Will be at the WDW with my 5 yr old grandson in early June. Just him & I. On the fence about renting stroller from outside company. I am fairly young Nana (52) and in good health & good shape . My concern would be having a lightweight stroller and one that is easy to open and close as I will have it and grandson on bus. I haven't used a stroller alone in many years so easy open and close is important. My daughter has a stroller that would take a rocket scientist to open and close. Lol. Anyway any suggestions on what type stroller would fit the bill here for me, if any?

I would definitely rent one from an outside company! I took my kids alone when they were 4 and 6 for the first time, and brought one from home. I was so glad to have it. I can't comment on what type, but it seems most are pretty easy to fold up for the bus. Are you sure the one your daughter has is so hard to open and close? If you could bring your own that's nice, but otherwise I'd definitely have one! Worst case you rent in parks, but they have hard seats (my kids have fallen asleep in the stroller at Disney even older), and not as easy to maneuver to me.

For just you and a 5-yr-old, I'd use a basic umbrella stroller. Easy fold, lightweight, easy to bring on the bus and keep track of the kid. Chances are he'll want to walk more than ride, and you can use it for your day bag. Another option is to rent a stroller in the parks; you'll have it as needed around the park, but not to/from buses.

Enjoy your vacation!

Didn't think a 5 year old could even fit in an umbrella stroller & if so, wouldn't think it would be very comfy. Especially if he fell asleep. No?

If you rent from an outside company, like Orlando Stroller rental, you can rent a citi mini. The fold is really easy. You pull on the handle in the seat that is clearly labeled "Pull here to fold." I feel like this is an easy stroller to push and don't have any issues with it, but I have friends that disagree. I would rather have something that folds easily and pushes well over the lightness of an umbrella stroller. I feel like they are much harder to push than the citi mini.

I would rent a Citi Mini, especially for an older child. Most of the umbrella type strollers are not nearly as easy to maneuver particularly with a heavier child. I took my oldest by myself when he was 5 and didn't get a stroller. It wasn't awful, but it would have been better to have had it. He got tired and we took breaks but I think he would have had an easier time if I had the stroller to use. We have a double for my 5 year old twins and it's very handy to have in the parks.

I would suggest something like a City Mini (if your gradnson still fits those height/weight requirements), or a City Select. I believe companies like Kingdom Strollers carry both. The folds on those strollers is *very* easy (you can do it one handed). They aren't as light as an umbrella stroller, but they're not too heavy to easily life up on to buses either.

(FWIW, our daughter is 4.5 and the City Mini still works great for her. That's the stroller we have for her at home.)

ETA: I would also add that when we're at Disney, we tend to have DD in the stroller from land-to-land, but park the stroller in the land once and leave it in one place until we're ready to move on to the next land. Now that she can walk (she didn't learn how til she was 3.5), we walk from ride to ride within a land, then retrieve the stroller before moving on to the next land.

For sure a citi mini, very easy to fold and while not as light as a umbrella way more comfy for your grandson. We rented a double last trip which my 5 yr old fit comfortably in

Great! Thank you so much. The easy folding helps me make my decision. Great idea to leave the stroller in one spot & walk the lands. He can certainly do that & would be much easier on both of us. So I can just park the stroller at a ride entrance with the other strollers & just leave it there?

We have a Maclaren Quest and my 6yo rides in it. He's very tall for his age and weighs right at 50lbs. We have taken it on numerous disney trips as well as to all day zoo trips, etc.

I would consider checking out something like that or even a Maclaren Volo. You can get one for fairly reasonable at AlbeeBaby, using a coupon at buybuybaby or even looking on Ebay. They are lightweight and I can push it with one hand with him in it.

Personally, I wouldn't rent a City Mini for a 5-year-old. We have one at home and while my older DD could still fit in it at 5, she was right on the edge of being too tall. (She couldn't use the sun shade at all.) We also used one at Disney our last two trips for our younger DD and I found it a pain to lug onto the bus. I would just see how he does and rent a stroller in the park if he needs one.

Depending on how healthy/heavy he is, why not rent one at the parks as needed? Then you don't have to worry about folding it up and taking it on the bus. And if he doesn't need it until the afternoon, you haven't used up some of your energy pushing him around. Nothing like an energetic kid who's been given a ride all day when you are tired from pushing him all day... If the buses are crowded, you may have to stand - balancing a stroller and a five year old can be tricky.

I have thought about just renting a stroller at the park if he needs it later in the day. I prefer to not lug a stroller on the bus. The strollers at the parks do not look very comfy tho.

Why does he need to be "comfy"? If he's too tired to walk, he'll be just fine in a park rental. Make him comfy and he'll never get out of it ;)

Because I love him and if he is tired of walking and wants a little nap I would like for him to be comfortable.

When my kids were little and conked out for a nap, they could sleep just about anywhere, in any position, if they were tired enough. You'll see tons of kids passed out in park strollers at WDW.

I'll be in Disney with my 5 yr old granddaughter in early June too!! We've taken a couple of trips to Disney, just her and I, and we always have a great time! I'll be renting the Citi Mini for her. It is SOOO easy to push, and really easy to fold up for the bus ride. She is very comfortable in it - I love the huge shade!! I love having the stroller for the walks back to the bus stop, and then back to our room; oh, and if you take a trip to Disney Springs!!! Have a great trip!!!!

The stroller rental companies usually have a chart with what strollers they rent and the height/weight maximum on them as well as the stroller weight. Just go off of that for your grandson and you will be ok.

We rented a city mini GT for our son at age 5&6. It fit my DS easily and he is tall for his age.
It is larger than regular city mini and I would highly recommend it. It was easy to push and fold, and very comfy for an older child at the same time.
