My children are going to bring their mp3 players & nintendo ds's on their carry-on.....can they play them on the plane???? (Sorry haven't flown in 26 years & I know you can't use a cell phone so I was wondering about other stuff.)

They can play them at the following times:

When you board up until they close the flight door.

Then once the plane reaches a certain altitude, they can be used. The FA will make an announcment.

They must be turned off again when the pilot starts the landing procedures. The FA will make an announcement.

We took the Nintendo DS and two DVD players. If you are flying on American they have plug ins ports in the seats that can run the electronics off the cigarette lighter plug. I was very excited about this feature since the DVD players only had 2 1/2 hours batteries and then I wouldn't have to try and charge them for our next flight. Although I forgot the plugs at home :confused3 what was I thinking? All worked out. Other airlines might have this, but I don't know for sure.

Sure - you just can't use them during takeoff and landing. There will be announcements when you can and can't use them. Just make sure everybody has headphones.

::yes:: I'm leaving in exactly 2 weeks and will be bringing the gameboy advanced for my DS4. I just got off the phone with SouthWest and was told the same thing. I think my son will be too occupied looking out the window on take off and landing to be concerned with playing with his gameboy advanced (I hope).

Just a warning. The plugs on the airlines are not exactly the same as the cigarette lighter plugs. There is a difference in the configuration so your plugs may or may not work....

I know USAir's airbus models have an outlet, but you need an adaptor, it's not a regular plug or a cigarette lighter plug.

I didn't realize that the plugs were different and needed adapters. Since I forgot our cingarette lighter adapters I didn't look at the outlets very closely. Interesting..If we fly again soon I will have to look into that. Thanks for the heads up!

The altitude level for using your 'portable electronic devices' is 10,000 feet. You can cheat on the FA announcement. I know that Delta will ring 2 or four bells when you hit 10K.

On a related note - they will still make the announcement on even teh shortest of flights. I have flown from Cincinnatti to both Lexington and Louisville, KY. Each flight is exactly 20 minutes in duration. But at 10,000 feet, the flight attendant will make her 'you can turn them on' announcement.

TWO MINUTES later, she makes the 'you gotta turn them off' announcement. Must be some kind of FAA thing. But the dumbest announcement is the 'due to the short duration of the flight, there will be no beverage service'. Well, duh!!!!! :confused3
