HI-

We really NEED to replace our old, slide-in range. However, the new ones cost a FORTUNE! Cheap models start around $700 on sale. Is it possible to replace our slide-in with a freestanding model? Our stove is kitty-corner in the corner between the counter and the peninsula, like in the corner of an "L". I know the freestanding will have the controls on the back that rise above the counter level, but DH is planning on building a box to enclose the back of the control panel, which we will use as a shelf for salt and pepper, the timer, a spoon rest, etc. I just don't know if a freestanding range will actually slide in that spot (provided the measurements are the same); for example, I have no idea how the electrical cord will hook up, etc. Anyone know if we can do this or not? We really cannot afford a slide-in range!

We did it a few years ago. We had a panel in the bottom that just unscrewed to get it into the space. It does stick out a little more because DH didn't cut the portion off the back. I am planning on getting new counters when we get the extra money so that will take care of that problem.

Slide-ins have 2 differences.

1) no part that sticks up (on the top) as in over the counter.
and
2) Slide-ins have no back.

Having a back is no difference. You don't need one, as you would have counters on both sides now, but having it doesn't matter.

If you have an open kitchen into a family room though the top sticking up may look silly. If it is against an outside wall, or something it will not matter.

We did this last year, our slide in stove was 39 years old (really not kidding here) and finally caught fire. My dad came over and unscrewed the bottom plate and the cut out the counter tops that ran behind the stove and we put in the new free standing one. However my dh did have to go under the house and move the electric box that the stove plugged into because it was too far from the wall for the drawer to slid in completely. Otherwise it was fine!
