State I.D's

Sorry to keep beating a rug on this issue, but I called about getting a State I.D. for my kids and it will take 60 days to get one. The problem I have is we only have about 35 days 'till we go. Does anyone know weather a school I.D. will suffice for a 13 year old? my 18 year old doesn't have one either and I don't know what to do! does anyone else do I.D. Cards other then the DMV? thanks! Helen

Your 13 year old doesn't need one, your 18 year old does. You can always get him a passport with rush processing in about two weeks.

I am amazed that your 18 year old doens't have a govt issued photo ID already in this day and age.

Your 18 year old doesn't have a driver's license? Why does it take so long to get an ID? Is this for flying? Your 18 year old absolutely has to have an ID. Your 13 year old is a minor and can fly with you without one. The ID card needs to be a government issued one as far as I know. Military ID, military dependent ID, driver's license, state id. A Library card, social security card, etc won't do it. Rushed passport would do it as it's a government issued.

While it's a good idea to get that government issued ID, it is possible to get on a plane without one. People lose their drivers licenses the day of flight and make in on the plane. You just have to go with all the ID you do have and convince the airline you are who you are. It's a giant PITA, requires getting to the airport hours early, and there's always a chance it won't work, but it should be possible.

Wow! 60 days? My then 11-year old got his state ID by my taking him to the DMV one afternoon with his birth certificate and social security card (don't even recall if I needed the SS card). We paid the fee and got his picture. Just like the drivers license but without the test.

Then again, I'm in the Chicago area, where the licenses for bribes scandal still hits the news every day....

That's not totally true. I was late for a flight one time (in the last 2 years)and couldn't find my drivers license. My military dependent ID was just fine and not questioned at all.

I would plan on a day at the DMV. Can your 18 yr. old catch a bus or a ride from a friend and go by themselves?

I think the poster you are referring to meant that the military/dependent ID was OK, then they ended the sentence and started a new one with a different thought. Perhaps not the best wording, but something I'm guilty of myself when typing stream of conciousness rather than collected and well structured thoughts.

what state are you in?

here in MS you just go to the DMV with birth certificate & social security card & they take your picture. you have the ID before you leave. i think it costs slightly less than driver's license. never heard of a waiting period anywhere.

Um, what I said is that a military id, dependent id drivers license and state id ARE good ids. What I also said, was library cards, ss cards aren't. There's a period between the two sentences. Re read it. I happen to have a military dependent ID and it is a very good ID. That's also why I started the next sentence with "A".

Thank you all for the information! I checked with United airlines and they specifically said that we could use School I.D. cards with copies of Birth Certificates. Again, thank you all very much for your information! Helen
