12. A Dolphin Encounter

Couldn’t wait till tonight so have come back for a pint and a chat. It’s a bit hot. I’m sittin on our balcony in the shade and it’s still hot.
A band’s just come on next door at Shephards (well, one man with a keyboard and drum machine) and he’s doin a medley of Sanata and Jamaican oildrum music. The sea’s a lovely bluey green and I’m beginning to wonder of this is the shape of holidays to come.

We walked the mile to Pier 60 this morning and toured the sightseeing boats to pick our dolphin trip. The Dolphin Encounter won the vote coz it’s got an upper viewin deck which we figured would be better to see all there is to see. It had a lower covered deck with a bar and loos so that swung it. We booked for the 11 o clock sailin, as it’s 1 hour 15 sailin time and a dolphin sightin guaranteed or get another trip free. So I figured if we didn’t see one we’d have time to go again this afty.

The harbour settin is very picturesque, as is the view as we left the inlet and set out into the Mexican Gulf. One of the crew said we were lucky as all the trips had been cancelled yesterday due to bad weather. It was a bit windy when we got in last night but we figured, bein on the coast, it must always be like that.

We no sooner cleared the rocky outcrop and the Captain spotted a dolphin to our right. Then another to the left. I was expectin to go right out to sea to see them but here they were just a couple of hundred yards from shore. Every now and then, we’d spot a dolphin’s fin breakin the surface. It was exciting. but I was disappointed. I’d expected them to be jumpin out of the water and that and it was a real chore peerin out to sea tryin to see what there was to see, if yer see what I mean.
Then we stumbled on a couple of females with their young. The littluns were mirroring Mum’s line and they rose and dived together in perfect harmony. (daft beggar, I’m fillin up again – they were so beautiful). All told, we must have seen a dozen in 4 or 5 different areas. The Captain kept sailin over them, which concerned our Julie, but apparently they like the turbulence the wash makes and me and me little Princess ran to the back of the boat on one pass and we got a lovely sight of ‘our’ dolphin swimming up and down in the white water and keeping up with us, not jumpin out of the water but keeping pace by divin up and forward – as they do. It made me little girl’s day and justified the cost of the whole holiday again- you just don’t get them moments in Scarborough.

We’d been pleasantly surprised at the low cost of the trip- just short of $50 for us all – and it was really great morning out. Yes, I’d expected to see them jumpin out of the water and that but hadn’t figured on seein so many of them and the fact they were just bobbin about in a natural habitat was just right really. We’ll definitely do that again.

We walked back along the beachfront, browsin on the shops and found a postcard propped up against a phone booth. It was from a young Canadian boy to his classmates back home. He was havin a lovely time too. We imagined him bein all upset- as only little boys can be- when he realised he’d lost his card, so posted it for him. Gaz, bein Gaz, went into one and worried it had been a trap and I was now likely to have contracted anthrax. That boy’s got some major imagery defects!

We called at the service station just over the road from our gaff to get crisps or summat. It was like a major supermarket. We ordered subs from the deli counter and the kids got cola, while I restocked the fridge with beer.

I can’t tell you how hot it is here. I’m just enjoyin sittin, chillin and drinkin me IceHouse. Not me at all- drinkin beer, I mean.

V’s just caught sight of a dolphin just yards off shore and she’s a bit excited. I didn’t see it, so it’s validity is obviously in question. But she’s happy, so I’m just humourin her for the time bein.

Plan for this afty is to walk the beach to pier 60 to watch the sunset then crazy golf at Captain Bligh’s over the road. Dinner’s likely to be at Big Ben’s coz Heidi was so nice to us last night and she’s got beer too!

See yers later.

What an idyllic day! :)

A bit of a bargain with it only be $50 for the boat trip and they even sell beer in Clearwater - sounds just perfect!

Dave,

You can tell that Clearwater's got you chilled, mate!!

You're hereby nominated as Spennymoor's very own Ernest Hemingway.

....and I believe V. saw the dolphin!!
