~*~ Stick It! A thread for Gymnastics Parents ~*~

HI Everyone. We are back from WOGA and my dd did great.HEr scores were
6th on vault with a 9.15
2nd on bars with a 9.15( she messed up her 1st cast)
1st on beam with a 9.675:cool1:
7th on floor with a 8.95( looked great scored low)
AA was 36.925 2nd place
The meet was very well run and we had a great time.:)
Missypie Great floor score. And beam too. Glad her meet went well and her coach let her compete even without the BHS.

Great meet! I dropped my parents off at Love Field yesterday morning and saw a group of people who looked like they had been in town for the WOGA meet....little girls carrying trophies, etc.

dis4me, Great Meet! Congrats to your DD!

DD has a meet Saturday morning. Second since surgery. We are hoping for a 34 AA this meet, because she has to have 2 34s to move up to level 5.

BTW, anyone else send their gymnast to summer camp? This will be my DD's 3rd year at Auburn University's camp. She won't even consider going any where else. She did GymDawg camp at Univ. of Georgia 2 summers ago the week after going to Auburn What a waste of money that camp was! I think she's afraid she would have a similiar problem if she changed camps. She knows what Auburn is like, it's small, and the instruction and facility are fantastic. Just wondered if anyone else goes to camp.

My daughter went to camp at Texas Womens University for 3 or 4 years. Lately, lots of girls have been going to IGC in New York and really like it. DD will probably be retiring at the end of the season, so no camp this year.

DD has an appointment tomorrow after school with a sports psychologist. The psychologist is a former gymnast herself and has seen a lot of mental blocks among gymnasts. She says she has a very specific method of treating this. I'll let you know how it turns out!

I hope it goes well for your DD. Sending lots of pixie dust her way.pixiedust:

Our gym has a mandatory day camp ( and it's thursday to tuesday this year over Father's Day weekend :confused3 ).

Gymnasts need approval to attend other camps. I think mainly they don't want them to attend camps at the local high schools or at competing gyms.

DD would love to go to an out-of-state camp and I perused a few sites like FlipFest, IGC, Woodward. I think we'll skip it this year. If she stays in gymnastics we'll consider it another summer. Although if a group of gymnasts from her gym were to plan on going to the same camp, I'd probably let her.

:) Michele

Our gym is closing for a week in July/Aug as our coaches coach at Lake Owen in Cable, WI. I have applied to go to camp to work for the week in their mom and dad to camp program and if I am accepted, Lauren will get to go for the week. I am not ready to send her yet alone as she has never gone to overnight camp herself.

Thanks everyone for the congrats. Good Luck and here's some pixie dust:wizard: for those competing this weekend. We have team championships but not sure if dd is competing yet.
Our girls don't go to a camp per se but last year all went to a TOPS/pre elite Camp. They trained like they do at the TOPS camp but it is better tailored to meet their needs. Not sure what is happening this summer. I would love for dd to go to IGC but not sure how the coach or my pocketbook feels about that.
dd's team also came in 2nd place so the girls were all very exciting to be bringing home a trophy. We went home with 4 total so it was a very successful trip.

Boy do I know about the pocketbook, dis4me. My DD isn't quite ready to spend the night in the dorms, plus with her medical issues, I'm not thrilled about it, so we stay in a hotel all week. Cha-ching! $$$$$

How did the appt go? Were you able to gain any insight into how she is feeling or why she is having trouble. I hope so.

Camp -

Dd has been to IGC before and she wants to go this yr, but I am going to try to sway her away. IGC this yr is $810 for 1 week. I think I am going to explain it to her this way. She can go to camp for 1 week or as a family we can join the pool club for the entire summer? :beach:

Also, her soccer team is going away to a tournament in Hershey PA. That costs money and I know that she wants to do that.

If she misses camp, it is not like she is missing gymnastics. If it is anything like last summer she will go 4 hrs everyday with the option of double session in the afternoon (of course the double session costs more, but she would have the option.)

I think I have a pretty good case that I could win with her....:thumbsup2

Totally OT, but dd got braces on Wednesday. She looks cute with them. They don't look like the braces we had when we were kids for some reason! She was very excited to get them, but now is struggling with solids....

Poor thing also has a cold and can't breathe through her nose, so her poor lips are all chapped!

Life in the gym is going well - no drama (this week ;) )

Awww Life with braces gets better. My younger dd has them, too. She really struggled the first couple of days and ate nothing but soft pasta. It got better though. The only time they bother her now is every 6 weeks when they get adjusted.
BTW just found out we are going to team this weekend. Oh Yeah. I heard they are changing the rules again to get more teams to participate for next year. I hope so.
:woohoo: for a drama free week. We had one as well, so far.

Thanks (on the braces front!)

As for Team Championships, dd's gym is one of those gyms that has boycotted the Championships since the last time they changed the rules.

Should be interesting to see what the changes are and if HC/O thinks it worth her while to go next yr. GOOD LUCK! Do you know the other teams that are participating? Last time I looked on USAGNJ it just listed directions. I am pretty sure that NorthStars will be there (I talk to a mom from there and I believe she mentioned that they would be there.)

DD had a private lesson last night. It was one we had paid for before her surgery to work on her RO-BHS on floor. (you pay for 3 lessons, but you get 4) Anyway, she was getting prepped for her meet this Saturday. Well "Miss I want to be Perfect" has been wobbling and falling on beam since a crash last week. She started wobbling and fell off. She walked over to mount and took one look at me and burst into tears. She told her coach I was stressing her out even though I hadn't said anything. Sooooo, I left that side of the gym. Talk about drama!

I think that I am the only mom of a boy posting on this thread. My son has a meet in San Antonio this weekend.

His gym doesn't like the kids to go to gymnastics camps. They feel that the team kids do so much gymnastics that they need a break. They like them to go to summer camps where they will just have fun and be kids.

Hi Everyone,

I think we're going to let Tori go to a summer camp this year since we're not going to Disney :sad1: but we'll see.

She has a meet on Sunday so let's hope she improves. I'm sure she will.

To everyone else that has a meet this weekend - GOOD LUCK!!:goodvibes

Here's a report on the Psychologist visit: The visit went great. It was very helpful that the psychologist is a former gymnast...they could speak the same language.

The issue will be getting the Coach on board. The coach has repeatedly said she's "at her wits end" and "doesn't know what to do" about the back handspring. So I didn't think she'd care if we went to a third party. The psychologist wanted to talk to the coach...I emailed the coach, asking for a phone number and good time to talk. No response. The Psychologist sent the coach a very nice, detailed email. No response. Last night DD asked the coach if she got the email. Response: "Yes." Nothing else. This is very much in the coach's personality to behave this way; hope the coach doesn't sabotage what the psychologist is trying to do. The psychologist very much wants to talk to the coach and have everyone working toward the same goal.

Good luck to all who are competing this weekend! :wizard: :wizard:

Not sure who is competing as I haven't seen the list. I believe North Sars Paramound Precision and Devlins were the names being tossed around.
You are lucky you boycott it. Last year the scores were so low It was a confidence killer for many girls. My dds team was in the Compulsary division and won 1st place but the scores were very low. SHe scored like a 34.9 when the week before at states she had been getting 37s
