My friend has back problems, but also loves Star Wars. I believe last time we went to the world we rode the non-motion version of Star Tours. I've heard that the new version of Star Tours is a lot smoother. I know Disney still recommends people with back problems should not ride. I'm wondering if anyone can advise if someone with moderate back problems might be ok riding this ride.

Obviously the choice is hers, but hoping for some more information so she can decide what the risk is and if she wants to take it.

Thanks

Honestly, it was really smooth. We went to US that same weekend, and rode the Simpsons ride, and it was so much worse than Star Tours. The Simpsons ride was so jerky, and so rocky it made me sick, and I don't get sick on rides! But I rode Star Tours 8 times without any problems. If it weren't for the Star Wars aspect, it might be a little boring :)

Are you confusing Star Tours with Mission:Space? Because it's MS that has the orange "spinning" version and the green "non-spinning" version of the ride.

With Star Tours you are never in a vehicle - you are strapped into your seat watching a screen. The seats do move to simulate motion but I don't think it's extreme.

DH has back problems and he was able to ride Start Tours, he just can't ride it too many times in a row. I had back surgery 2 1/2 years ago and I didn't have any problems with ST.

Of course everyone is different and it's hard to say for sure since I don't know what kind of back problems.

I would equate a ride on Star Tours to a drive at moderate speeds lets say 40-50ph over a road with a few pot holes and some hills, you will be strapped in a seat like a car with a seat belt and you feel the ups and downs and some bumpiness.

My EXBF had severe back problems ending in spinal fusion and pre and post op didn't experience any pain from riding ST, but everyone is different so you may want to discuss it with your Dr before hand.

I had my sister in a wheel chair and was able to ride the ride without the gimbal system being activate. The ride was just the same without movement.
I rode the ride with the movement I was able to experience both.

Thanks guys! Sounds like she might be able to ride if she wants to.

MHSweb79 - Nope not thinking of Mission Space. The old star tours, on request, they could run the ride without the ride moving, just the movie. Not as much fun, but for those with motion sickness and back problems it was an option.

I don't know if they are able to run the new Star Tours without motion.

It was possible to experience the old Star Tours without motion. Whether or not it was possible depended on several things, such as how many simulators were running, what the wait was, staffing, etc.
It often involved an additional wait or being told to come back at a specific time to do the experience.

There is less movement in the center of the vehicle, more as you move toward each corner.

I would not suggest something like Dinosaur or Kiliminjaro Safari - - lots of bumpiness there. But Star Wars is smooth sailing compared to those. I have major back/neck issues and wouldn't think twice about not going on Star Wars. Just my opinion, always consult a doctor.... disclaimer blah blah. ;)

Have fun!

It's a very tame ride in terms of actual movement. The PP that equated it to driving down the road with a few bumps was spot on, IMO. It seems like more motion because of the on-screen action, but the actual forces working on your body, which is what you care about here, are very mild.
