Steve Irwin (crocodile hunter) dies..........

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Steve is on the cover of People magazine. I just picked it up at the grocery store. Not a very long article, but there is one picture in there of him and little Bob that is just precious! Anyone see it?

Just bought it tonight. How cute are those kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So sad to think of them growing up without their Daddy. :guilty:

From what I've heard, they are talking of having a shrine at the Zoo for Steve, but as for his final resting place, personally I'd like that to kept private for his family and friends.

I don't see the need for that to made availalbe to the public. I don't know that Steve would want it anyway. Let's just keep the Zoo goiing and keep his final resting place private. We know he was buried in the bush on zoo property, but I feel that the exact location should be kept sacred.

I'm very uneasy about the fact that it may be made availalbe to the public. It just doesn't seem right to me.

Memorial Service is to be held Wednesday of next week 20th September.

Tuesday is Peter Brocks state funeral down in Victoria and so as not to take aay from that Steve's memorial service has been scheduled for Wednesday.

What kind of annoys me is that Peter Brocks funeral is 2 states away. Steve died on the Monday and Brock on the Friday and here are the Irwins thiking of someone else in their own time of need.

Gosh they are so humble..just like Steve. They should have been consulted as to when they were wishing to hold it and then Brocks funeral fitted in around them, not vica versa.

Irwin service to be held next Wednesday

A memorial service for Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin is expected to be held next Wednesday so it doesn't clash with the state funeral of motor racing legend Peter Brock.

Irwin, 44, died last week after he was pierced in the chest by a stingray's barb while filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef.

Four days later, on Friday, 61-year-old Brock died when his Daytona Coupe slammed into a gum tree while taking part in a car rally near Perth. His state funeral will be held in Melbourne next Tuesday.

Irwin's friends and family are planning a memorial service for the croc hunter, probably at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

They had been considering next Tuesday or Wednesday for the service.
But Irwin's friend and business manager John Stainton said a Tuesday service would clash with the Brock funeral, so Wednesday was now the more likely day.

Mr Stainton said he hoped to be able to announce more details about the service on Wednesday.

"We're just working through what's the easiest and where we can have it that's not going to be a nuisance to everybody," he said.

At a private service for Irwin at Australia Zoo on Saturday, his closest friends and family sat around a campfire recounting their favourite stories of the conservationist and media personality.

Mr Stainton said "quite a few people" from the entertainment world had volunteered to perform at the public memorial service, which will be a celebration of Irwin's life.

Venue has been changed for Wednesday.. one place they are thinking of now is quite close to me and the other is on the other side of the city. No way will I be going if it's over on the other side as it would take me about 45-50 mins to drive there and then I have the same back home again and then of course there is the parking issue. No thanks. If they go with the one close to me, then I will drive, it's only about a 10 min drive. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

They can't have Suncorp Stadium to do it being grand final week in football and with the grounds need to be kept in perfect condition, but it's not like everyone is going to be walking on the grass or anything.

Thanks for the updates, Nutsy. And for what it's worth, I agree with you. I think Steve should be allowed to rest in peace . . . not have any and all zoo visitors trample by his grave.

Interesting about that Peter Brock. I had never heard of him (but I'm not a big race car fan), but I certainly have heard of Steve Irwin. I think people around the world are more familiar with Irwin than with Brock.

Anyway, if you go to the Memorial, let us know how it as, OK?

Oh, and this is really sad, and sick . . .

10 Stingrays Slain Since Irwin's Death
Stingrays Found Dead, Mutilated in Australia After "Crocodile Hunter" Death
By MERAIAH FOLEY

SYDNEY, Australia Sep 12, 2006 (AP)— At least 10 stingrays have been slain since "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was killed by one of the fish, an official said Tuesday, prompting a spokesman for the late TV star's animal charity to urge people not take revenge on the animals.

Irwin died last week when a stingray barb pierced his chest as he recorded a show off the Great Barrier Reef.

Slain stingrays since have been discovered on two beaches in Queensland state on Australia's eastern coast. Two were discovered Tuesday with their tails lopped off, state fisheries department official Wayne Sumpton said.

Sumpton said fishermen who inadvertently catch the diamond-shaped rays sometimes cut off their tails to avoid being stung, but the practice was uncommon. Stingrays often are caught in fishing nets by mistake and should be returned to the sea, Sumpton said.

Michael Hornby, the executive director of Irwin's Wildlife Warriors conservation group, said he was concerned the rays were being hunted and killed in retaliation for Irwin's death.

"It may be some sort of retribution, or it may be fear from certain individuals, or it just may be yet another callous act toward wildlife," he said.

He said killing stingrays was "not what Steve was about."

"We are disgusted and disappointed that people would take this sort of action to hurt wildlife," he said.

Stingrays are usually shy, unobtrusive fish that rummage the sea bottom for food or burrow into the sand.

They have a serrated spine up to 10 inches long on their tails, which they can lash when stepped on or otherwise frightened.

The spines emit toxins that can kill many small creatures and cause excruciating pain in humans. Few people have died from the poison, but the spines can badly tear flesh and the wounds are prone to infections, including tetanus.

Hornby said people should treat stingrays with caution, but "there is still no need to … kill or mutilate these important animals."

I know it :( Steve was so full of life, I am sure that zest will also be alive in his chidren :)

I also hope that they keep Steve's resting place a private area. We don't need to know and they sure don't need tons of people walking around that area either.

Thanks again for the updates.

It's very sad if people are killing stingrays because they killed Steve Irwin. He'd be the first person to say that it wasn't the stingray's fault. And the killings would just make him so sad.

:(

Shall do Deb. As for the grave site... I don't see the need to make it public. Keep them separate and hubby I think that if they open the grave site up to the public, then you are going to have people coming just to see that and not the zoo. The zoo is going to need all the visitors it can get now that Steve is not there to do the Croc show. He was the main attraction and we just have to hope that zoo numbers don't drop off now he's gone.

As for the stingrays folks... we've known about them for a couple of days. Steve would be ropeable id he knew. So senseless. Yes he was killed by a rays barb, but it was a freak accident. Not like he was eaten by a Croc or a Shark. The rays are harmless.

Colin Buchanan's tribute song to Steve Irwin, Goodbye Crocodile Hunter
http://mp3.news.com.au/bcm/goodbyecrocodilehuntercolinbuchanan160.mp3

1. Wasn't he a beauty
Crikey what a gem
A dinkum Aussie treasure
A khaki larrikin
Throwin' it all out there
Doin' what he'd do
You'd better duck for cover
Cos Steve is comin' through

2. Crazy as a cut snake
Bold as any man
He'd dive onto a crocodile
Hold spiders in his hand
Dodge a deadly brown snake
With big-eyed, "Holy
Smoke!"
You could love him
You could loathe him
But you couldn't miss the bloke

CHORUS

And wasn't he a beauty
Crikey what a gem
A dinkum Aussie treasure
A khaki larrikin
Throwin' it all out there
With his heart upon his sleeve
Goodbye Crocodile Hunter
Farewell Steve

3. He loved those deadly creatures
He gave the bush his all
The nastier the moment
The more he had a ball
1000 miles a minute
A showman to the core
He'd take a bit of bark off
And keep comin' back for more...

CHORUS

And wasn't he a beauty
Crikey what a gem
A dinkum Aussie treasure
A khaki larrikin
Throwin' it all out there
With his heart upon his sleeve
Goodbye Crocodile Hunter
Farewell Steve
Goodbye Crocodile Hunter
Farewell Steve
Farewell Steve

Just been announced over the radio the the memorial service for Steve is going to be held at the zoo. Ticketed entry only.

That is daft.. not that I have anythign against the Zoo, but the Crocoseum only holds 5,000... there will be a heck of a lot more than 5,000 people wishing to attend. So there is going to be a lot of disappointed and disgruntled Aussies.:(

Just listened to Colin Buchannan's song.. it's good.. and it's sad.. kinda brings it all home.

I wonder if he's going to be perfroming at the memorial service. I won't be going tho.. not up to the zoo... had it been here in Brisbane at a central location, I'd have gone, but I can't get to the zoo by 9am.. just not possible.:(

Damn it!

Irwin memorial service planned for Zoo
September 13, 2006 - 11:49AM

memorial service for Steve Irwin will be held at Australia Zoo on Queensland's Sunshine Coast next Wednesday, his father Bob Irwin says.
Mr Irwin, 44, died last Monday after he was pierced in the chest by a stingray's barb while filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef.

His father said the service would be held at 9am (AEST) next Wednesday at the zoo's Crocoseum, which seats 5,500 people.

People who wish to attend will have to make a donation to Mr Irwin's Wildlife Warriors fund to gain admission.

Large television screens will be set up at venues in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast and the event will be broadcast live on TV in Australia, the United States and Asia.

Steve Irwin's widow Terri said in a statement that although larger venues had been suggested, she believed the croc hunter would have wanted it at Australia Zoo.

"I cannot see how a memorial service would work in any other place other than the Crocoseum which he built here at the zoo and of which he was so proud," Mrs Irwin said.

"I would therefore ask that everyone please bear with me in this wish and help me to make this happen."

In her first public comments since her husband's death, Mrs Irwin described Steve as her "soul mate".

She thanked the community for their "overwhelming outpouring of love, support and prayers".

The croc hunter's close friend and business manager John Stainton said Mrs Irwin, Steve's father Bob and eight-year-old daughter Bindi would all speak at the memorial service.

Country singer John Williamson, one of Steve Irwin's favourite Australian performers, will play at the service.

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said he would attend the service if invited by the Irwin family.

Bindi is going to speak at the service?! I can't imagine getting through that. I have fought within myself wanting to speak at my dad's funeral service and I am just thinking, "I can't". Where does such a young child get such courage from? Don't answer...I think I already know.

Yup, I think we all know. What an amazing child.

That little girl is no ordinary little girl.. She is 8 going on 80 I think. John Stainton has said that she is very level headed and this just proves it.

She is very mature for her age, and used to speaking in public.. she does her own little stint at the zoo, so it's just like second nature to her.
