Does anyone know of any (relatively cheap) strollers for bigger kids? I want to get a stroller for my 6 year while we're at the parks. I was just going to rent one, but with the price increase I'm thinking buying one might be better; any suggestions? He's pretty average (height and weight) for a 61/2 year old- about 50 pounds.

i would just get an umbrella stroller. no sense buying one you will never use again. my 8yo dd will sometimes take a rest in my sons umbrella atroller, she fits just fine, maybe a little tall for it, but hey, shes 8. she weighs about 48lbs and is about 53 inches tall.

thanks, i guess i just assumed he'd be too big for an umbrella stroller; i'll have to try that out. It's not too hard to steer with her?- or does she just sit in it for breaks?

my son is also 6.. will be 7 in sept.. and weighs 49 lbs.. we are going in aug. and have been debating the same thing.. forwarning.. people get blasted on this for asking this question saying how kids should be able to walk at that age blah blah blah. and how kids are overweight.. You know your own kid.. you do whats best for you and your family.. i know when its that hot when we go.. we will move quicker and there will be less whining if he gets to rest every now and then.. we are thinking of our old umbrella..

no i dont find it too hard, but she wont stay in it too long, at the most 20 minutes. the only thing i ahve to keep saying to her is to keep her feet off the wheels, that drives me crazy!

oh please, after 6 hours of walking around disney in august heat i would sit in an umbrella stroller if i could:lmao: . i cant believe people would really find issue with that.

Yeah that sounds pretty crazy to me. I mean he obviously doesn't usually use a stroller, but with the heat and how large an area I would like to have something for him to sit in occasionally, thanks for the tips.

You might be surprised how much your kids want to walk. When we went in Feb. I never thought my six year old would make it ... and boy was I wrong. He didn't want to sit in a stroller. Have a great trip!

I have 2 Maclaren Volo strollers for my sonn (almost 3) and daughter (a small age 6). We got them for about $55-60 each on clearance. They aren't fancy, but they get the job done and they are super light weight and easy to carry (shoulder strap) for transport. In addition to the kids sitting in them, the adults that are coming with us are already counting on keeping some of their stuff in our strollers!

we bought two maclaren volos for our trip. they were not cheap-- we bought them new from an ebay store for about $75 each including shipping. the rental price went up right before our trip, so we actually wound up saving quite a bit of money (we needed a double for 9 days).

i tried 3 different cheap umbrella strollers and was not able to push my youngest in it (he was under 2 at the time, but 35lbs). for us the wheels always went sideways and they just seemed uncomfortable to push. we took one to the zoo to test it out before deciding we needed to buy a decent stroller and we spent 3 hours being frustrated, tipping it onto the back wheels, and finally just letting him walk. maybe we just had bad luck, but i can't imagine pushing a 6 year old around disney in one.

Yeah that really is my favorite part about strollers; somewhere to put stuff, and I've never had a problem with anything missing when we've been at Disney (just the occasional CM moving it when we're on a ride:) ) I'll be bringing our regular stroller for our 17 month old, so we'll be set there.

I've really been debating the stroller thing myself. My son will be 5 when we go to Disney (he is 4 now). We never use a stroller anymore, haven't for some time, but I keep thinking that we might need one at Disney. When he was younger (at different theme parks) we never needed to go back to the hotel for naps, he would just nap in the stroller.

My hubby asked him if he thought that he would need a stroller and he said no .... so I asked him "What will you do if you get really tired?" His response "I will just sit on a bench for awhile." Lol

I thought about just renting while we are there (if needed), but don't want to be stuck carrying him all the way back to the resort late at night after the fireworks. Plus the stroller would hold extra clothes, backpack, our purchases, etc....

I am really leaning towards taking one ..... I just hate to spend alot of money on one to use for just a short time. I hate the cheap umbrella strollers - hard to push (he drags his feet in them), no storage room, and it doesn't recline if they go to sleep. So not really sure what to do. :confused3

WOW...sounds just like us. We have 2 ML Volos for DS (2) and DD (small 6). She doesn't use a stroller at all at home, but boy was it WONDERFUL in Disney. When you leave the parks so late and everyone is tired, who wants to carry a 45lb sleeping child back to the resort?

She does walk a good bit, but it's the peace of mind we get that we have it when needed (not if - because she always ends up using it at some point.)

We will be taking both strollers again (and with no hesitation whatsoever) when we return in January.

I would invest in the volo check out ebay for some really good prices you can actually get on for less including shipping (as someone mention they are 75dollars) than what you would buy the black one from target the big difference is that you have a choice of colors. Originally I wasn't going to post this b/c everyone has mentioned them but since you also have a 17mth old I promise you it will not be a wasted investment and they maintain their value they are the Honda of strollers in my opinion.

This has been my experience w/ strollers and I have owned many to the point that I have even had some imported. My dh wants to kill me so I have started clearing them out but we will not mention to him that I bought another quicky that is about to go.

I use a Mac techno on a daily basis for my dd4 she will be 5 next month and she just weighed in at 40 pounds she doesn't walk so I needed the hight weight (the macs have a 55lb limit). My dd7 who will 8 next month weighs about 5-7 pounds more on several trips on everyone of my dd7's 8 trips she has been in a stroller and I promise you next year when we go again she will probably use one some then. I went to target put bothe of them in the volo b/c I really wasn't 100% about the volo b/c of the size fo the wheels well I put each one of them in it and pushed them on the carpet w/ no problem at all and the seat is wide so they were not squished. I have had several versions of the cheap 10-20 dollar umbrella strollers and the ones that don't have shocks on the wheels for older heavier kiddos it feels like the wheels aren't even rolling and this just happened w/ the winnie the pooh umbrella stroller from walmart. Aother umbrella I had that I would recommend if you can find one is the kolcraft it was a silver frame and your choice color seat they were 19.99 at BRU and they were great and I used it w/ no problem. Kolcraft doesn't make them anymore but BRU does have a similar replacement on their website I just haven't used them so I really can't say for sure. Another difference that some people like about the mac is they are taller so people who are about 5'5" or taller don't have to bend down to push like w/ the cheapies.

Sorry this is so long and it is really more food for thought than anything. Have a great trip.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to see if I can find one at Target and try it out like you did. Thanks!

My 5 year old just falls asleep when she's had enough. In her mac and cheese, watching TV, whatever.

So I invested in a Maclaren Volo based on the recommendations I got here.
It was $74.99 including shipping: http://www.babye-store.com/ (It's still in the box; we don't leave for another 27 days and things have been busy here.) Big picture: with all the money we're spending on this trip, that's probably well spent money if Kira is comfortable and we don't have to carry a sleeping 5 year old back to the resort.

I figure that each night after we do our pool/nap thing and head out for dinner, I'll bring it along.

My niece has a 2 year old who is disabled. I figure that when I'm done with the stroller after Disney I'll pass it on to Kelly. As the baby gets heavier, a lightweight stroller will probably come in handy for her.

I'm so glad to hear it worked out for you! I was second guessing my decision to get one for my dd, but I know I don't want to be carrying both kids around, so I found them on clearance and went for it! My ds has been using his the last few months, but dd's is still in the box.

For those of you that have the Maclaren Volo - does the seat recline? I read the description (from the one on ebay), but didn't see that mentioned. If it doesn't, is it still comfortable when they go to sleep?

We are going to make a trip to Babies R Us in the next few days and try the strollers out. If the Maclaren pushes that easy then that may be the stroller for us. Seems cheaper than renting one for 8 days.

Thanks for the info. Hearing others experiences does help out. :)

the volo doesn't recline it is a standard umbrella stroller it the seat is wider than a regular umbrella stroller so it has to be better than being squished.
