Hey Disers!

Have any of y'all heard about a strange virus going around? My neighbor's little girl came down with something recently that I was certain was a mild case of chicken pox.

But the spots didn't look anything like chicken pox - I know because DS had a slight case of them when he was 5.

These look more like welts or bug bites. They occur on the trunk and then move to the extremities.

My neighbor said she took her daughter to the doctor, and the doctor said she had seen 5 other cases like that this week.

All had welts, a fever, and acted tired. My neighbor's daughter threw up for a couple hours, but the dr. didn't mention any other child throwing up.

Well, I just looked at DS after his bath.....and he has the same welts starting.

Beyond bizarre.......has anyone else been dealing with this strange virus? :confused3

Is it hand foot and mouth? That is a form of the chicken pox. Then again it could be Fifth Disease.

We've had strep in our house with those symptoms-no sore throat though. Sometimes the only symptom of strep has been bad leg pain.

:confused3 could be, but wouldn't the doctor be familiar with those? My neighbors doc actually said she didn't know what it was - just some virus.

I'll ask her about the other stuff though.

Yup, puffy. Almost like a mosquito bite....almost.

YES my DD10 has had these very symptoms! She has what look like bug bites on her stomach and side and her legs have been really sore for the past 2 weeks. We figured it was growing pains and she had gotten bitten by bugs playing outside.

DD14 on the other hand had a really sore throat for a few days that we chalked up to sinus drainage.

Wonder if both kids had some type of Strep instead...:confused3

DS had this a few months ago. His Dr said it was Roseola, but she was really shocked that he had it at his age, he's 9!

She said it usually only affects younger children, so it was very odd, but she seemed sure that's what it was.

He didn't really have any problems with it, and it as gone in just a few short days.

I thought it was mosquito bites too. He was getting out of the bath tub and I noticed his WHOLE stomach was just covered in big puffy pink/red spots, and then he got them all over his arms and legs.

**forgot to mention..all that happened after he had had a fever for a few days.**

Maybe roseola?

It's usually in younger kids but who knows.

Maybe, could be. The only thing that doesn't jive is that with my neighbor's daughter and my son.....the rash seems to preceed the fever instead of proceed it?

I'm thinking strep may be it - I'll ask the dr..

Yours definately sounds like Roseola - I wonder if it's presenting a little differently because the kids are older. But again, it sounds like the fever came before the rash in your son's case - in these, the fever came after the rash. But maybe timeframe has nothing to do with it.

I'm going to ask the dr. about this too.

The rashes in my neighbors case and DS's case are not widespread. They're intermittant and not red. The look like mosquito bites here and there. It's really weird. Thanks for all your responses. The neighbors dr. didn't seem to recognize this virus - so maybe it's new or a mutated form of a virus like Roseola?

Very interesting, but scary.

Hand foot and mouth is an older less frequent disease and I do not know if younger doctors are seeing it. It occurs on the bottoms of the feet, the hands, on the knees and sometimes on the trunk. Usually it comes from kids who go to day care or in nursery school. Then they bring it home to the older kids. It is no fun. Check the mouth. If they have sores in there then that is most likely what it is.

:thumbsup2 I'll check his mouth tomorrow. Thank you.

My DD7 had something very similar to this about a month ago. I actually took pictures of the bumps bc I wanted to make sure I could tell if they changed or anything. She had them on her belly, her arms and her legs. None on her back or her neck or her face. She had the bumps first and the following day she got a high fever. The bumps were very very itchy. I took her to the doctor's and they said that it wasn' poison ivy and it wasn't the chicken pox. She also said that she didn't think it was bug bites bc there were just too many of them. She told us to take benedryl for the rash and see if that helped with the itch and to take motrin for the fever. I put hydrocortisone cream on her rash and her fever cleared up in about 3 days but the rash lingered for upwards of 2 weeks. It was very weird.
