Stop Using My Decorative Towels!!!

My aunt did something similar. She realized she had a ton of decorative "fingertip" towels, so she just put a big basket of them out with an empty basket for the used ones.

She eventually collected enough to cover the holidays and it was really cute to see the variety of seasonal towels.
That is such a great idea. I have a bunch of those and have never used them because, really once someone does they are damp and then who would want to? Blech. I am going to get a cute little basket to put them in now!
I guess I was right! Two days and seven pages later...

:scared1:

I guess I understand my mistake now. :headache: I never before realized how serious we all take hand towels! I am SO off to Kohls to buy a bunch of those fingertip towels and a basket to solve this problem!!!

Thanks all, and I am glad my decorative towels were a source of entertainment!!!
I bet you had no idea you would end up with over 100 posts on this thread. :rotfl: It is quite funny what can spark a debate around here.

This has been an interesting thread. I had no idea towels in the guest bathroom were not to be used. I wonder how many people I've offended and had no clue about it. ;)

I am loving the idea of 2 baskets though. Our guest bathroom just has no real good place for towels. There is a towel rack but it's attached behind the toilet and just really not in a good location at all.

I've just put a folded up towel on the counter because it's easier to reach & just seems easier than where the towel rack is. I have never really liked that though (or yes even tacky with a roll of paper towels but that's usually only when it's just my family over & nothing really formal had been planned! They can live with my tackiness! ;) ). The 2 basket idea would solve the issue I have of never knowing quite how to deal with it.

I think you should get negative points for being such a good sport. :thumbsup2

::yes::

What can I say, I have always been able to take constructive criticism! ;)

Sheesh OP! The least you could have done was come back, leave in a huff by deleting your thread and and thread title. :snooty: It would have given us another couple of days to rag on you. ;) :teeth:

Um... NEVER! :sad2: :)

LMAO, that is such a DIS thing to do! :snooty: ;)

Yes, I am amazed at all the differing opinions on this subject. After learning so much here, I now am going to buy a new towel holder for my guest bath so the hand towel doesn't lay on the vanity. There is a towel bar on the wall opposite the sink, but I generally have a hand towel laying on the vanity for use. There is also a hand towel rack on the wall next to the sink with neatly folded clean hand towels, and a cabinet full of more hand and bath towels should anyone want a clean(er) towel. But, I didn't realize people had such an aversion to using a towel lying on the vanity beside the sink. So, now a new towel ring will be going up in my guest bath so my hand towels can dry between use.

I have paper towels in my bathroom, but I have always been afraid of placing them in the guest bathroom. We are on a septic system and I was afraid my guests would flush them instead of putting them in the garbage can. We use thick, Kleenex paper towels and I really don't want them being flushed into my septic tank. DH often uses paper towels in our bathroom, but he knows better than to flush them. I just thought people who live in the city would never consider that those of us in the country have to deal with septic tanks instead of city sewers, and might flush them.

This thread was eye opening. Thanks OP for posting it.

Yeah, really! Where is the outrage, OP? LOL You are a great sport.:thumbsup2 I will forever think of you whenever I see decorative towels in a bathroom.

I'm afraid I will remain with my 'one towel for all' policy. And hang it on the towel loop. Next to the sink. I'm not spending money to show off fancy towels; we have more pressing household matters to spend money on - don't even have a microwave here yet! :rotfl:

I have to admit, this was a great thread.

My first encounter with someone who was "hands off" my guest towels was several years ago. I was at a picnic at her house and went to use the restroom and she made it a point to say "Don't use the guest towels, I'll know if you do!" We kidded her all day about that.

"So, you mean no one can use the guest towels?"

"Yep."

"Even if President Clinton came to visit, he can't use the towels."

"Nope"

It was a source of amusement to all of us, including the hostess.

Aw this was a fun thread. While I do understand the decorative towel concept, I can tell you that in my house, if I were to hang up those exact decorative towels, one of my sons, or even my DH would use them to wipe water off the floor. If I ever did have that female decorating gene (and I don't think I did), it is in serious remission!

gasp! your husband and sons wipe water off the floor?!!!

They sound like keepers, don't they?

LOL, you guys are a riot!! We laugh, but they do this. I hang up cute little hand towels and they use them as bath mats, to step on when they get out of the shower (because someone before completely soaked the real bath mat). You'd think they'd get sick of hearing me scream "what the &*#$ happened to my &*^% towels. Why are they soaking wet and on the #@!! floor????"

Just for fun, I think I'm going to purchase some really lovely and decorative towels and do a photo diary of their ultimate demise in my home!

When I was young, I got scolded (as did my sister, because she did the exact same thing) for not using the disposable guest towels at one of my grandma's friends homes. I saw a towel hanging on the rack so it seemed wasteful to me to touch one of the brand new disposable towels that, to me, seemed too fancy to touch. It seemed pretty fancy too and I wasn't sure so I wiped my hands on my pants. My sister thought the same thing and did the same thing. The lady actually went in her bathroom and checked for paper towels in the garbage! If using paper towels, keep in mind guests might be hesitant to touch the fancy ones!

I admit I have a full sized towel hanging in the main bath that I don't like people to touch and is purely decorative. It matches the shower curtain. It's not an issue for us though because it hangs on a rack over the toilet where no one is likely to touch it. A guest hand towel hangs right by the sink so it's pretty clear what to use. There is also another guest towel on the rack directly across from the sink. The boy's have their towels on pegs, so they tend to use those which keeps the guest towels clean for guests.

And I HATE it when guests touch the decorative food I leave strewn about the kitchen.

I don't know if that picture by the sink was your actual towel, but that towel looked very scuzzy. I have never heard of decorator towels before, and I would definitely use that towel over that scuzzy brown one that is by the sink where it probably was soaked the first time somebody washed their hands.

I can understand a decorative bed spread on a room that is never used, dcorative plush, etc. But I have to admit, decorative towels just seem bizarre to me.

This reminds me of the great "hand towel" vs "dish towel" debate. My now 99 yo dgm always had one of each hanging in her kitchen. One of the first things we learned as a grandchild was which one we used to wipe our hands, and which one we used to wipe the dishes. And woe to anyone who mixed them up;)!
