Steve Irwin (crocodile hunter) dies..........

Hundreds of sleep-deprived Steve Irwin fans have snapped up tickets to his public memorial next week after camping out at booking outlets in Queensland overnight.

Three thousand tickets - a maximum of four per person - were snapped up by the public at Australia Zoo's box office and Ticketek outlets at Maroochydore and Brisbane.

Each outlet distributed 1000 tickets - all of which were gone within about 15 minutes.
At the front of the queue in Brisbane was 34-year-old beauty therapist Melissa Power, who had lined up for more than 25 hours to secure tickets.

"It's unbelievable," a teary Ms Power said once she had the tickets in her hand.

"I haven't slept and am so over-emotional - I'm looking so forward to it."

Generosity rules in Irwin ticket rush

The generous spirit of Steve Irwin was alive and well in the mad rush for tickets to The Crocodile Hunter's public memorial service on the Sunshine Coast.

People were always going to miss out with only 3,000 tickets on offer for the public on Friday across three outlets - Australia Zoo's box office and Ticketek outlets at Maroochydore and Brisbane.

That was only 1,000 tickets per outlet with a maximum of four a person.

After all the tickets at Australia Zoo were snapped up in 15 minutes, 10-year-old Zac was left empty-handed and teary-eyed.

But not for long.
Moved by the young boy's tears, Brisbane's Brad Dionysius stepped up and offered Zac his four tickets.

"I think they are very nice, thank you," Zac said, still wiping away tears.

Mr Dionysius said he had no choice but to hand over his tickets.

"It broke my heart seeing that poor little kid miss out on such an Australian icon ... so I just had to," he told reporters.

One good deed deserves another so Brisbane's Kerry Calvert handed her tickets to Mr Dionysius.

The Crocodile Hunter's life will be honoured at a special public memorial service on Wednesday at the Irwin family's Australia Zoo wildlife park on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Mr Irwin died when a stingray plunged its barb into his chest in a freak accident off the far north Queensland coast on September 4.

I particularily like "Steve Irwin Memorial" the one that runs for 30 seconds as well as the one titled "Proudest Moments".
But I cannot find any info on who/where the public memorial in Australia will be aired ? I see Animal PLanet is running a marathon of Steve episodes this weekend........

Dunno, I was looking at something earlier and I saw that thing about Animal Planet airing the memorial serivce, plus a 15 hr marathon.

I remember that episode distinctly - he even says in the narrative something about "how many people have the very second they met on tape???" in his very excited way! I think that was the "special" that showed the events leading up to Bindis birth..... but cant be sure since I think I"ve been about 800 episodes!!!

They aired this episode again last week. I was crying the whole time.

Ok, so it's not the Memorial Service on Wednesday, they are having their own memorial by way of showing things he's done.

Thank you so much Nutsy ! It's broadcasting a little late for my two youngest, so I'll have to tape it. I appreciate you posting this info. I was unable to find anything when I searched. :thumbsup2

Frustrations boil over

GRIEF-stricken fans of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin shed fresh tears after tickets to his memorial service ran out in 15 minutes yesterday, sparking a scuffle and accusations of dirty tricks.

The massive queues at ticket outlets in the morning triggered alarm bells among police and Caboolture Shire Council.
The council was forced to slap strict controls on traffic around Australia Zoo to cope with the crowds expected at Wednesday's service at the zoo's Crocoseum.

More than 5000 people are due to pay their respects inside the zoo, with thousands more likely to cram into the car park to watch a big-screen simulcast.

Police will release details of a crowd control plan on Monday.

Last night a scalper tried to cash in on the memorial service, putting two tickets on internet auction site eBay. Serious bidders sent the price from $20 to $70 within minutes before other web-users lodged bids of $15 million in a bid to spoil the sale.
Fans who queued for up to 25 hours for some of the 3000 seats on offer to the public were generally well behaved. However, one woman had to be escorted from a queue outside a Ticketek office in Brisbane following a scuffle and others were accused of cheating to get ahead in line.

Many had to go home empty-handed after waiting for hours to get a seat.

Police advised latecomers to go home, while Australia Zoo kept tempers under control by handing out pizza and sandwiches.

A volunteer from the crowd in Brisbane wrote numbers on the wrists of 222 people to try to keep people from pushing in but said one woman still tried to force her way into the line.

"She walked in up the front of the line and she would not move," Janice Meredith said.

"Everyone was yelling at her 'get out of the line' . . . then she chucked a tantrum and knocked a barricade over. It was just un-Australian."

A police spokesman said officers were able to resolve the matter and no charges would be laid.

University of the Sunshine Coast senior lecturer Karen Brooks likened the behaviour to a feeding frenzy.

"They're like sharks in an ocean and taking advantage of the emotional state of other people," Dr Brooks said.

She said Steve Irwin "would be ashamed" of people acting in such an inappropriate way.

Australia Zoo marketing manager Peter Lang said tickets for the remaining 2000-plus seats were earmarked for staff, family and "dignitaries".

Disappointed Irwin-lovers who missed out will have the opportunity to watch the service on the superscreen at Brisbane's South Bank and big screens at Maroochydore and Caboolture. Other regional centres were also considering setting up big-screen simulcasts.

Liz Fisher, of Mount Gravatt, was one of the first people without an official number to receive a ticket.

"We were all shaking and jumping with joy, you could hear people screaming with delight," she said.

Ipswich mum Melissa Power waited for 25 hours to get hers.

She managed to grab only 10 minutes of sleep but said it was worth it to spend a day celebrating "a great man's life".

Meanwhile, singer John Williamson said he was deeply honoured to be asked to perform at the service, where he will sing True Blue.

"Steve's heart and soul was at the zoo and it is a most appropriate place to celebrate his life," he said.

:scared: YIKES!! So much for the image of laid-back, "No worries, mate!" Australians!!!

Seriously, too bad there were only 5000 tickets. With his tremendous popularity, they should have known it would come to this. :sad2:

Yeah, they should really have stuck with the original plan and held the memorial in a larger venue that seated 45-50,000.

With only 3,000 tickets available to the public it is nowhere near enough and as for watching it on the big screen or tv... well you can do that anywhere. You guys will be doing it over there, but it's not the same as being there and being a part of it all.

I knew it would come to this and there are a lot of disappointed people out there and maybe just maybe, Terri may have lost fans by taking this road.

A lot of people we've spoken to in recent days are disappointed in the venue.. if the Crocoseum held 3 times as many people it wouldn't be so bad.. but when it only holds 5,500 and only 3,000 of those seats are allocated to the general public it's not a very good image Terri is portraying.

THE CROCODILES ARE CRYING

Endless visions fill my head – this man – as large as life

And instantly my heart mourns for his angels and his wife

Because the way I see Steve Irwin – just put everything aside

It comes back to his family – it comes back to his pride

His animals inclusive – Crikey – light the place with love!

Shine his star with everything he fought to rise above

The crazy-man of Khaki from the day he left the pouch

Living out his dream and in that classic ‘Stevo’ crouch

Exploding forth with character and redefining cheek

It’s one thing to be honoured as a champion unique

It’s one thing to have microphones and spotlight cameras shoved

It’s another to be taken in and genuinely loved

But that was where he had it right – I guess he always knew

From his fathers’ modest reptile park and then Australia Zoo

We cringed at times and shook our heads – but true to natures call

There was something very Irwin in the make up of us all

Yes the more I care to think of it – the more he had it right

If you’re going to make a difference – make it big and make it bright!

Yes - he was a lunatic! Yes - he went head first!

But he made the world feel happy with his energetic burst

A world so large and loyal that it’s hard to comprehend

I doubt we truly count the warmth until life meets an end

To count it now I say a prayer with words of inspiration

May the spotlight shine forever on his dream for conservation

…My daughter broke the news to me – my six year old in tears

It was like she’d just turned old enough to show her honest fears

I tried to make some sense of it but whilst her Dad was trying

His little girl explained it best…she said “The crocodiles are crying”

Their best mate’s up in heaven now – the crocs up there are smiling!

And as sure as flowers, poems and cards and memories are piling

As sure as we’ll continue with the trademarks of his spiel

Of all the tributes worthy – he was rough…but he was real

As sure as ‘Crikey!’ fills the sky

I think we’ll miss ya Steve…goodbye

Yeah, but it makes sense she would want to have it there. I mean, anyone who ever watched him on tv, knows that is where his heart was & that is where he would have wanted something like this. He loved his zoo...It was his life's work. Of course his memorial would be there.

I kind of figured that is where it was going to be as soon as I heard about it. It was one of those "Where else would they possibly hold a memorial for Steve Irwin, but at HIS zoo?".

I think Terri is doing exactly what Steve would have wanted. Yes this memorial is for all those who loved him. But this was her husband, her family, her decission. And I think she made the best one for Steve, herself & her kids. Really, isn't that all that matters?

but when it only holds 5,500 and only 3,000 of those seats are allocated to the general public it's not a very good image Terri is portraying.

OMG. The woman just lost her husband and has no obligation what so ever to hold a public service.

It's a memorial service, not a rugby match. ;)

I think it's better that it's being held in a smaller, more intimate venue-- a venue that meant a lot to Steve and his family.

Let's not begrudge Terri this.

Thanks popeyeohoh for the link about Animal Planet airing Steve Irwin's memorial service. I was getting stressed today because I was having a hard time finding the information.

I would also like to thank Nutsy for that beautiful poem and other informative info.

:thumbsup2
