State car inspection

Georgia used to but did away with it years ago. Now we just yearly emissions testing though not all counties to this just mainly the metro Atlanta counties

Yup - my son goes to college 4 hours from us that doesn't have the emissions requirement so he comes home one weekend every Sept. to get it done since our county requires it and that's where the car he drives is registered. At least I know I'll see him once before Christmas every year. LOL

Not here unless you bought it from out of state and that's only when you're registering the vehicle for the 1st time.

I also can renew my car tags online (provided my insurance company participates in sending my policy information to the state and I'm given a PIN number when my renewal paperwork is sent to me) and in 2 days my new tags arrive at my house.

MN here. No inspections. For a couple of years, wayyy back, we had emissions testing. That went away quite quickly.

Yes in New York, very extensive. Emissions test, lights, take a wheel off to inspect brakes, tire tread depth, even the tinting on windows once a year. For my Florida car, no inspection.

NJ new cars exempt for 5 years.
Other cars yearly but they dont check anything except check engine codes/emissions codes.
Emissions only on trucks etc.

They used to check everything now in and out in 5 minutes.

I should add I asked them to look at everything because we are driving to Illinois next week and it is an 8 year old car.
There are cars today that are still under warranty until 10 years. 8 years isn't even broken in yet, unless you really abuse your car.
My long distance trip car is 30 years old. Our other car are 17, 13 and 52 years old.

Massachusetts: safety every year, emissions too, alternate years.

We use to have inspections, but they did away with them years ago. It was really a farce because if you knew where to go they would just take the money and give you the sticker.
My ex's cousin had an old clunker that didn't go in reverse. He told this to the mechanic. Response was, "Oh, they didn't have reverse back then."

We used to do it yearly. They started allowing 2-year plates for cars & trucks up to 12,000 a few years back, and trucks up to 26,000 more recently.

They are pretty strict here in Maine. You have to pass an annual inspection that includes horn, lights (high and low beams), wipers, blinkers, side mirrors, emissions, muffler, brakes, brake lines, emergency brake, steering, suspension, rust... I'm sure there's more. It's a pain.. but it "only" costs $12- a bargain! LOL!

SMOG check here on newer cars is $58 and takes about 10 minutes. They plug their computer into the port under the dash of your car, poof, it's done. Unless your check engine light is on, or you remove or tamper with SMOG systems, the smog tech says it is pretty much impossible for a modern car to fail.

PA - safety inspection yearly. Emissions in certain counties, which is the big money grab. You have a newer car and have to pay $50 a year for emission check?

So your repairs may or may not have had anything to do with your required safety inspection?

VA here, yep and and it is stupid actually..

It is a money getter.

They also wouldn't be checking a crack on any part of the engine because they don't open the hood let alone say it needs a tune-up, as that is not part of the inspection.

Well, it depends on the state. In Pennsylvania, we have an emissions test. If you don't pass the test, they have to check out why. Could be old oil, an exhaust leak, or an internal engine leaks, etc.

Although the tune up was probably not necessary. Sounded like they said that was necessary because OP mentioned they wanted it road-worthy for a long drive.

Right... the brakes obviously did and that was the lions share.... coming from Maine there was a lot of rust on the rotars and callipers (sp?) and they had to be replaced. Some of the other things were just things that needed to be done- especially with my soon to be husband overseas I really have nobody here and need my vehicle to be very reliable. It just got me wondering what the inspection rules were in other states.

New Jersey is every other year not yearly.

Maryland here, and no we don't. I think it's very unsafe. The only time a vehicle has to be inspected is when you buy one, used or new. You should see some of the vehicles around here, you wonder how they can possibly be safe! :(

That doesn’t make any sense. You have to have your brand new car inspected.

$58 wow. Places here in Georgia are not allowed to charge more than $25. Place I go is $15.00

Florida doesn't have any kind of vehicle inspection. It was done away with years ago.
