Outside of a trip with my wife to Port Orleans we've always stayed in a big RV at FW on family trips. We love the outdoors, the boat rides to MK and being able to stay longer. Plus the lodging truly was our familiar home away from home (well, technically my parents.) However my folks are planning to sell their RV so I'm now having to look at other options.

I've gotten spoiled to longer on-property trips at WDW but that's not exactly inexpensive. I'm increasingly tempted to go the avenue of renting DVC points so we can stay longer, but outside of online pics/vids I really don't have a sense for the size of the units.

Would 2 adults and 2 kids (9 and 6) be too much for a studio room for a stay of longer than a week? A studio has roughly has the same square footage as their 40' RV. But it would be a completely different experience so I'm not sure if we'd feel too cramped in a studio for that long.

It is always a bit interesting to sleep in the same room when you are used to some sort of division! But some of the studios are roomy - I think OKW is about the biggest.

It is all personal preference. I am on the "yes, you can" side, (DVC studio is a lot better than a value resort room )
others would go as far as saying you need a 2BR as a minimum. (In order to give the kids real beds and their own bathroom)

I would only do it at OKW, you get 2 queen beds. The others have a queen bed and a double sleeper sofa.

An RV user might prefer the flexibility of a pull-out couch (actual place to sit and watch TV in the day, sleeping space at night... But as noted, a pull out is generally less comfortable than a bed.

I enjoy spending time on the balcony, so its not like you are only in the room.

I would tend to avoid BLT studios (among the smallest studios) and the smaller Value studios at AK (3' shorter living/bed space)

You know, we stayed in regular hotel rooms with our 2 kids while they were young and never felt all that cramped. A studio is actually a little bigger than most hotels rooms.

We didn't purchase DVC till we were empty nesters, but I can honestly say that a studio would have worked just fine for us when our kids were still with us. Just don't stay in a 1-bedroom FIRST...it will spoil you. :goodvibes

Hi Parrotheader :)

I grew up camping with my parents in a 32' RV towed by a mini-motorhome. I know where you're coming from in regards to wanting to stay onsite and the size of the accommodations.

DVC is a good match for those who love to camp at Ft W but for one reason or another no longer can. The studios are about the same as a long camper, less storage, no full kitchen. My first few stays were all in studios with myself and 3 kids (17,10,7) Space was no tighter than camping. I first started DVC by comparing to Ft Wilderness' "cabins" and found I liked them better as they're so open and the doorway to the outside is down a hall-like area. The only things I really miss now in those studios from camping are having a full kitchen (I have discovered the 1 bedrooms) and being able to step out my door right into nature. But then again, the view from each resort is different - our last trip to VWL had us on ground floor and we had a deer come right up to the fence. And you won't find a better place to people watch than the BWV boardwalk views - a whole different sort of nature going on there :)

Kidani and OKW have the largest studios. The 1 bedroom units at all resorts are ~amazing~ (if you try them you will find yourself wondering why you camped in the first place ).

Every resort has it's own feel. In my opinion the Villas at Wilderness Lodge are equally as wonderful as the Fort, but in their own charming way. Plus there's a jogging trail, buses and boats to get you directly over to the lakeside of the Fort anytime you want.

I suggest not only that you rent points, but that you make your trip a split stay to enjoy a couple resorts. If you find yourself down at the SSR offices considering buying in - make sure you've checked out the resale prices before drinking the lemonade :)

ETA: I often split our stays between 2 resorts (makes our trip feel longer). I just want to mention, when our trip involves VWL, it has to be the last one we experience - never want to leave :)

Thanks all for the responses.

Hakepb is right in that I don't mind the idea of having to deal with a fold-out. As an RV'er that's a non-issue. And we'd probably bring an inflatable mattress just in case they didn't like the bed anyway.

Given the age of our kids we'd prefer be in the MK area if at all possible so we'd probably be looking at WL or BLT. We ventured over to WL regularly so I know it VERY well. But I also like the idea of being able to monorail/walk to MK from BLT. If it was just me and my wife I'd be at the Boardwalk in a nano-second. Thanks twinklebug for the idea of a split stay. Never considered that. I'm assuming once you check out of one you can check your bags at the other until your room's available?

We're still in the early planning stages. There may still be a chance they reconsider on selling the RV, but I'm not counting on it this time and want to have other options ready.

I think you would be fine in a studio. We have stayed in a value, a moderate, a studio, and a 1br with our two kids. We don't spend a lot of time in the room, and we try to stretch our points (without compromising our happiness). Of course the 1 br (especially at Animal Kingdom) is our favourite!

So...personally I think the kids will be ready to kill each other unless you are in a condo style DVC where the 9 yr old can step outside to get away from the 6 year old by Day 5. I know with our DD's early rising habits we cannot, and could not, share a room.

I would definitely go for OKW - BLT rooms are smaller and odds of getting into WL are low at 7 month window unless it is low season or you're an owner.

We stay in studios regularly with my son (9) and niece (14) for 10-14 days at a time and have never had a problem. Mind you, we are not ones to hang out in our hotel either. We have stayed with them at BLT, AKV, BWV

We're only a family of 3 but only use studios and I love the kitchenettes for breakfasts. They're much better than a regular hotel room. We have tried them all and I definitely have my opinions about each of them.

While OKW may have 2 beds I didn't care for the actual room layout. There is a lot of floor space but the kitchenette counter area was small & most annoying to me was that the bathroom is all in 1 room there so if someone is in there nobody else can do anything about getting ready. We prefer to have the vanity sink area outside of the toilet & shower. It's just more efficient. And heaven forbid that DH gets in there first!:scared1: Nobody else will want to go in for half an hour!:rotfl: We did not care for how spread out the resort is and the walk up to the main pool can be a pretty good schlep depending on where you are put for your stay.

We like AKV to save points sometimes (and it is beautiful) but we prefer Jambo House over Kidani as far as AKV goes. We tried a value size unit once for 3 nights and I couldn't wait to get out of it. It is noticeably smaller - DO NOT DO A VALUE SIZE FOR 4 PEOPLE FOR THAT LONG!! One of my peeves about Kidani goes back to the bathroom layout and the kitchenette. At Kidani the toilet has its own room but the sink area is combined with the shower. Kinda weird. Still not our preferred layout. Also, the kitchenette area in Kidani is REALLLLY small and the microwave is miniature size and sink is not the usual "bar sink" size but is a small bowl shaped basin - it's difficult to even wash out the coffee pot. One final note about AKV regardless of which building you are in - there are a TON, I mean a TON of large pillows all over the sofa and the bed and you have to PUT them somewhere at night. We end up stacking them in corners and shoving them under the bed...but I find them annoying to deal with when you come in late at night and all you want to do is to fall into bed. Finally, we like being able to go to the Mara (counter service) at Jambo. It is one of the best CS places onsite and is not so convenient to get to from Kidani.

We really liked our studio at VWL. It was pretty spacious and the kitchenette countertop space was ample (probably at least a foot wider than most units). It also had 2 large closets which was really nice to be able to put stuff away - I don't think any other studios have 2 closets. It has our preferred bathroom layout too with the vanity area outside of the toilet & shower. If you can get into VWL you would like it there. Close to MK...peaceful...woodsy. :thumbsup2

We stayed in a BLT studio last spring break for its proximity to the MK and the monorail...nice location but SMALL unit. Was glad we were only 3 and only there for 6 nights. The bathroom is small, it is all in 1 room and there is very little vanity storage area. The kitchenette area there tho is AMAZING. VERY big and lots of countertop and storage. If you plan on doing any meal prep in the room this could be a consideration over space. But you really have to like each other a lot and share a bathroom well. OH, and the pool at BLT is a joke. It is really small and has very little personal space. We ended up walking over to the Contemporary and using that pool as it was soooo much nicer. Plenty of space and lots of chairs.:thumbsup2

BCV has the best pool and the studios are nice. BCV is tied for first place for us with VWL for our 2 favorites. The studios are of ample size and have our preferred layout plus there's the walk to the back entrance of Epcot and the pool. BCV is a win-win for us.

Our home resort is SSR and we like it just fine. The room had plenty space and the layout is good...we tend to visit DTD more when we stay there as it's so convenient. We have not tried the Treehouses yet as we never take a car but you may like one of those one day. I don't really have any big gripes about SSR. We like the Grandstand area there.

We also liked BWV just fine when we tried it last summer. We liked being able to walk to Epcot but when we went it was August but we had storms EVERY afternoon and they shut the boats down as long as there is thunder and lightening so that was sort of a pain. We liked the pool / slide and being so close to the boardwalk. Dining options were good on the boardwalk but basically non-existent at the pool. But the studio itself was good.

Outside of the WDW resorts we have also tried Vero and HHI - both of those resorts have enormous studios that are the best layouts and sizes available. But of course those don't apply to you in this case. We will be trying out VGC and Aulani this summer - can't wait to compare them to all the others!! As far as the studios at WDW we like BCV and VWL best then probably SSR. We like different resorts for different reasons.

Our very 1st onsite WDW stay was at POR and we had 3 kids in 1 room there...it was a touch cramped but very do-able (we cruise a lot and will have 3 or 4 to a cabin...talk about cramped!!!). We bought DVC shortly after the POR stay and have always done a 1BR or 2BR since then...but........
Xmas of 2011 we booked a 2BR and shared it with MIL and FIL. My plan was for us to use the 1BR like we always had, with the 3 kids out on the pull-outs in the living room and DH and I in the master while MIL and FIL had the studio part (a 2BR is a 1BR plus a studio). MIL could not fathom all 3 kids sleeping on a pull out (which is what we had always done until then anyway as we had always booked a 1BR) while she had a perfectly good bed being wasted in her studio, but none of my 3 teens wanted to share a room with grandma and grandpa...so DH and I took the studio with our twin DDs and gave the master to MIL and FIL. That was not how I wanted to spend my Xmas trip to WDW (I so look forward to sitting in the big jetted tub), but it wasn't too bad. We travel a lot with our DDs (who play travel club softball) and always are in a regular hotel room with all 4 of us...so it can be done, but we do get spoiled by having those 1BR or 2BR villas (which since that Xmas trip we book a 2BR just for our 5 family members).

So the studio will be fine for you guys and your kids are still young enough that it won't be too bad (once they are teens and spend a ton of time in the bathroom and like to stay up late on their Ipods/cellphones and sleep late...well then your own separate space will be coveted). I think most studios are comparable to the POR room you stayed in...some DVC studios are larger than others. There is a sticky on the DVC resorts page that tells you the SF of each studio (OKW are nice and spacious and if you rent points from an OKW owner, you can book 11 months out and get near HH-hospitality house)...here-> http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2823609

We stayed in a studio Dec 20-27 and normally stay in a one bedroom but with points being that high...we opted for the studio. It was just fine. VWL studio was very spacious. They had four drawers so each of us took one and two closets. One very large. I bought a shoe organizer to put over the door of the bathroom so we could store stuff. I also had a xmas tree etc. It worked great. No complaints at all. Yes...I prefer a one bedroom but a studio is definately a good option. I figured we have cruised several times and those rooms are SMALL and we have a great time!

And FYI on VWL.. There are a couple of studios on an inside corner (by stairs or elevator?) that have no room outside for the balcony, so they just have a window instead of the slider.
I love balcony time in the AM within coffee, so no balcony would really bother me, but chances are low you get one of those rooms.

An avid camper for most of my life, I don't equate the stay in a studio with 4 people for 8-9 days verses an RV to be the same at all!

The only similarities is you will spend "most" of your time not in the room but the time you do spend in it will be on top of each other, for me that's not an enjoyable vacation! At least in an RV when the kids are in bed, the adults can continue talking, enjoying the evening by the camp fire, a studio won't offer that option. For us, a day or 2 at best but 8-9 days in a studio with 4 people, you might as well get the stay jacket ready!

Some people manage it just fine, it's just not for me!

Port Orleans rooms, where you have stayed, are 315 sq ft. DVC studios at BWV, SSR, VWL, and BCV are in the 355 to 360 range, AKL is in the 359 range for most rooms but only 315 for the small number of value rooms. BLT is 340, and OKW is in the 380 range. Personally I could not take a studio for four for that length of time but as others note they would be fine with it. Just try to remember Port Orleans. The DVC rooms are bigger, but it is still the same issue: how well will you feel being in a single room with four people for an extended length of time.
