Steve Irwin (crocodile hunter) dies..........

Terri's tribute
STEVE Irwin's wife Terri has broken her silence with an emotional thankyou for the support her family has received since Irwin's tragic death last week.

Her statement came as details of a public memorial service for Steve Irwin, to be held at Australia Zoo next Wednesday morning, were announced. Mrs Irwin, who opened her statement with condolences to the family of motor racing legend Peter Brock who died in a rally accident last Friday, wrote: "I would also like to thank everyone for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers for my family."

She described Irwin as "my soulmate and our wildlife warrior".

"It is my wish that the memorial service be held here in the Crocoseum at Australia Zoo which is where Steve would have wanted it to be," she said, in a statement read out by her father-in-law Bob Irwin.

Mrs Irwin and daughter Bindi, who was being groomed to take over from Dad, are expected to address the celebration of Steve's life.

While still too traumatised to outline her plans for the memorial service in person, Mrs Irwin

made it clear that the glamour and sheer size of mooted venues such as Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium and Entertainment Centre were just not Irwin's style.

"I cannot see how a memorial service for Steve would work in any other place than the Crocoseum . . . of which he was so proud," she wrote.

Friend and business manager John Stainton said the service would be held at 9am next Wednesday, September 20, at the Crocoseum and broadcast live on television worldwide.

The event would also be played on screens in places such as Brisbane and Caloundra.

Because of the venue's seating capacity, tickets would be issued through Ticketek via a small donation to Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.

Terri Irwin said she realised the Crocoseum had a limited capacity of only 5500 people and that it would pose an enormous traffic and access problem for police and security, but the venue was something Irwin would have wanted.

"I would therefore ask that everyone please bear with me in this wish and help me to make this happen," she said.

Stainton said the service would be about 40 minutes long and Irwin's "most favoured musician and singer" John Williamson would sing one or two songs including Irwin's favourite, True Blue.

The preparations come as animal rights extremists labelled Irwin a cheap reality star who exploited animals.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals activist Dan Matthews said that "It comes as no shock at all that Steve Irwin should die provoking a dangerous animal.

"If you compare him with a responsible conservationist like Jacques Cousteau, he looks like a cheap reality TV star."

Matthews's comments have sparked outrage across the internet with Irwin supporters inundating blogs to defend the wildlife supporter.

How to tell kids about Steve's death

Older children may need more information

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin was a hero and part of his attraction to the young was his seeming invincibility in the face of death-defying acts.

His death while filming a documentary in Queensland has prompted child behavioural experts to warn parents to treat Steve's death as a serious issue for their children.

He was known throughout the world as a crocodile-wrestling big kid and not surprisingly Steve's death has had a devastating affect on Australian school children.

Psychologist Grant Brecht said parents and teachers will have to tread carefully when trying to help children comprehend what has happened to the Aussie superstar.

"Parents may find that children are waking up in the night having fears of dying or having fears of being attacked by snakes or crocodiles," he said.

"His passing will bring into being for them some of their own fallibility because they would have thought that he could live forever."

Fans camp out for Irwin memorial tickets

FANS of Steve Irwin are camping out at booking outlets for tickets to the Crocodile Hunter's memorial service next week.

Families wanting to honour the Wildlife Warrior turned out this morning, equipped with blankets, fold-out chairs, food and magazines.

Queues are now building ahead of tomorrow's release of tickets.

Irwin''s adventurous life, which came to an end when his chest was pierced by a stingray barb in a freak accident off the far north Queensland coast on September 4, will be honoured at a special public memorial service on Wednesday.

The memorial service will be held at the 5500-capacity Crocoseum at the family's Australia Zoo wildlife park on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Three thousand tickets - with a maximum of four per person - will be released to the public at no charge from 9am (AEST) tomorrow at Australia Zoo's box office and Ticketek outlets at Maroochydore and Brisbane.

At the front of the queue was 34-year-old beauty therapist, Melissa Power, of Bellbird Park, west of Brisbane, who began camping out at 7.30am.

"My daughter said, 'Mum I really want to go to the memorial', so I thought I would come here first thing this morning so we can go to the memorial to go where Steve's spirit is, to say goodbye and just to celebrate his life," Ms Power said.

"I just love him because he's Steve. He lived for conservation, his family, and I was just shocked and devastated by the news."

Music legend John Williamson will perform Steve's favourite song, True Blue, at the service.

Ten-year-old Kiamba Rogers arrived at the central Brisbane Ticketek about 8.30am today with her 17-year-old sister, Tahmea.

"I think the stingray didn't know him. If it knew him, it wouldn't have done it because everybody loves him," Kiamba said.

Tahmea said she had written a song for Steve Irwin that she hoped to give to his widow, Terri.

"I had my family singing it around the house so it must be catchy ... 'I need you, I love you, I just can't live without you'," she said.

Kelly Sambell, 34, of Burleigh Heads, on the Gold Coast, who was next in line, said she was looking forward to a "great celebration" of a man who "treated everyone equally and didn't want a gold dunny".

"I'm just going to cry when John Williamson sings True Blue," Ms Sambell said.

No, I'm not.. I can't camp out tongiht to be in the line to get tickets a 9am tomorrow, nor can I get up to the Zoo by 9am on Wednesday.

It is going to be broadcast live around the world on ABC.

we will be watching it too. there probrably won't be a dry eye in the house especailly when we see terri for the first time since steve died and also Bindi up there speaking about her Daddy.

Thanks Nutsy for all the info. I will probably avoid watching the memorial service. I don't think I can handle seeing Bindi speak...what an incredible little girl.

I was just wondering if anyone remembers seeing an episode where they showed Terri and Steve meet for the first time....She was visiting the zoo and I think her friend video taped her going up to meet him and he gave her a big kiss on the cheek, maybe I'm wrong and it wasn't the first time they met, but they seemed perfect for each other, love at first sight. So sad.

There's a bunch of video clips in the Animal Planet web site. One of them talks about how they first met, and Terri mentions her friend took a photograph, and it shows the picture.

Here's the link to all those clips:

Meanwhile, I can't find anything there about Discovery or Animal Planet broadcasting the Memorial next week. Hopefully they will.

Thanks! I can't even read this thread without getting teary, so I only watched a little. You just feel like you really know them.

I posted this on the thread about how a celebrity's death has affected you, and I know that all moms who have kids who were fans are feeling heartbroken, and I don't know how to describe it but maybe because it wasn't just about wildlife conservation?

Ds is adopted and came home at two and to help with the bonding process, we used to cuddle up on the couch and watch Animal Planet together A LOT.

After a little while, he'd get bored and spread pillows in the hallway and yell "come on Mama, get in!" We'd row through the jungle with snakes hanging from the trees and we'd see frogs jump from the shore and elephants and zebras off in the distance. I would pretend to be afraid, while he giggled and searched the floor with his flashlight for crocodiles.

I remember being amazed, thinking wow this is what being a mom is like...getting to snuggle in our jammies in the morning with sippie cups, getting to watch a little boy learn and discover, develop an imagination, and have so much joy in playing.

No matter what he had been through, the world was a neat place full of cool animals and he wanted to learn about it, and the best part is that he trusted me and wanted me to come along with him.

Ugh, sorry to be so mushy, he's in first grade now and is doing great!!! He's come a long way. Thanks for listening.

If anyone on the East Coast here in the USA finds out what channel and time please post here. I'd like to set my VCR as we will be at Disney next week.
Thanks soooooo much!!
I definitely DO NOT want to miss the Memorial service!!!!

ABC is doing the broadcast, so whatever channel that is for you on the east coast. I'm sure you can search online to see when they will be broadcasting the memorial or just watch ABC throughout the weekend.

Everytime I read or watch something about this I end up a blubbering mess. I just can't imagine what Terri or his children are doing to cope with the loss of someone who was so full of life...Ok I need another tissue. Amy

All of this is such a tragedy. My prayers for his family. He was such a loving and passionate man.

DD and I spent many evenings snuggling while watching croc hunter. I know how you feel.

Isn't it amazing to see how resiliant children are? How no matter what is done to them, what they have to witness.. with love and attention, they can bounce back. :thumbsup2

I remember that episode distinctly - he even says in the narrative something about "how many people have the very second they met on tape???" in his very excited way! I think that was the "special" that showed the events leading up to Bindis birth..... but cant be sure since I think I"ve been about 800 episodes!!!
