Took my car in for a yearly inspection and I can go pick it up later after about $900 worth of work. I hate that. Brakes, a slice in the water pump belt and a tune up...maybe some other stuff... I don't really remember.

Does your state have yearly state inspections for vehicles?

Maryland here, and no we don't. I think it's very unsafe. The only time a vehicle has to be inspected is when you buy one, used or new. You should see some of the vehicles around here, you wonder how they can possibly be safe! :(

Georgia used to but did away with it years ago. Now we just yearly emissions testing though not all counties to this just mainly the metro Atlanta counties

yes, but only on older cars.
DH's van had it done this year.
Mine in new enough, I don't have to have it checked

It sounds like you're lucky your state makes you do them.

Yep, yearly inspection. We've been lucky enough that we've only had to worry about brakes and tires (twice each), and the occasional wiper blade.

VA here, yep and and it is stupid actually..

It is a money getter.

They also wouldn't be checking a crack on any part of the engine because they don't open the hood let alone say it needs a tune-up, as that is not part of the inspection.

Where I go to, and then again this will vary: they honk the horn, a guy will be behind the car to make sure the back lights work. They remove one tire and check the brake pad. There you go.
My last inspection, I was worried and I showed the guy that someone had removed my side passenger mirror as in took it. Well it still passed because I still had my rearview and my driver side mirror, but if they passenger side mirror was say in there but cracked it wouldn't. Lol

There are plenty of cars that after their car is inspected or paid for a sticker, that have no rearview no muffler etc but alot of cops don't mess with that. Now you can fail the inspection and have like 10 or 15 days to get it reinspected with no response inspection fee and have a fail sticker but it something happened like your head light is out or your brake fail caused an accident you would get a ticket for those.

No inspection or emissions testing in Indiana. Makes for some interesting cars on the road....

California, they require a SMOG Check every 2 years.
Nothing else.
Years ago I helped my wife's cousin made repairs to his car in Missouri to pass state safety inspection. None had anything to do with safety. We had to replace the lifters because they were noisy. Really?

I should add I asked them to look at everything because we are driving to Illinois next week and it is an 8 year old car.

No, not in here in BC. I know in the lower mainland (Vancouver BC, they do emissions testing).

In MD we have the emissions test which is also ridiculous. It seems like it's only really testing if the sensor is on or off in your vehicle.

Your example reminds me of the time I got pulled over because my THIRD brake light was out. Not all cars have the 3rd brake light, but if it exists, the bulb better not be out or they can pull you over.

An 8 year old is reason for concern? Our car is 20 years old and held together by rust lol

My New Years resolution is to put money aside every week for an upgrade.

Our province only requires an inspection if the car is sold to a new party.

We use to have inspections, but they did away with them years ago. It was really a farce because if you knew where to go they would just take the money and give you the sticker.

Yes, New York. Luckily my BIL is a mechanic so he takes care of it for us, but we still have to pay the fee to the state.

Never realized other states were different.
