Have your local grocery/retail stores started charging for bags? At the first of the year, our local grocery stores are charging .10 cents per bag. They did give a "deal" on their re-usable bags (charged .10 for a .99 bag). I guess we better pull all those free bags out of the closet! The worst is trying to remember to put them back in car so you have them.

Not to my knowledge.

I'm guessing this store doesn't have a self checkout? Because I don't see how they could enforce that at a self checkout.

At self checkout, if you don't have your own bag, the only option is to purchase bags (the staff person counts them out for you and charges)

Here in NJ they do (and if you want a bag at self check out it will cost you). I do online grocery shopping, our store charges a max of $1.50 regardless of how many bags is needed. They really pile up, I donate them to our local food pantry and miss having plastic bags for dog poop.

If you're in CO, it was voted into law that charging for the bags would start in 2023.

Beginning in January 2024, stores in CO will no longer provide bags even at a cost so you must bring your own.

Yes. It's a county law where I live to charge for plastic bags. I bring reuseable bags whenever I go shopping so it doesn't bother me.

Yep. Live in CO.

Was supposed to start in MD, but as of now, I don't think it has. It hadn't as of last Wednesday.

Aldi has charged for bags ever since I started going there. It's 2 bucks for the eco friendly. I have some from when they were 99 cents years ago that are still going strong. I think it's now 10-15 cents for paper, and the insulated plastic (very good for meats) is a couple of bucks also. But they last quite awhile too. They don't charge you to use an empty box though and a lot of people just grab one and fill it up.

I don't use bags. I mostly do you scan and everything goes back in cart unbagged. I carry 2 plastic totes and 2 coolers in my van. Everything gets sorted and put in proper container. Then when I get home only take at most 4 trips to get groceries in and no bags to deal with.

I do something similar myself. Works great.

We (Western Mass) have had several towns put in plastic bag bans and stores began charging for paper. I want to say the first around me was Amherst who started in 2017 and many more have followed. I always keep a stack of insulated hot/cold reusable bags in each car, they are great for when i need to get something at the store and go elsewhere before heading home.

In CA since 2014.
And not by the store's choice. It's the law. Although it was suspended for a time during the pandemic because someone finally realized that during covid putting used reusable bags on a conveyor belt used by dozens of people probably wasn't very sanitary.
Our store had a Deputy Sheriff on duty and seems like the majority of his time was preventing people from bringing reusable bags into the store.
