Star Tours and Motion Sickness?

I suffer from motion sickness something awful. The mountains are out , even the tea cups are are a no go for me, but simulators I can do if a take a Dramamine before hand. On an Epcot day, I take a pill in the morning and I am good to go, by the I adore star tours!!!!

Have you ever seen a 3D movie? If so, does it make any of you sick? I ask this because neither DH or I can watch 3D movies without getting ill so maybe that's the big problem with Star Tours. If you haven't tried watching one I suggest you do so before your trip. If you all can watch without issue, I say go for it. If you become nauseous then I'd skip it.

Thank you for posting this, I was curious about the ride myself. I suffer from motion sickness and can't ride the simulators ever since I tried Soaring or whatever it was in 2003. I also can't do the carousel or tea cups, but I'm good on roller coasters.

I'd say watch the youtube video to see what it entails. I had a hard time watching it though since it is 3D and I didn't have the glasses. But it gave me a good idea of what I'd be missing.

Thank you for all the replies. Last night I showed DH the desription given by jtowntoflorida and he said he'll be fine (he's more sensitive than DS on rides)...also told him the suggestions to close eyes or look away from screen if he or DS does get quesy..which we'll mention to DS beforehand.

Yeah...For us, i wouldn't give my kid a drug beforehand just for a ride.

As for 3D movies, yes, we've seen quite a few and no issues there...so i'll try for the FP and they can always change their mind when they are there.

Me + the new Star Tours - I can ride it twice and then I start to feel the motion sickness starting. For sure I'd be sick the rest of the day if I went a 3rd time. This is one that I now plan to send the older kids on without me.

For comparison though:

I can ride any roller coaster even ones that go upside down and through loops no problem. But, Me + spinning rides = :crazy2: and Me + Mission Space intense = :crazy2: Me plus Primeval Whirl = :crazy2:

Thanks for the reference ;) Good you can ride Star Tours twice then.

I almost never get motion sickness on real or simulated rides.

But, on my last trip after riding ST twice in a row, I felt really sick. It must have been because I rode on an empty stomach. The following day, I ate something first, rode it four straight times, and felt more or less OK.

Might not be an easy thing to explain to a 9 year old, but the cool thing about simulator rides is that you can always break the illusion by looking at the floor or some other fixed point if you start to feel queasy or if everything's getting too intense.

One other question...I think I may have read that the best place to sit is at the back ("best", meaning better chance of not feeling sick). Is this true?

My DS9 is just getting into Star Wars and is watching a movie per week, so he would really love the Star Tours ride with DH. However, I'm reading about it and it says "likely to cause motion sickness". :scratchin Is this true? That doesn't sound like such a fun ride. How are your experiences (adult and child)?

I suffer from motion sickness but Star Tours doesn't usually start getting to me until about the 4th ride in a row.

It has never bothered me but my sister (26) got really sick when she rode it last September. My 4 yo was fine as soon as he got to the gift shop but she wound up having to go home for the day and lay down. She always got really car sick as a kid too...

I will admit that the past few times that I've ridden ST (after the upgrade) I did have trouble with motion sickness (I had the same problem with Harry Potter and the forbidden journey) I'm pretty sure that with ST it is because of the 3D because if I close my eyes for a few seconds during the ride the motion sickness tends to subside. Staring at a non moving screen on a moving ride always gets me. My other family members have had no trouble with ST though so it depends on the person I guess.

This is my situation too. I never got sick before the upgrade where they added the 3D effects. But now I can ride it once without getting too nauseous, but twice will do me in! I just close my eyes til the queasies pass.

I'm another who is ok on coaste but not so good on sims an anything that spins! Now some sims I find better then others, like the Simpson ride isn't so bad buy FJ at Harry Potter isn't the best. This one I found to be one of the not so good ones. I'm usally ok if I close my eyes for a second or two but I had to do this on and off the wholetime. Not sure why some sims are better than others. I think the HP one is becase it sees out of focus more than most. Ok and having said that last time we were there I must have rode the damn thing at least 5 times....never made it with my eyes open from beginng to end, but almost made it once or twice. I guess if you get really motion sick I woud skip this one or if your ok looking away or closing your eyes give it a try. I think the worst thing would be to spend the rest of the day feeling sick. Oh I also use those motion sickness patches you ware behind your ear and find they help some. In Canada we can buy them over the counter but I don't think you can in the US and I don't know about the UK.

I get sick on Star Tours. I'm the type that can do coasters with no trouble, but simulators & spinny things (tea cups) bother me. My advice would be to try once to see how it goes. I felt sick immediately, so I just picked a spot on the floor & stared at it for the duration of the ride. I was still queasy when I got off, but after a drink and a bit of time sitting, I was ready to go. Now I skip it and walk through the gift shops while my family rides. :-) good luck!

This is how I reacted to the ride. Coasters don't give me any problems. This ride made me queasy the rest of the afternoon. If there is any doubt, I would suggest you skip it. The ride, quite frankly, isn't worth feeling bad and missing other fun.

FWIW my husband threw up. The CMs said it happens all the time. He also wears thick glasses or strong contacts so maybe it was a visual thing.

I can get barfy on spinning coasters so I take an anti-nausea pill, but I didn't before this ride and I was fine.

 That's awful. Then why is this such a popular ride if so many have bad reactions to it? :confused3

Their are not really that many bad reactions compare to the amount of people that ride it. Its just going to be much more noted if someone got sick on a ride over they enjoyed the ride. Same reason people are much more likely to complain about something than to give a compliment or good review.

I remember getting sick as a kid, now it doesn't bother me at all, than again neither does MS Orange.

I get HORRIBLE motion sickness. Really, REALLY horrible. I take THREE Bonine every morning before any park- and sometimes I still have to close my eyes on Star Tours. But I love the ride and even if I had to close my eyes the whole time it's still fun for me. I like the bouncy aspect, the visual makes me sick sometimes but closing my eyes fixes me up.

I did SW 3D last year and I won't be doing it again if it in 3D. I have problem with vision sickness. I'm going try it next year if it normal format, if not then my dh and ds can go on it by themselves.
