Stupidest Question ever asked on the Dis

General sows chicken

That's how everyone I know up here says it and they always get the right stuff;) But what do we know our specialty is lobstah and chowdah! And it's always wicked good:rotfl:

My Chinese friend who owns a chinese restaurant in NH calls it General Gow's

Darn. I thought you wanted to know the stupidest question ever asked.

I was all ready, darn it. :headache:

This is why I order the mandarin combination or happy family, I'm fairly confident of the pronunciation.

I don't think by a long shot this is the stupidest question asked on the Dis.

snipped

I agree. Sometimes the questions I've seen floor me. I figure they have to be playing jokes because there is absolutely no way they could be serious.

In New England it's General Gao. I've never seen "Tso" or "Chow"

Tasty stuff, no matter what it's called, though!

I pronounce the t then so. :confused3 Hubby just tells them he'd like that General's chicken.:lmao: They seem to know what he is asking for.:lmao:

Better than asking for the Colonel's chicken!! LOL!!!

I call it "General Cho" but have no idea where I got that pronounciation from!

Hmmm. I'm in CT and I've never see that. We have General Tso's chicken.

I usually avoid pronouncing it because no matter how I say it someone wil correct me... so I say Generals chicken or C25 Combo meal. :confused3 :rotfl:

ETA: Definitely not the dumbest question ever, I would love an official answer!!!

Hubby says it's the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese pronunciation. He says it entirely different than anything I've seen here. :)

He's not Chinese (half Korean), but he went to a private missionary middle school in Taiwan, where they learned Mandarin, and I imagine in a teaching/learning situation like that, they were taught the differences in how things are pronounced (unlike someone who is perhaps a native speaker of one dialect and would therefore perhaps say "it's that" and not even think of the other ways of pronouncing things).

From Wiki:

The dish is predominantly referred to as Generals Chicken in most Philadelphia area Chinese Restaurants. In parts of Canada, this dish is known as General Tao's, and less commonly, General George's chicken. More specifically in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the dish is also called General Wolfe Chicken, after the 18th century British Army officer known for his victories over the French in Canada. In other regions and restaurants, it is also known or mispronounced as General Tsao's, General Zhou's, "General Tao", General Mac's, General Gao's, General Gau's, Chou's, General Tzo's, General To's, General So's, General Joe's, Jordan Chicken, and General Toso's. It is also known as General Chow's and General Tso's prominently in the New Jersey area and simply General Chicken in parts of Northern California. At the United States Naval Academy, the dish is served in the main mess hall, King Hall, as "Admiral Tso's Chicken," reflecting a nautical theme. The Pei Wei chain of Chinese restaurants has a "Pei Wei Spicy" preparation (which can be served with chicken or other types of meat and vegetables). The menu says "our version of General Chu" in parentheses. It is made with "chile vinegar sauce, scallion, garlic, snap peas, carrot."[12] P.F. Chang's China Bistro, the parent company of Pei Wei, also uses the spelling "General Chu" for its version.[13]

There's much, much more information there if you're interested!

DH once asked the waiter "what is the difference between General Tso's chicken and sesame chicken, and was told sesame chicken has sesame seeds!:lmao:

I've always pronounced it "sow" with the vowel ow like couch. My next guess would have been "zhow." I thought ts was "zh" - not "ch."

Where are all the Dis'ers who speak chinese? There must be some!

I pronounce the t then so. :confused3 Hubby just tells them he'd like that General's chicken.:lmao: They seem to know what he is asking for.:lmao:

Because you have to go to the other place if want the Colonels chicken.

Shows you what I know!

I always thought the stupidest question ever asked on the Dis was "What time is the 3 O'clock parade?"
