Thank you for all the posts in response to my first question. Here's another:
Would renting points for a trip give us a good taste of what the DVC is like?
My daughter has vacation from school in early October. We were thinking of going down for 3 or 4 nights, stay at moderate, but not do the Disney theme parks, and instead take in the DVC sales presentation, maybe visit resorts and Downtown Disney, and Seaworld, and then decide.
But I was looking at the Rent board, and wondered if that would be a good option, if we could find someone to rent from, instead of a moderate.
And speaking of my daughter, are any of the DVC resorts more appealing to pre-teens and teens? Right now, give her a pool with a slide and an arcade near by, and a couple of other kids to hang with, and she's in heaven. She loved the pool at the Polynesian.
And, the Saratoga Springs is supposed to open in 2004? Are they being sold yet? If not, any idea when? Thanks!

If you can rent, it will give you a great flavor of the joy of staying at a DVC property. You can also make a cash ressie through CRO, but that may get a bit pricey.

All you need to decide is what type of accommodation. As you will see, many people who have tried a 1BR or larger don't easily go back to studio...so if your budget generally will only allow a studio...stick with this (although we are spoiled and enjoy a 2BR when we go).

As for which resort...the resorts of choice for "pre-teens and teens" are BCV and BWV.

BWV is hopping with activity and the "slide" and "Arcade" are right there, along with great location near EPCOT.

The BCV is also convenient to the Boardwalk (just around the lake) and the Storm-Along-Bay (SAB) pool is widely considered the best resort pool on Disney property. BCV is not quite as "hopping" as BWV, but still in the center of the action near EPCOT.

SSR is not being sold yet and likely won't be until BCV is sold out (likely somtime late in the summer or early fall).

I agree that renting points is a great way to get introduced to DVC. We "rented" points at VWL each of the past two years, and now we have just completed a purchase at BCV. The only downside is that you will most certainly regret not applying the cost of the rental to your ultimate purchase, but if you are intent on making a trip before you "jump in", I would say that this is a great idea.
