Subaru spare key...Highway robbery! Any discounts??

I do wonder if some of the latest unlocking systems, keys and remotes have gone too far. My neighbor had a remote starter on her Tahoe and twice set her purse down and triggered the starter, and her truck sat idling all night in the driveway, thank God it wasn't in the garage.

I have a Tahoe and cant imagine how this can happen once yet twice.
Not disclaiming what youre saying but to remote start my SUV I have to press the lock button twice then hit the start button all while in pretty close proximity to my vehicle.

Not an easy task . Maybe there is something wrong with your neighbors remote start.

It sounds like a poorly installed after-market system. Every system I've seen will shut off if the key isn't inserted within a few minutes. And, unless the key is present, they either won't let you shift the car or the engine will shut off when you hit the gas.

Exactly. If I put the car in gear without having the "key" with me, it kills the engine. You can't go anywhere without the fob. I can also touch a button under the trunk and release it without a key, if the fob is within a certain area. I love not having to fumble for my keys.

I highly suspect it is an aftermarket remote starter, everything from the wheels to the running boards to the stereo appear to be aftermarket. However, I know in the summer when it's 100 degrees she routinely starts it with the a/c on for 10 to 15 minutes before she comes out. Although it is illegal to leave a car running an unattended here........it violates Smog laws.
But, other than to warm up the interior, or cool it off, since they started combining computers with fuel injection , cars don't need any warm up time, they want you to start up and gently drive away.

One other thing (besides the dang key price) that I don't like on my new car is the little dash light that stays on until the engine is "warmed up". You aren't supposed to drive it til the light goes out, and with how cold it's been, I'm like...I gotta GO! and yet my little blue light is still on. Sigh....Even the book says to let it warm up til the light goes out, although my DH disagrees.

Well……there probably IS a way.

We have a Toyota Sequoia and it came with 2 keys. You have to have the FOB and the computer chip key for each set. They are almost $450 to replace.

I lost one set. It has never been found……DH was NOT happy.

So, off to research he went.

He found out that you can purchase a non-programmed FOB from many places, including dealers on ebay for about $50. You can purchase the key for about $10-$15.

Now, you do have to find someone willing to cut it for you. I had to sign a waiver saying if they cut it wrong they weren't liable. Fine, I signed.

Then I had to take it home and DH YouTubed how to program it himself.

They were the wackiest instructions:

Hold down the middle button on the FOB,
turn your car on and off 3 times
open and shut your door twice
do cartwheels behind the driver's front latch twice
spin around blindfolded and hop on one foot 3 times

(ok, the last 2 I made up, but the rest of the instructions were equally as wacky IMO)

BUT…….

It WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cool1:

So, instead of paying $450, I paid roughly $65-$70.

We did the same thing for our Ford van. $50 on eBay, got it cut and programmed it at home. Do some research, hopefully you can get it figured out.

Can the batteries die in these key fobs and can they be replaced? Just recently, my key fob has been registering as a "bad key" and won't start the van. It unlocks it just fine, but won't start. Luckily, we just found the other fob that had been "lost" in my winter coat from last year.

Wow, I haven't seen a COLD light on a car since my mom got rid of her 1960 Buick.

We had to replace the battery in my remote a while back. Look in your manual.

I just replaced the battery in my Subaru key. It's just a watch type battery that I bought at Walmart. It was super easy.
