DD turned 12 in November and will have her first Level 7 meet on Feb. 2nd. The USAG girls' season started last weekend. For some reason, the Level 7 girls are less talented, so they are all doing TAAF (Texas Amateur Athletics Federation, I think-it's less competitive and, importantly for our girls, you don't need to have your giant to compete Level 7.)
DD started in preschool because her older sister was in gymnastics. The older sister has long since devoted herself to dance but DD was asked to join the pre-team. Our girls start competing as level 4s (they get scored, but not placed).
DD had a trying Level 6 season. She made state (USAG), but due to a disasterous beam routine, managed to come in dead last. Fortunately, Carly Patterson was there giving autographs, so DD left happy.
DD was on the verge of quitting after Christmas. The back handspring on the high beam has her totally freaked out. (For good reason!

). Her coach convinced her to stick it out. I would like her to have one season of optionals so she can do her floor. I think, however, that this will be her last season. Even though she does 15 hours a week at the gym, she's always fit in some dance classes. I think she'll end up a drill team girl in high school, but she does want to take athletics next year to try volleyball. She has about the longest legs on the planet (not good for bars!!!), so I bet the track coach would love her!
I'm just hoping she can get through this season with her ego not totally bruised, and say a fond farewell to something that has been a huge part of her life for about 8 years.
And yes, we all follow gymnastics on a national level!
