Strange Children's names...

I am a minority, but I think unique names are a diservice to the child. It is not fair to saddle an innocent child with a goofy name or an unusual spelling. If you want to practice your name creativity do it on your goldfish and not your child.

Well, that makes two of us. ::yes:: I know a couple who named their boys Rudolph, Dietrich, and Hans, all fine, upstanding, sturdy German names. The thing is these people don't speak German, have never been to Germany, and have no living relatives in Germany. :rotfl2: Kinda silly, IMO

Um, that makes 3 of us. I feel so bad for teachers these days - I mean, it's guess your best on the first day of school.

My kids are Mark (not Marq, not Mairke), Nancy (not n'AAnciyy, not Noncee), and Jack (just plain old Jack). I didn't name them Shasta or Fresca, Ruby LaDonda, Windsock or Plum. I chose not to perpetuate such family names as Exa, Elmer, Ferris, Bernie, Pootie or Hirst. I gave them my maiden name as their middle name, which they can jettison at will when they grow up.

That being said, my DH, an OSU graduate, DID go to school with Scarlatta Gray.... and I went to grammar school with Jesus, which I thought was terribly scandalous at age 8 (he was from South American, and it was pronounced Hay-soos, but still....). AND my dd, when she was confirmed, and was able to choose her confirmation name, chose PELAGIA, so go figure.

Jesus is a very common name with so many from the southern reaches of teh Americas, so I don't consider it a strange name at all. I also know quite a few Ians, so that one seems rather common as well.

My son had a classmate named Sunny Summers and his ex wife's maiden name was Autumn Day. Her mother thought it was clever, but I thought it was wierd.

My dds name is Devon (Pronounced Dev in) and she gets called DEVONNE and I can't stand that! When I named her 11 yrs ago the name was different now it is so common around here! And it is used for boys and girls!!! As soon as I saw the name Devon I loved it not many people in my family liked it! They said it sounded snobbish!

My lovely belated nephew was named Tyller (2 l's?? crazy)

I have a cousin Kristofer ( He hates his name says his mom should have spelled it right christopher! and out of 5 children he is the 3rd child and the only one w/o a J name!)

My youngest dd's name is Teagan Rae. That's her first and middle name. I had a women at the store the other day tell me that her name is bizarre. I have been told it was unique or interesting but that was a first. It is an ancient Irish name, and my dh's family is Irish so we wanted and Irish name.
I have liked Teagan since I was a teenager and unless we change our minds that is what we are going to name a girl if we have another one (which I know I have told you before). I don't think it is weird at all but I will admit I have never heard of any other Teagan other than your dd. I saw it in a baby book years ago when I was doing a school project. That's how I heard of it and ended up falling in love with it. Dh also likes it. It is rare that the 2 of us agree on names so it will probably be a winner! I seem to like Irish names too and neither one of us is even Irish. :confused3

I have a customer who's kids are named D'von and Devon... that must get confusing. I really like Teagan, my DH and I had a boy's named picked out , but since we have decided to adopt from China we need a girls name. I can't wait to ask him in the morning and see what he thinks. Our boys name was going to be Declan.

MTE!

Thank god they changed their mind and went with a good, solid CLASSIC name: Elijah :)

Much better than Soy-er. :rotfl2:

TOV

where I live, Sawyer is a more common name than Elijah...I like the name Sawyer. I like different names....but to each his own!

My kids are named Reid (DS) and Regan (DD.) People think those names are strange...but I think they are beautiful!

The only "Teagan" I know is a boy. And yes, I thought it was an "unusual" name when I first heard it.

i have a couple! my children are...taylor ashtyn (common now but 13 years ago not so much) legacy haydyn (her dad said said she would be his legacy), timberlyn nycole (last name starts w/T :banana so TNT, she's a red-head) chance malachi (our last 'chance' for a boy!) unfortunately,my husband died shortly after chance was born, now i am happily re-married with a new son Kaine to carry on the 'k' sound most boys in my family have... grandfather Cashie, brothers Chase and Cash, nephews Kotin Wood and Breyer Wood also a friend asked me to help name her third son his name is now Addison (add-a son)

My daughter's name is Rhiannon, which might not be universally unusual, but where I live it is.

I know a girl named Rhiannon. She's probably a teenager by now. I always like it.

Wel Everyone says that my children have odd names but I think that they are cute and different.
DS 6- Keitaaron DeWayne
DD 4- Xeyana Sherre
DD 3- Chloe Annaleice
DS 1- Colin William (Normal I think but everyone goes on and on about how they have never heard the name Colin before)
My exhusband named the older 2 children so I didn't have ANY input but I think that they fit my unique children. I drew the line when he wanted to name our youngest DD Vasaila..all that I could think was that it reminded me of sexual thins like Viagra, Vagisil, a certain woman part.... :confused3 So I named her and my youngestDS.

Brhiannon - comb. of Rhiannon and Brianna
Devinleigh

I also like Vivienne and Igraine, but passed because I knew they would never be pronounced correctly

Others I like or have run across: Merlynn (more common in the South, I think) - and Trilby , Shelby, and Tesla (a character from from books I've read, not the heavy metal band)

Thanjs OP - I am having fun reading through this thread!!!

We were thinking Sebastian Michael for a boy and my kids went nuts telling us we can't do that to a kid. Well he'd be named after is Grandfather and it's his dad's name backwards.

So we're going Christopher Michael for a boy and Katie Elizabeth for a girl. Unless we come up with something better. Less than 7 months to change our minds.

I don't think Teagan is odd at all. I wouldn't be surprised if it is on the Social Security list of the top 1000 names. Ian is definately on there.
Katie-Scarlett. That is funny, because she is hardly referred to as Katie-Scarlett in the movie. Perhaps a bit more in the book?

I thought her father always called her Katie Scarlett.

Nothing can beat Nicolas Cage naming his son Kal-el. There's a kid who's going to get picked on.

My sister's name was Colleen. Not a terribly unusual name, but kind of funny since her birthday was on St. Patrick's Day. :shamrock:

I don't have any kids of my own, and the strangest names I've seen weren't strange by themselves, but strange when combined with other names in the family. I met a family once that had 2 daughters, Madison, and Reagan (sp?), and a son that was named Tyler. I wonder if it was just a coincidence that all their children were named for former presidents.
