String eater - a PSA

Maybe we'll have to start a "kitty support group"...I can hear it now..."my name is Fluffy, and I'm addicted to eating string"...

My name is Figaro and I'm addicted to cotton in any form, my favorites are...mommies bathrobe tie(her new one from Coronado Springs is the best), the corner of the bed sheets and Q-tips I find carelessly tossed in the trash(silly humans).:)

Hi Figaro! My name is Rosalind, and I'm addicted to curly ribbon, packing tape, rubber bands, plants of all kinds, and assorted string-like items (especially used dental floss). I also like chewing on the seams of pants, but only when the pants are being worn by a person.

And my name is Beatrice, and I'm addicted to eating broom straws, plants of all kinds (especially the flowers my daddy brings for my mommy), cords, and the shower curtain. I also enjoy standing on my mommy and daddy's heads while they are sleeping, but that's a different support group. ;)

Poor Patches, I hope he has a full recovery  :cat:

This reminds me of the morning we woke up to the sound of our Siamese cat Mushu making scary sounds.... DH grabbed him and yelled at me to "pull it out of his mouth!" Having no idea what he was talking about, I rolled over in bed to see DH holding him down, and a short piece of lime-green SOMETHING hanging from Mushu's mouth. I pulled on it, thinking it was a twist-tie or something short like that, only to see about 8-10" of lime green ribbon come out! We were very fortunate that the ribbon had not yet entangled itself in his stomach and intestines.

Poor kitty. Dh worked with someone whose dog ate a cassette tape and the same thing happened. Sliced his entire GI track in two as it got pulled through. :scared1:

My cat likes to eat string too......but with needles on the end. He did this two days before a Disney trip once. Left a cross stitch needle with string attached for 5 minutes. Thought since 3 other ppl were in the room, they'd notice something, but cat took off with string in mouth and ate the whole thing before we could get him out from behind the TV. Luckily he never acted sick. Took him to the vet and x-rays confirmed he ate the needle. One vet wanted to do emergency surgery NOW. The other said "it's already through the hard part and made all the hard turns. It's about 2 inches from the exit and it's a straight shot....I'd say just check his poop unless there is a problem." That night (approximately 24 hours after eating it) he pooped it out. Ds (9) asked me if I was going to use the needle again. Ugh....NO!!!!

Here's the picture the vet's office gave me:

:scared1: :scared1: :scared1: Wow, that was one fortunate kitty!!!

I hope your kitty is doing better. My cat likes to eat my crocs. I woke up one morning and he had eaten the strap off of my crocs. Now, I have to be sure that all the crocs are put up and out of reach of Mr. Boots.

Our westie gacked up my DD13's hair scrunchie last week. Not pretty...

My DBF has a basset hound. The dog loves 2 things- eating and attention.

Well in the past this dumb dog has eaten a sock (large adult male sock :scared1: ) and pooped it out (DBF says it wasn't pretty but it was funny), as well as assorted other items. One required surgery (dont remember what he ate). Three days ago he ate a bag of peanuts. Yep, bag and all. :rotfl: DBF was quite angry to say the least.

The dog also has stollen gum and gotten it out of the packaging before... we find the empty wrapper eventually.

Everything has to be "Chance proofed", it's worse than having a toddler around. :rotfl:

Hi everyone! My name is Rowan and I'm a--ahem--big-boned blue tabby who especially likes to eat plastic grocery bags. Luckily, I haven't had any problems because of it, and I really think it's festive to eat the pink ones the store gives out in the spring; it's a treat for me to eat, and then the pretty pink bag bits "spruce up" the litter box till mom cleans it out! Who doesn't love that?! :thumbsup2

If we want to get really gross, my family used to have 2 Labs, one of whom liked to eat dead things and the other of whom liked to roll in them. Mother-daughter tag team. Several winters ago, a hunter who bow-hunted for deer was on my parents' property (with their permission; the only caveat was that he either had to take the deer off-property to clean it or bury what was left if he went ahead and cleaned it there). He did neither, so Sable (the eater) and Katie (the roller) found the mess in fairly short order. It was mostly frozen, so Katie didn't see much appeal in rolling on it, but Sable just figured that it was like a frozen cheesecake that wasn't quite thawed all the way out yet, but is still good to eat. She was mistaken. According to my dad, once she started to get sick from all of the frozen entrails, it looked like a scene from Alien. All over the living room rug. :scared1:

Hi everyone! My name is Rockey and I also love to eat things I shouldn't. I love Q-tips, erasers, string, yarn, shoe laces, twistie ties, plants, the tales off all my toys, shoe boxes, and paper. I also like licking and eating everyone's hair when they are sleeping. My most favorite thing to eat is dried pasta. I'm not allowed to have any treats though. I have a problem digesting food and I'm only allowed to eat perscription cat food.:)

To the OP, interesting thread! :rotfl2: (sorry for the pun).

Anywhoo, these little tips are always helpful for our fur babies.

That is exactly how my sweet Bella died.
She got string somehow, it perforated her intestines and there was nothing the vet could do.:sad1:

I'm so sorry. :sad1: I'm really amazed most of the time that Patches is still with us. I really thought that she wasn't going to make it. She was so malnourished that it's only just now that her fur is growing back from the surgery site.

I just found this thread and I'm happy to see that Patches is doing well. I smile every time I see your signature photo - those kitties are all so cute!

I'd also like to add that pantyhose can be very dangerous for animals to eat. You know how if you have a little dry skin, the hose will kind of stick to your fingers and get scratchy? Imagine what it does to tender pet intestines.

My cat made tinsle. remember when they used it in gift bags. We caught it pretty early but it was a mess.

Kae

One of my parents' cats did the same thing (cat's name is Meow Mix). DH actually found a Christmas card that said Merry Christmas from Tinsel Butt the Christmas Cat.

Now when they use tinsel, it's no longer down where she can reach it. Also, now that Mix is older, she's not as springy as she used to be. She just lies down and pretty much doesn't move much.

I guess, cats eating tinsel isn't out of the norm :confused3

Funny that you say that, since your "mmm, beverly" picture always makes me chuckle!

Not at all, unfortunately. We don't even buy the stuff around here, or Easter grass for that matter. Heck, I found Patches chewing on the webby stuff that lines the underside of my mattress the other day. I don't even know where to begin with that one. :confused3
