~*~ Stick It! A thread for Gymnastics Parents ~*~

Has anyone else's kid experiencing this and if so what was the recommendation. What are you doing?

DD (knock on wood) hasn't had this problem. One of her teammates has started complaining of heel pain. The only thing I could suggest was wear crocs more often and wear a heel cup during practice.

Maybe your coaches could suggest some exercises to do at home?

Since this is an Olympic year, does the music for Floor change? The parents of the level 5's and 6's seem to hum along with their eyes glazed over, the parents of level 4's are developing nervous tics.... :lmao: :scared:

Judge here, I wouldn't mind a change in the Level 5 music. We kind of think one part of Level 5 sounds like stripper music. :lmao:

DD turned 12 in November and will have her first Level 7 meet on Feb. 2nd. The USAG girls' season started last weekend. For some reason, the Level 7 girls are less talented, so they are all doing TAAF (Texas Amateur Athletics Federation, I think-it's less competitive and, importantly for our girls, you don't need to have your giant to compete Level 7.)

DD started in preschool because her older sister was in gymnastics. The older sister has long since devoted herself to dance but DD was asked to join the pre-team. Our girls start competing as level 4s (they get scored, but not placed).

DD had a trying Level 6 season. She made state (USAG), but due to a disasterous beam routine, managed to come in dead last. Fortunately, Carly Patterson was there giving autographs, so DD left happy.

DD was on the verge of quitting after Christmas. The back handspring on the high beam has her totally freaked out. (For good reason!:scared1: ). Her coach convinced her to stick it out. I would like her to have one season of optionals so she can do her floor. I think, however, that this will be her last season. Even though she does 15 hours a week at the gym, she's always fit in some dance classes. I think she'll end up a drill team girl in high school, but she does want to take athletics next year to try volleyball. She has about the longest legs on the planet (not good for bars!!!), so I bet the track coach would love her!

I'm just hoping she can get through this season with her ego not totally bruised, and say a fond farewell to something that has been a huge part of her life for about 8 years.

And yes, we all follow gymnastics on a national level!

:rotfl: Oh.my.gosh. YES! I heard it for the first time Saturday and thought "Whoa dude!". :rotfl:

It freaks me out just watching it! I hope she has a great season! :cheer2:

(*whispering* I'm kinda hoping dd2 does dance.)

Yup, at the end of a triple session when I'm exhausted and all professionalism is out the window, it's very difficult to not yell "Whew!" when they start to do the split. :dance3:

We would always say that a the level 5 meets. My daughter was one of the 1st ones to compete to that music. I wasn't sure how the judeges kept a straight face and it is right around the time they go down into a split.LOL

I love Optionals. My daughter did great in compulsaries but Optionals are just so much fun to watch. My daughters floor music is Mary Poppins.

My dd's had their first level 6 sectional last night and did great.

8 year old
vault 9.125 second
bars 7.6 with a fall forth
beam 9.0 second
floor 9.2 second
AA 34.925 second

10 year old
vault 9.25 first
bars 8.325 first
beam 8.425 fall seventh
floor 9.15 third
AA 35.15 first

They were both in the same age group this meet. The team took first place with a 109.425. The bar scores were really low for everyone. The highest bar score was 8.875 from their team mate.

Anyone else compete this week. We are now off to Disney on Wednesday. Can't wait. This morning it is 5 degrees here with a wind chill of -10. This trip couldn't have come at a better time. :cool1:

About you and your gymnast:
How old was your child when they started gymnastics?
What level are they at now?
Do levels 1/2/3 compete in your area/state?
When is your "season"?
Do you have other kids? Are you juggling their activities too?
Do you follow gymnastics at the National level?

I taught gymnastics for 21 years, so my son was in the gym since he was three months old. He started real classes at six.

He is now nine and a level 5.

Girls compete levels 2/3 in Texas, boys don't.

When are in season right now. In fact he has a meet today.

He has a twin brother that gave up gymnastics after level 4. He now does ballet, tap and Kung Fu. I had to quit coaching in May so that I could juggle both boys' activities.

Yes, I follow gymnastics at the national level. Both boys and girls. In fact the owners of my son's gym is on the national team.

As a joke, I taught the girls to shake their shoulders to that part. They never competed it but it was so funny.

Since this is an Olympic year, does the music for Floor change?
:) Michele[/QUOTE]

The music lasts for eight years. Now last time at the four year mark, they added a second music choice. The routines were the same but the coach could choose which music to use. I don't think they will do that again.

Has anyone experienced this:

My daughter is currently suffering from heel and knee pain..I took her to a Sports Medicine Dr. who recommends we do excercises to streghthen them. (30 reps) twice a day. Has anyone else's kid experiencing this and if so what was the recommendation. What are you doing?

The heel pain could be caused by Severs ( I don't know how to spell it ). It is when the bones grow but the muscles and tendons haven't caught up. It is very painful and very common. If you have an Arrositi doctor in your area they can fix it in a few days. It hurts during the treatment but I have seen girls healed in 1-4 visits.

Is anyone going to the WOGA meet??

I just got back from my son's meet. He took 2nd on rings, tied for 2nd but took 3rd on pommels, 6th on high bar and 10th all around. I am a proud mommy.

HI!

About you and your gymnast: She is 6, will be 7 in May (I have an almost 2 yo that hasn't started yet).
How old was your child when they started gymnastics? 3, although she did Gymboree from about 18 months until she was just over 3, not the same but she did quite well on the balance beam there.
What level are they at now? no level. She is just in a class as far as I know
Do levels 1/2/3 compete in your area/state? I believe so
When is your "season"? It runs Sept thru June with a mid session break in January. She does a summer session & invites the better kids.
Do you have other kids? Are you juggling their activities too? yes a 4 yo boy who will start martial arts this week & an almost 2 yo ddo. Plus my 6 yo does basketball on Friday nights right now & will do t-ball in the spring & soccer in the fall.
Do you follow gymnastics at the National level?

Thanks...I took her to an orthopedic dr. and a sports med. doctor; both of them took x-rays and ruled this out...the Sports doctor said she needed to do more stregthening excercises to help her muscles get stronger in her legs and her fet. She has 8 diff. excercises (30 reps each) to do twice a day...it has been hard but she has tried to remember to do them everyday! We will see. I also purchased Spenco orthopedic Heel supports for her shoes.

6 more days until her 1st meet!

Level 2 here. We just started two weeks ago. DD is small and has a great physical build for gymnastics...and I had her in for a year or so when she was young. It was great for her sensory problems.

My neice is a gymnast. She started gymnastics when she was 2 and she is now 10 and is competing prep-optionals again this season. She just got done competing level 6 (her 2nd year on that level) we are hoping that she will move to level 7 in the fall.

She is competing Friday morning at Disney in the Sand Dollar invitational. And we are all making the trip (as you can see in my ticker!!) She has another competition in Orlando the end of February so that may call for another Disney trip.

And I have to agree with the "stripper" part of the level 5 song - my neice was the 1st or 2nd year they used that song. Thankfully its not that song anymore and now she gets her own song!!

I noticed 2 people mention that they were going to Disney this week for the Sand Dollar Invitational. What day does everyone's girl compete? Good luck to all.

As far as watching it on TV - yes we do and always have. The owners of my neices gym has a daughter that had been on the national team and hopefully will be going to the olympic's this year. She said she finds out in June.
