~*~ Stick It! A thread for Gymnastics Parents ~*~

Not sure who is competing as I haven't seen the list. I believe North Sars Paramound Precision and Devlins were the names being tossed around.
You are lucky you boycott it. Last year the scores were so low It was a confidence killer for many girls. My dds team was in the Compulsary division and won 1st place but the scores were very low. SHe scored like a 34.9 when the week before at states she had been getting 37s

I have to say, that I really hope that we don't get involved in it again. I really don't want the gym drama of who makes the cut to compete and who doesn't.

I wish that they would just send everyone and then just designate the team and only count their scores.

Some girls can be very mean and my dd doesn't need the I made it and you didn't crap that can develope if she wan't one to make it. Overall I think the whole team is a good bunch, there is always 1 or 2 who can make snickering comments... As I say, one less drama to deal with!

I hear you on that.Last year we had an A and B team and the girls who were on B were devastated that the other girls won. It just creates tension among the girls. I wish they would do away with it all together. My daughter was not chosen for level 4 or 5 and she was heartbroken.

Back from our meet. 2nd one post-surgery.
She did AWESOME!!!!!!:yay: :yay: :yay:
She got a 34.7 all around. Her best AA before today was 33.225. Girls at our gym have to have 2 34s to move up.
Beat her best bars score by .525 points!
Got an 8.9 on floor!!!!!
I'm soooooo proud of her!!!!!
She got 6th on bars, 5th on beam, tied for 4th on floor, and got 6th all around in her age division (9). If she hadn't had a birthday 3 weeks ago, she would have placed 3rd on bars, 2nd on beam, 1st on floor, and 2nd all around in her age division (8). Stupid birthdays! Normally they go with the age at states, which was in December, so she would have been in the 8 year old division, but there were some gyms there from TN and VA, I think, who haven't had state, so they used their age today to make it fair.

 :thumbsup2 :dance3: :yay: :woohoo:
That's great. It must have been so hard for her to come back after her surgery. I am glad she had a great meet.Your dd must be so happy. Now that she has her 34s she can start working the next level. Yeah!!! Is that her last meet this year.?
My dd last meet is tomorrow.

That is amazing. Tell her we all said great job.

We came home from Chicago last night. It was a long day. DD age group was 7 to 10 year olds and she took 6th in the AA. She had a pretty good meet. There were 26 girls in her age group so she was pretty happy. The meet was great and both dd's bought leo's in the two for $26 bin. Can't beat that.

At my dd's gym the girls need two 36s and place in the AA at the state meet to move up. They also need all the skill at the next level. The coaches do make exceptions to this but that is the general rule. What requirements do other gyms have to move up?

According to our handbook, they have to score 36 at two meets. I have a level 4 so I don't know much beyond that.

State meets are early/mid April. I think after that they evaluate where everyone should be. At that point, there are 5.5 months until the first [compulsory] meet of the next season; I wouldn't be surprised if some girls are moved up to the next level w/o having all the skills.

Our gym doesn't have any set in stone requirements except for having all the skills. There is no score needed excpet for the one imposed by the state.

What level and when did she compete? Our 4's competed in the 5pm session last night.

Looking forward to the meet next year, as DD should be level 4, and our coaches like that meet.

Barb

She is a level 6 and competed Friday morning. It really is a great meet but I think there were some unhappy parents this year. They added a 6th gym and with that the gym on the end had chairs set up around quite a few pillars so that you couldn't see. Our level 5 parents weren't too impressed since the other gyms had bleachers with good viewing. The leos were cute and they even gave dvd's with you pictures on it. The only problem was that it had our girls on beam and another team on floor. I wonder who got our pictures?

Great job at meets this weekend everyone - sounds like a successful weekend had by all!

As far as moving up, our gym doesn't have any score requirements. You just need the skills, but I can say that at our gym the requirements are usually on higher end of the spectrum. For L7, they had to have the giant on bars and BWO-BHS series on beam. For L8, they want our girls to have the Yurchenko on vault, BHS-BHS series on beam (dd also will have a BT, they are saying this is a requirement, but I don't see them holding it to all the girls), full on floor. Everybody basically has the bar routine right now - 2 giants, clear hip to HS and pirouette (sp?).

I think having to have a particular score at States to move up is crazy. It's just one meet (a very important meet, I know) but if you bomb it, you can't move up - c'mon. I guess you know the rules when you go to that gym, but that is just my opinion. If you have had a successful season and you have the skills to go to the next level, then you should go.

Our gym used to require qualifying to states to move up. You need a 32 to qualify for state as a level 4. Well, that was pretty much everyone. So, this year they changed it to 2 34's and your skills. We have some girls who have their 34's, but no way they'll have RO, BHS, BHS on floor by August. Just won't happen, so they'll compete level 4 again.

I can understand if you don't have the skills and I completely understand if my child were not to move up because of a skill. BUT, to throw some magic number out there and say you must get this at States or you stay back, is ridiculous, in my opinion!

Granted, I realize if a child has had a bad season you may want to hold them back for confidence reasons. My thing is, if you have a good season overall and qualify to States and then just bomb at States, that shouldn't make or break you. I am not discounting States at all, but it's just one meet. It doesn't determine if you are a good gymnast or not.:thumbsup2

I totally agree. Our gym doesn't do that (requiring a certain score at states). I have to say, after reading some of what others here are experiencing at their gym, I am more thankful than ever for our gym and the wonderful family that owns it.

We totally love our gym. It is more like a family. Everyone knows everyone and we all do things together. The coaches are the best. Last year a few of the girls didn't place at states and they were actually moved up to the next level. The coaches said that it was for the best of the team and the girls were ready to move up. They do take it on a case by case basis. I think they just want to give the girls something to strive for at the meets. They just want the best for each gymnast.

Our gym has no set requirements for moving up-it's just whether or not you have the skills necessary for the next level.

ours is the same, it all depends on skills. My daughter had an average all season of 36.5 in level 4, and this season moved to level 5 with an average in 4 meets of 35. Her coach now has her doing prep-optional the rest of the season and will be testing out of 6 late this spring. She plans for her to go on to level 7. I think each gym is so different.

Just curious why is she testing out of 6 instead of doing the season? I think since the routines changed in 2005 level 6 provides a great stepping stone to Optionals. My dd had a great 6 season even though her coach had origianlly wanted her to test out.
What is prep-optional? We don't have that here but I have seen it at a few meets out of state.

My dd's team does not do prep-op but I was curious about it and here is what I found.

WHAT IS IT?
• An alternative USA Gymnastics competitive program
WHO IS IT FOR?
• Anyone who desires the challenge of optional routines and competition
• Those wanting a limited time commitment
• Those who are preparing for a high school team, and or level 7
• Those that are stuck in the JO program and unable to move up, but love
gymnastics.
WHY?
• Provide a means and a purpose for continued gymnastics participation.

Is anyone competing this weekend? We are going to Cereal City in Battle Creek. It is a pretty big meet with three gym at the same time. I feel bad for our coaches because they have the level 6 and level 9 meet at the same time. Lots of running back and forth for them. There is also the mens level 9 and 10 at the same time so there will be some great gymnasts to watch.

My DD has her last level 3 meet on Friday. Then it is full steam ahead to level 4. Our gym is more than likely going to bypass the fall season including state meet and start the girls competing in winter so that they are more solid in their skills. Also our gym is really small, it is owned and ran by a young couple in their mid 20's. The female coach works full time nights in addition to coaching. It was a little too much for them to coach in the fall season with the current level 4's, and now have the level 3's, optional girls, and boys competing.

I think that I am OK with this plan as my DD needs the extra time for beam and bars. Last night she and another level 3 made up a practice and practiced with the upper level girls, and she was doing back handsprings on the tumble track on her own. On floor she has little fear, it is the event she loves the most.

Good luck to all those competing this weekend.

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would let you know how Tori did at her Level 5meet on Sunday.

Vault - 8.675 - 9th place

Bars - 8.65 - 7th place

Beam - 8.80 - 3rd place

Floor - 8.35 - 10th place

AA - 34.475 - 6th place.

She was so excited. This was the first time that she placed in everything.
Not bad for only doing gymnastics for 2 1/2 years.

Our next meet is on the 24th. I can't wait!!

Sabrina
