~*~ Stick It! A thread for Gymnastics Parents ~*~

I agree with you 100%. Quite honestly, our HC/O wouldn't have a 14yr old L6. That girl would have been sent to JOGA (JOGA is a NJ thing. It is still competitive, but not on the same level as USAG and you do not travel outside of NJ - basically competitive rec) by that age. The HC/O has told the girls that she would not have a 3rd yr L6 and if you do not have your giant by the end of your 2nd yr, you are moved to JOGA. The average age of our L7s and L8s are probably around 11 yrs old.

In our gym the stars do shine, you definitely see the difference.....

I guess we are the exception. We just don't have the division at our gym. I think it is because of our HC/O and her whole approach. It also doesn't hurt that she's a mom to 4 of the girls on team, so she sees it from that standpoint too.

We finally made it home from the Kalahari meet. My girls went Sat at 8 am. They did really well. Jessica was first with a 36.25 in the 9 and under group and Brooke was 4th in the 10 year old group with a 36.175. The team placed first so it was a great day. The meet did take a long time. They only had one floor for gym a and b where they had 4 of everything else. It seemed a little strange but there was not enough room for another floor. Awards took forever and we were not done until almost 2 pm. I think that was the longest meet we have ever attended.

It became a problem when it was time to go home. We were in a blizzard and the staff said that they were under a code 3 emergency which meant that no one could drive on the roads. All the level 6 families were planning on driving home that night. We were able to get the last room available at Kalahari and we did a little team bonding. The room was supposed to have 6 but we ended up having 11. It was cramped but fun. The girls all used the water park and had a great time. The roads were clear today so it was an easy drive home. That was their last meet until states which is April 12.

Does anyone else car pool to gymnastics? Last year we had 7 girls in the car pool. Due to attrition, we started this year with three. One girl was kicked off the team, leaving two. Weekend before this past weekend, the mom of the other girl was in an accident and won't be able to drive for 6 months. This weekend DD has cheerleading tryout clinic and will have to go to gym late every day; DH has to drive the other girl out there, then drive our DD there, then pick them up. What a week!

Hi guys - sorry I have not posted in a while. Well DD has been improving her scores after every meet. This weekend she attended LSU's meet. She made a 9.600 on her vault which helped her place 3rd in this event.

She has been struggling with the beam and floor routines. Especially the floor routine; she has to work on her head stand! I have decided to let her take 1 hour private lessons each week to help with these issues.

I can not believe how mothers of level 2's can be so competitive and hateful against other girls on the team. We have mothers who speak not too kindly of girls who are not doing as well as theirs. This is giving my daughter and a few others a complex so I spoke to the head coach this week and told her a few things; she indicated she was aware of some of it and would speak to the mothers and girls to ensure eveyone understands this is a fun sport, etc.

The mothers of LEVEL 2s are being hateful???? That is terrible. We didn't even compete until Level 4 and we were all supportive of each other's little princesses.

Of course, at level 2, you have NO IDEA of where the girls will be in 5 years. The darlings of some of those hateful mothers will peak at Level 4 or not be able to do a full turn on beam or never get their giant, or decide they want to do soccer or (perish the thought) cheer. Just because you're the best at Level 2 doesn't mean you'll have a long and promising career. (My daughter's Level 4 year, she got the high score in the whole gym for the whole year-9.875 on vault. Is she a good vaulter now? Lots of girls are better.)

Great meet. Both dds did well. Then they had a fun sleepover and good time in the waterpark.Never a dull moment in the world of gymnastics.
Good Luck at states.

We carpool with one other girl who is on the verge of quitting. It is really tough when someone is depending on you if your dd is not going. Does the girl need your dh to take her or are you just doing it because it is your turn? How far is your gym? THat really stinks that he has to go twice.

Terry Glad to hear your dd is doing well but that is terrible that the mothers are competitve and hateful. Our team is really like a family and everyone roots for everyone else even if they are in the same age group.I hoep your coach does something about that. That is a shame for the girls to be put against each other by parents.

All of us who were on team this past season get along really well. Our problem is going to be the girls moving up to team. We have one girl in particular, who just turned 6, who could have competed in the fall, but was too young. She, and her mom, like to remind everyone how good she is. The coaches and owner had no idea until Friday. The owner is not surprised, because she knows the mom personally. The girl likes to say how she can do things better than the older girls. She actually was really nasty to my DD when she came back from her surgery and could do very little.
So, if DD does a second year of Level 4, I get to put up with this. Pray for me! LOL

There were two drivers-DH and the other girl's mom. Her dad works; he can some times bring home, but can never bring her to the gym. It is 20 minutes away (one way) with no traffic and 30 minutes + in traffic. I guess every day it's our turn now. I don't mind helping out but when DD doesn't go (like next week on Spring break) it puts us in a bad spot.

The other mom won't be able to drive for at least 6 months. The thing is, my daughter is most likely going to retire at the end of this season. We haven't told this to anyone at the gym, but that would leave the other girl for about 3 months without a ride. I hope we aren't demonized for it! Since it will be over the summer, maybe they can hire a college student to drive her or something. Life always gets to complicated!!!!!

That stinks Missypie I hope the girl can figure something else out. That is really kind of you to bring her even when your dd doesn't go.

Well, around here, it's sort of the "carpool rule" that you still take your turn to drive, even when your child isn't going. We've just never had a situation before where it will be our turn, and only our turn, for 6 months.

My dd's team is like a family too. We often go to watch and cheer on other levels also. I don't understand how you could be hateful to another child. How could someone be so cruel and heartless? Isn't this supposed to be fun?

Hi guys!
My DS is 6. He has been begging to take classes for a year now. I'm considering letting him. Is he to old to start? :confused3

Absolutely not. Even if he doesn't go competitive, it has been said many times before that gymnastics is the basis for all sports. It teaches flexibility and coordination that will help with any sport that he ends up doing.

It can only be seen as a positive....

Good luck and go for it!

I totally agree! And you never know what could happen. We have a girl on team, level 4, who started taking gymnastics in January 2007. She competed in September.

Looks like DD and I are getting to go to Lake Owen this summer. I applied to the Mom and Dad to camp program and sent my DD registration contingent on me getting a position. I was doing online banking this am and noticed that the deposit check that I sent for DD's registration was cashed. Now just waiting to see what position I got. What I really wanted (camp RN) is being filled by returning moms, I could have gone a different week as nurse, but I want my DD to go when her coaches and team mates are there. So I will just anxiously await the mail.

Barb

Thanks everyone for your support. I have spoken to the coach again and she plains to address the mothers and the kids. Let's hope this works.
