I am confused. Fertility clinics exist without alot of vocal opposition. Each year leftover fertilized eggs are left to die or be destroyed. I don't hear of protesters ouside of fertility clinics ---- abortion clinics get that honor.

Stem cell research uses donated leftover fertilized eggs from fertility clinics --what is the reason for the disconnect? I am really trying to understand.

I get the religious opposition to abortion. I am not disputing that. What I cannot understand is if "life begins at conception" --- why aren't fertility clinics harrassed --- it is well known that scores of fertilized eggs are either destroyed or allowed to die. And if it "OK" for these fertilized eggs to be
destroyed, why would it not be ok for them to be used to save the life of living breathing human beings?

Can someone help me understand? :confused3

I've mentioned this on here many times and have yet to get a clear and logical explanation.

Good luck!

You read Michael Kinsley's piece, didn't you? ;)

Honestly, I have no idea.

No,but I just googled it. SOunds about right to me.
Micheal Kinsley

I just am dumbfounded. Our President is threatening to veto any stem cell legislation that involves embryonic stem cells. I get it if he really thinks life begins the moment sperm hits egg --- but then he needs to treat fertility clinics as defacto abortion clinics and work to outlaw their practices.

But he cannot have it both ways. Well obviously he can - it just makes him look either too stupid to understand a simple concept or too political to give a hot.

Because people tend to be one sided, their side.

This thread could explode popcorn::

Just like hospitals don't get targeted as abortion clinics. What isn't known wouldn't hurt

I think the same could be said for most politicians.

I usually support our President, but there are a few areas where we disagree. This is one of them.

I don't understand the differences in "nuance" either...but this should be an interesting debate. popcorn::

I don't get it either.

I have my own opinions about our dear President, but I will keep them to myself.

Maybe the fertility clinics are next on their list. It's not possible to take on everything all at once.

BTW, not everyone going to a fertility clinic is storing 1,000 frozen embryos they plan to abandon once they have the correct amount of kids they planned. Some of us are only fertilizing what we plan to use and some of us are donating some embryos to other couples so they can have children. So, yes, there can be a balance between the two.

ETA: I guess I should mention I'm pro choice.

There is no difference and never has been. Its politics at its worst.

Fertility clinics are viewed as a generally positive thing by pretty much everyone on both sides of the abortion issue.

Stem Cell research is viewed as a generally positive thing by pretty much everyone except those opposed to abortion.

The common thread IMO, is the abortion issue and since this president is anti-abortion he is also anti-stem cell research.

I don't believe everyone who is anti abortion is against stem cell research.
I do believe that the vast majority who are against stem cell research are, however, anti abortion.

The other common thread is people having babies. No abortion = baby. Successful fertility treatment = baby. And we all know babies are cute and wonderful and should be born no matter what... Even if, in an ironic twist of fate, the mother who had the baby she didn't want gets cancer and dies, leaving the child in the foster care system which messes her up royally and she ends up getting preggers at 15 and has a baby she doesn't want..

...its the circle of liiiifffeeeeeee

/sarcasm (heh)

I have family members whose disease could possibly be helped with research on stem cells, so this is a hot button issue with me!

'nuff said (by me)

I don't think the pro-life crowd views fertility clinics as a good thing. A woman got fired from her Catholic school for having twins via IVF. They see it as going against God because, as we all know, God doesn't want loving couples to have children, he prefers the 15 year old crackhead.

Can they not do stem cell research with cord blood? Are they against that, as well?

There are people who thing abortion is wrong and fertility treatments are wrong, too.

I am curious though, do any actual freestanding "abortion clinics" exist? Most of the ones that they have shown under protest are actually multiuse facilities. So women undergoing prenatal care or seeking contraceptive advice are harassed and targeted along with the women seeking abortion.

I've always thought it was all about the facility.

Most of the protests I've heard about were at places like Planned Parenthood. When my wife goes in to see her doctor about infertility she goes to the same clinic where others go for their regular exams.

Would people protest in front of a clinic with a such very wide variety of patients? No, they protest in front of places like PP.

The really sick part IMO is the number of protesters that believe people shouldn't have access to any infertility treatments. God obviously doesn't want them to have babies since he made them infertile. :sad2:

I am not sure, but didn't our President in a recent speech support fertility clinics . I will try to find the quote, but I remember beiing :confused3 over the incongruety of his thought process.

I also believe we will see major breakthroughs as a result of stem cell research and these people will throw away their picket signs and line up to have their family treated with those very same breakhroughs.

Never fails. :rolleyes1

Planned Parenthood is not only about birth control and abortions.

Click on available services!

I realize that. My point was about them getting the most bang for the sign making buck. Certainly the percentages are higher at the local PP than the general womans clinic.

There's also the little wrinkle that some of them might actually use that local womans clinic. There's a good bet none of them use PP (but their daughter might ;) ).
