The new A.C. Wathey Pier and Port Facility is very nice with one unfortunate exception. There is a business in the largest of the new buildings called "Duty Free World" that I would caution you to avoid.

After returning our rental car we made one last Tee-shirt run in this store. Big mistake. My DS was to turn 7 on the ship the next day and earlier we had indulged him with a few small gifts. Among these was a wooden segmented snake that he was quite fond of. The store owner and what I assume were several of his family members took an interest in the snake and my son let them examine it. Being a new store they were curious what items were popular sellers in other stores.

While the DW selected Tee's with my DD the DS found an inexpensive shark tooth necklace that he wanted. At some point he handed it to my DW and said the plastic cord had come out of the clasp. She gave it to me and I took it to the owner and said it had come apart. The necklace was $7.95 and your typical cheaply made, China trinket. While I was surprised when he said I had to buy it, I didn't argue and took out my Visa card. My DW realized what was happening she returned the several Tee shirts she had chosen, to the shelf.

The store owner refused the credit card and demanded cash because the purchase was under $20. I politely opened my wallet and explained that I used the last of my cash to tip the crew on the 12 Meter Challenge excursion. He reiterated cash only and I said again we simply did not have any. In retrospect, judging by his gestures, I think he was expecting me to buy the several Tee shirts as well. After several, "Cash", "Sorry I have none" round robins I even offered to add the credit card surcharge to the total and said "Unless you want to accept the credit card we have a show to catch on the boat that I don't intend to miss." and we left the store.

The owner followed us out of the store and walked up to my 6 year old son, grabbed his arm, ripped his toy snake from his hand and said "I will keep this as collateral until you pay me".

Well needless to say I wasn't exactly pleased to have my son manhandled. He was crying and my wife and I were in shock. While my son may have broken the necklace by accident it certainly was not intentional and more likely due to the quality of the item than anything my son did. He also gave the broken necklace to us and did not just put it on a shelf somewhere as many might do. Nor did I hide the event from the owner or refuse to pay for it when requested.

Well my response was to take a photo of the owner and his shop with a promise I'd share this experience with others that were headed his way.

On the 100 yard walk back to the ship I came upon two Port police officers and explained the situation to them. While the DW waited in the boarding queue. ( interesting note: All returning passengers go through security screening on the ship, metal detectors and x-rays similar to airport screening and the lines can get quite long) I went back to the shop with the officer who interviewed the owner and got essentially the same story. The officer came to me and said the owner will now accept your credit card. I explained to the officer that he had a fair chance to accept and I would not now trust such a man with my credit information. He smiled knowingly but said there was little more he could do.

I was disappointed but not surprised that he did not require the return of the birthday present snake. After restating that I would explain the event to Disney and post notice of my St. Maarten experience on the Internet I went back to the ship. I was at the top of the gangway and next in line for the x-ray when the son of the owner and the officer came running toward the ship.

The officer said he contacted the harbor's senior officer, who ordered the shop owner to return my son's property and charged the owner with assault and theft. He also relayed a request that I not post negative comments about St. Maarten on the net.

In fairness, St. Maarten was a positive excursion and they ultimately handled the situation well.

The rest you can judge for yourself. Personally I'd love to hear that someone on a later cruise went up to this shop and asked "hey are you the guys that stole a 6 year old's birthday present over a broken necklace? Well I read about you on the internet and I'm shopping elsewhere"

That would make my day.

We will be in St Maarten in Dec. I will print this, put it in my notebook and try to remember to ask about it while there. This was absurd! :sad2:

I've never had anything liek that happen to me on any island but my neighbor and her new husband went on a cruise (not Disney) and while they were in Nassau her husband (who is African-American) went into the store while she (who is white) waited outside. While she was standing outside a native to the island came up to her, grabbed her arm, spit on her and said: "why do you white women take all the good men?" Needless to say she left the island and sat on the boat the rest of the day. But you're right... the islands are really pretty - nothing like that should discourage people. Go and experience it :goodvibes

I have another bad St Maarten story....I tried to get an appt to have my daughters and my hair braided on the boat....everything was booked. We got off the boat and took another boat to the "main part of the island"....There were several women there offering hair braiding....I told them sure....we bartered them down from $90 a head (ridiculous) to $20 a head......WELLL, to make a long story short a week and a half later I got head lice......and so did my daughters.....I never thought once that this would happen....I will NEVER do that again, very embarrassing...

Kissimmee Family, I totally gasped when I read your story...so much so (along with the other posts) that my DH asked me what was wrong?? I thought things like that only happened to me, but I am totally flabbergasted....Good for you for telling them that you would "spread the word" on the internet! Looks like that was what it took, it's a shame it had to come to that, but glad at least SOMETHING snapped them out of it. Even though we will not be going for another 7 months, I will either say the quote about them taking the snake (that was absolutely hideous), or avoid that place completely!!!! I am so sorry that happened to your DS and thanks for the heads up. By the way, I am so sure that the necklace was a piece of cr** and your son didn't do anything to break it besides touch it.
Thanks heathercat for your headsup too. I will know now to NOT make that mistake either.... :earseek:

You handled it better than me. I probably would have taken a couple of the man's front teeth had he laid his hands on my son, regardless of the situation.

He would have likely filed charges on me, but he would be doing so with a couple of teeth missing. :cool1: You can put your hands on me all you want, but don't manhandle my wife or my son.

I'll definitely pass this story on to any and all people I come in contact with that are making the cruise.

Wow so sorry to hear about that incident, that is ridiculous!! I hope the rest of your trip was special!

That is absurd....and down right wrong!!!! We have been to St. Maarten several times and are were offered drugs several times while walking down the street (even the kids), but thank goodness we never encountered a situation like that. That owner should be ashamed of himself. I don't see any other way you could have handled it....without you getting arrested...you did the right things....hit him in his wallet....I am sure he will be sanctioned somehow once officials get wind of your displeasure and see that it is indeed posted on the net.

We had a bad shop incident in Key West where I was quoted a price by a sales clerk and then when I went up to pay I saw the clerk and the cashier whispering and all of a sudden the item was twice the price.....a discussion ensured and it would have been one thing if the clerk had said she mis quoted me a price...but she denied she ever told me the lower price and the cashier accused me of lying. I left the item on the counter and walked out. Wish I would have thought about saying to them I would let other know...but I just wanted out of there.

You should also post this incident on the Cruise Critic boards! That must have been unbelievble and awful for your family. :sad2:

I'm so glad everything worked out in the end!

We were on the same cruise and rented a car in St. Maarten. It was a beautiful day and we did pretty good driving until we took a wrong turn as we were going to our horseback riding tour. I ended up "overshopping" and then that put us in a rush and then we were 10 mins. late. As we pulled up we saw the horses leaving. The lady was not too nice about it- she was actually gruff - about our being late. I knew there was probably nothing they could do but she could have been pleasant. My DD14 was sooooo disappointed and I felt horrible. I asked the lady if we could visit the horses and she said sure -do you want to buy some treats? I kinda laughed to myself and thought -I don't think so! We walked out and started looking at the horses and she followed and gave my daughter some treats for the horses.
My DD rides and we own a horse but she wanted to ride on the beach. At our barn the trainer would have saddled up the 3 horses and ridden us out to meet the group - they lost out on $180. It was a very odd experience and I always say everthing happens for a reason.

We ended up going to the Butterfly farm and had a good time. Then we bought our DD a nice pair of earrings and she was thrilled. Jewelry will make you forget all the bad things that happen - :flower: :flower:

Hope ya'll had a good trip other than that incident. We did and I am missing the buffet's this morning!!

I posted this before a while ago so if it sounds familiar, it probably is...
It's a long story but worth the read...
One thing to keep in mind...
If you have any coupons, you MUST give them to the salesperson when making the purchase (for a free gift, not a discount) -- We were on the Eastern 2/5/05 cruise and visited the Del Sol in St. Martin. My daughter bought 2 t-shirts (children $18, adults start at $22) and had a coupon for a free color changing canvas bag with the purchase of 2 shirts. While at the store, we couldn't seem to find the coupon and left. We went to a restaurant and found the lost coupon in our bag and took it back to the Del Sol about an hour after the original purchase. My DD10 (almost 11) said she wanted to be the one to get the bag so I was browsing the store nearby while she waited in line. When she got to the front of the line, she told the salesperson what she wanted and produced her receipt. The lady made a rude comment about how I sent my kid to do my errands instead of coming myself. The lady called the owner out who I talked to and when he refused to honor the coupon, I told him I wanted to return the items we bought (2 shirts and some hairclips - total $51 US). (My intention was to return the items and do the entire transaction over with the coupon as we still liked the shirts.) The owner told me he didn't accept returns and flat out refused my poor kid her bag. I was furious and went outside the store. We had also bought color changing shirts at a different store for $9.95/shirt so whenever someone was coming into the store that I recognized from the Disney Magic, I would tell them that there was another store with nicer people and a better price just down the street selling the same type products. The owner came outside and said if I didn't leave, he would call the police. He claimed I was "peddling my wares". I simply told him I was just talking to people I knew about my experience there and showing them a shirt I bought from a different store. He went inside and called the police, noting his intention to have me arrested. Of course, I have a complaint into the corporate office now, but I also am the type of person that if I have a terrible customer service experience that I share it with everyone I know - the Disboards included! So be warned... Not to say I don't love the products though -- we still went to the Del Sol in St. Thomas the next day and bought 2 more shirts...
In addendum, I did follow up on my promise to call Del Sol's corporate office - I called, emailed, and wrote a letter. They were (thankfully) shocked by the owner's actions and aplogized on his behalf. They did send my daughter the bag in question, so all is right with the world (well, at least for this incident). But, a word to the wise, as much as I hate to admit it, the man was right -- you aren't in the states anymore.......

Hope this helps someone!

That is an awful experience. You seem to have reacted in the only way possible. I have an awful vision of your DS with his present being pried from his arms by strangers...How awful.. I am glad he got it back...

On another post, you said that Disney was going to do something special for his Birthday (the following day?)...I hope they did...Some Disney Magic was definitely needed here....

While I told the Disney customer service person that I was not seeking any form of compensation, after all it was not something they had any control over, she said she would try to do something for him.

The next night the oval table in our room was sprinkled with silver Mickeys, an 8x10 Photo of all the Characters with the Magic as a background, a large Woody doll and a birthday certificate and button.

A nice gesture we thought. Then again maybe they do the same for all birthday boys?

Kissimmee....I can just imagine your rage and frustration...especially at what happened with your DS. I'd have probably been in the St. Maarten jail...or standing outside the store screaming at the top of my lungs.

I just can't imagine someone taking something away from a child. I had a mother call me yesterday and accuse my DD of calling her son several times a night, even once at midnight. Well, supposedly the midnight call was last weekend and we just happened to be in Orlando that weekend...so after some harsh words....we hung up. I checked the cell phone that she would have used, not from ORL, but from home, and there was one call to this boy. So I called her back and confronted her and she still insisted that DD had called him...it's like she didn't believe that I was giving her the facts. Come to find out, it's another girl who is calling him and using DD's name. So, if you keep persuing, when you know you are right, as you were with the St. Maarten situation, it comes out right.

Glad everything worked out ok and hopefully this store will be boycotted by DCL cruisers as well as CM's.....

Phyllis

So sorry that you had the awful experience and thank you for sharing it with us. They can be guarenteed that I will never "darken their doorstep"!

We will be going on the Eastern Caribbean with RCCL Mariner of the Seas in June. I will have copies of this thread with me to share with my Cruise Critic freinds. In fact, I'll try to drop a copy off at this business. I'll let you know what happens.

We were on the same cruise also..,.

I thought this was the store...You confirmed with this picture!! I went in the store and they were very rude... They followed us around everywhere we went in the store... I would not buy anything from this store...

I think you should write a letter and a copy of that picture to the ST.Maarten chamber of commerce or tourism board and cc a copy to disney!

Glad Disney tried to make the situation up a bit...

Doesn't it stink to be home today!!

That certainly is Special!!!!! No, I have never heard of this..Glad to hear he had a nice surprise... :Pinkbounc

I think you handled the entire unfortunate incident with class and common sense....too often, altercations like this up very ugly....St Maarten, afterall, is a foreign country.....

Don't think this incident will fade. I have copied and pasted this in my Word program of cruise tips and when I go in 2007 I will spread the word too. This is horrible. If they don't want our money, fine. We won't shop there and they can close down. I would have been furious!
