I'm not sure where to post this question, but we're driving to Disney but gonna stop and stay one night on the way down. I'm thinking either Tallahassee or Lake City by looking at the atlas. Has anyone ever stayed at either city on their way to Orlando and can you give me any information on the best hotels to stay in?

Cindy

I lived in Tallahassee for 9 years, I say stay at the Radisson or Doubletree.

We don't stay overnight in Lake City but we do stop there for gas and for the Pizza Hut before we go the rest of the way to Orlando.

The Pizza Hut has been excellent each time we've been there.

Thanks for the advise. I'm gonna check rates for both cities. That will probably help me make a decision.

We have been stopping at Lake City for the past two years and really like it! We are usually at the Comfort Inn (right off the highway) or the Holiday Inn right next to it. Never have stopped at Tallahassee, though, so can't help you there. :wave2:

We've stopped several times in Lake City and stayed at the Best Western each time. Good AAA rates when I've made reservations over the net. It's only a 2 1/2 hour drive in the morning to Disney, which is why we make the longer drive on our first travel day.

Hi I'm from LA too. We've left directly after work on a Friday night and would usually make Tallahassee between 5 to 6 hours into the drive. We have stayed at Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn and Best Western directly off of the I-10. I have just walked in around midnight usually and gotten rooms in the range of $50 to $60 (cost goes down if checking in after 9:00 p.m.). Hotels are the basic rooms size but I have always gotten a clean room and haven't had any problems. Should you want to save a little money, you may want to think about bidding on priceline (a day or two before leaving on your vacation) for a room. I would encourage you to check out the biddingfortravel.com site which is great to learn what hotels come up in certain areas and what prices they go for. I've done a little bit of research on that site and found that some fo the hotels I've stayed at in the past I could've bid on pline and gotten them for around $30 for the night. You can probably also find some hotels for the Jacksonville and Lake City areas as well. Good luck and have a ton of fun.

We drove from Houston to Tallahassee last year and stayed one night at the La Quinta just off I-10 before heading to Disney the next day. It was nice quiet hotel with a good pool and the free continental breakfast the next morning got us off to a good start. We would use it again next trip but Houston to Tallahassee in one day is a long trip especially with kids. We left the La Quinta I guess about 730 am and made to Disney around 2pm after stopping at the Disney center in Ocala for a rest stop and other info. It's about an hour from Ocala to Disney. Enjoy your trip and wish you mucho pixie dust. Wish we were going but we will again soon.

The Country Inn & Suites (not to be confused with Comfort Inn :D ) in Lake City is one of the nicest places we've ever stopped (roadside anyway). Modern, extremely well kept, and simply immaculate inside. A bit expensive perhaps, so if cost is an issue, we've also stayed at the Lake City Jameson Inn, also very nice, and somewhat less expensive.

Both feature interior corridors and breakfast, and both easily eclipse the Hampton Inn there, my former preferred chain. You can't go wrong with either.

We're also planning to do this from Louisiana. However, we'll be pulling a 5th wheel and probably checking in around midnight. My concern is that the parking lots will be full. Any of y'all remember there being ample parking at some of these Lake City area hotels - or maybe a shopping center right next door.

We usually drive straight through - but it makes for one very cross driver!

Thanks

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Kaguilbeau-I went to some of the hotel websites that everyone had suggested and found some pictures. They also have a listing of shopping or attractions that are close by. Maybe try some of these to see if you can find out anything about the area that they are located in and if they are by an area with a large parking space. I put in the name of the hotel using Google and usually it gave me the official website for the hotel chain.

Hope this helps!

Cindy

Cindy's Castle - funny thing you mentioned that - because I did do something very similar!

I actually found a hotel in Lake City (I think) and noticed it listed a Cracker Barrel restaurant nearby. I really feel like these are next door to each other, or maybe a something in between. The map driving directions showed the distance between the two to be <.10 mile. I sort of felt funny spending such great lenghts clicking between "Hotels", "Dining" and "shopping" for it to show on the map.

Anyway, I've decided not to stress about it - and if it becomes too much of a problem to find a place to park, we'll just continue driving!

On N. Monroe - fairly new Microtel Inn & Fairfield. Holiday Inn, Comfort Suites and recently renovated Ramada. The Cracker Barrel is right next to the Ramada and all are right off I10.

The next exit down is Thomasville Rd - Wonderful Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard & Residence Inn.

If I recall correctly, the Lake City Jameson Inn is directly across the street from Cracker Barrel. It's just a side road at that, not a busy intersection or anything. Some other hotels may be within the ".10 mile" radius as well.

We are making the drive from Houston in Sept. We plan on leaving at 11/midnight on Sat morning. We have check at the resort at 4pm on Sat late afternoon. On mapquest the drive is calculated at 16.50 hours. I'm bringing along my DH, DS-5, DD-7, DD-9 plus my sister and her DD-8.

We planned on taking turn in shifts for 4 hours at a time. We didn't want to stop and sleep. Is this a reasonable expectation??

Any advice...

Hi Crazysun,

The drive is doable but personally I wouldn't want to do it. I generally have a 10 to 12 drive from where I live depending on traffic I run into and I dread it as I am really ready to get out of the vehicle by that 6th hour. It's nice to take shifts but I would have plenty of stuff for the kids to do (tv and tapes/dvd, small games to keep them busy). I also find driving at night hard especially on the eyes so you may want to switch up more frequently (say every 2 &1/2 hours) during the night. Good luck in whatever your decission may be. Sometimes it is best to try it once to see if you will ever try it again.

Hi, yecats

Thanks for you input. My DH works nites so he is a vampire/police officer so driving at nite is not a a big deal, plus the kids should sleep well into the morning..around 7-8 am on Sat morning. ...I'll try anything once.

We are renting a full size van for extra room

I'm super exicted.

Hi Crazysun,

Just some driving advise, I would let your hubby know that when he gets to Baton Rouge to take the Interstate 12 exit in Baton Rouge (which will direct you away from New Orleans and any traffic associated with the city, like Houston we still have a certain amount on the weekends). After about an hour and a half straight on I-12 it will reconnect with I-10 in Slidell, LA (another suberb of N.O.) and will even probably shave off a litle bit of time (maybe 30 to 40 minutes) just by avoiding I-10 through N.O. Just like Houston, we have a large hospital community built direct along I-10 and many of them will be going through shift changes in the a.m. We also have a long bridges (12 plus miles) once you get past Baton Rouge heading to N.O. that have reduced speeds not to mention that at the end of the bridge you hit the next largest suberb with both reduced speeds and road work going on.

I-12 was built for the straight shot for those that didn't want to drive through N.O. traffic on I-10. It does work out great but won't give you anything other than pine trees to look at. Once the two Interstates meet up in Slidell you only have about 3 miles before crossing the Mississippi State line. I find that the trip from Slidell to Pensacola, FL is about 3 hours and then you have the pine trees and hills all the way to Tallahassee which is (180 miles) another 2 1/2 to 3 hour stretch. After Tallahassee your officially only 5 hours away. You'll have about an hours drive before you turn down to Orlando and about 3 1/2 to 4 hours from that point on.

Be advised, I have friends who make the drive from N.O. to Orlando in 10 hours. I rarely have had this luck. I have driven this route several times but always manage to get stuck in a traffic accident for HOURS on I-10 between the MS line and the Tallahassee area. Last 4 trips have all worked out this way and caused an hour to two hours delay. Maybe its just me so be glad I'm not heading down. Also, MS State Troopers like to hide in the woods once past the state line. AL is easy to go through and I don't ever recall seeing police. Lastly, we call the stretch of US 90 the "dirty billboard stretch" as you will see plenty of billboards marketing various stripclubs. Have a wonderful trip and see how many pine trees you can count.
