debris field. They are not sure yet if it's the Titan.

A second ROV is coming in with better capabilities to check out the site.

Interesting debate. I started this thread because I thought it was a unique situation. I read 2 online national newspapers and see a lot of stories that aren't discussed here. I read the boat capsized story. It is very bad, but other than saying how horrible I don't know what else to discuss about it. There was an explosion in China today. I'm not sure the disboards needs to reflect all the news. And if you don't hear a story, don't blame the media, look at where you are getting news.

Just saw this on the Coast guard twitter account. If it’s the titan, at least they didn’t suffer.

UNTIL the debris is correctly identified to be whatever it is, the search by all entities is still ONGOING.

The French ship that has a side sonar is still checking out the banging that was heard.

The Canadian coast guard is still doing their air/surface search as well as sending out underwater sonar buoys.

And the US coast guard is doing whatever they are doing.

I'm not seeing that from where I get my sources from here in Canada. Except a few very far leaning sources but they are advertised as such.

Sad connection - the NY Times is reporting that Stockton Rush's wife Wendy is the descendent of 2 people who died on the Titanic -

Survivors of the disaster recalled seeing Isidor Straus refuse a seat on a lifeboat when women and children were still waiting to flee the sinking liner. Ida Straus, his wife of four decades, declared that she would not leave her husband, and the two were seen standing arm in arm on the Titanic’s deck as the ship went down."
