Oh and here is the link to the federal program….
yes some rules apply, you degree most be useful for public service and they expect that you pay some of your loan back before the rest of us have to pay it for you.

Yes, yes, we all know what it says in theory. But in practice, it isn't working as intended. My SIL and BIL are both teachers; it took them 17 and 21 years, respectively, to get their loans forgiven under the 10-year forgiveness program. The IDR forgiveness program, which has a longer time horizon to begin with, basically isn't being applied at all. The last report I saw said a couple hundred out of millions of eligible borrowers had successfully gotten their loans forgiven. Talking about these programs based only on the official guidelines is like talking about taxes based on the IRS tax tables while ignoring deductions, credits and loopholes.

I know there are a lot home 28 year old teacher in my town that just had the masters paid for ….

With any government program if you don’t do it exactly as they request they say NO!

This is really simple!

There is a program in this country where the federal government will pay for you to go to college. You can Get a degree in anything you want.

All you have to do is :
Apply

Put your hand up and say ,

I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

You then write a blank check to the federal government in the amount of anything up to including your life, or worst.

After four years you thank the government and go to school for free….

Paying for any who has not gone through that hardship, or atleast provided positively to the democratic process that allows us all to have these freedoms, seems to do a discredit and dishonor to those that have given their life so other can complain ….

So like. Voting? Or having jobs in the public sector?

Everyone should realize at this point that there are many medical conditions that render you unable to serve in the US Military. Also I think we should have a better system than having people willing to die to pay for college.

That's ignoring all the points in this thread about predatory practices. No one goes into this thinking they're getting a free ride, but no one goes into this thinking they're going to end up paying twice what they owe and/or not having their loans forgiven by programs that promised they would do just that.

Otherwise you're allowing higher education to just be the realm of the already wealthy (which it was completely created for and don't think for a minute there aren't people that wouldn't love if it were the case again) and the class gaps will just continue to grow.

How about a system where people are just willing to pay back what they agreed to borrow.
You mean like in a society where Adults (yes 18 and up) have to make good decision, and when they don’t they have to pay for their mistakes?

That would be awesome. I bet it would go a long way to making people a lot nicer and more tolerant of others !

Nobody should sign a contract without KNOWING what they are agreeing too. What they “think” about it doesn’t matter one iota.
If you don’t understand it then don’t sign it, don’t cry ignorance when your bill comes due. Suck it up and pay for the services you received, don’t be mooching off the taxpayer for your mistakes. Own up to them and be responsible for them yourself.

I think referring to military service as a government program for a free education discredits and dishonors those who served, including those have given their life for this country. Sadly, it also underscores why the majority of enlistees come from poor households - because the higher education system is so messed up.

ETA: I realize that the offer of a free education is only one of the reasons most enlistees come from poor households, but it is a significant one.

It's baffling to me that you're missing the point here. The government offered a program to wave the payments for people who got certain jobs and paid in for ten years. People did that. Ten years later the government basically reneged. How is that the fault of the people that trusted the system? They knew what they were agreeing to. The system took advantage of that. The system was broken and there was no way anyone would know that for ten years.

Are you familiar doctrine of Caveat Emptor?

I don’t believe I can buy into the idea Dept of ED being a predatory lender.

I do buy into the idea of people spend ridiculous amounts of money to get worthless degrees, and expecting someone to bail them out.
