If I make a meal (or bring home takeout, for that matter), could you please do me the favor of putting the food on a plate and sitting at the table and eating it? My FIL spends a lot of time at my house and ALWAYS stands at the kitchen counter to eat and it's driving me CRAZY!! I feel like it's disrespecting the cook (or delivery girl;)). Heck, even sit on the couch or a chair, just bend your knees, ok?

Ok, I feel better now, thank you:)

You need to start the practice of laying the table. If you lay someone a seat at the table with a placemat and a knife and fork and a glass of water, they will almost always sit.

I'm dull but my partner and I have dinner together every night, at the table, with the table laid and no TV. Although perhaps we should start watching the TV, it'd take the focus off of my cooking :rotfl2:

I think part of it is because at his house, he and DMIL just "graze" all day, NEVER sit down to a meal at the table except for the holidays. (And, yes, if I force the issue with an actual "we're all sitting down to eat at X time", he will get the picture, but it does seem rather alien to him...).

Now can someone tell me how to break him of putting clothes/shoes/work stuff/etc all over my kitchen table so I CAN set it? (Yes, we have to "shovel" off the top of their table before we can set it for the holidays!)

Love him, just not this!

My MIL does this, and it drives me NUTS! She'll spend like, 3 hours cooking some meal, we will all be at the table eating, and there she will be, standing in the dining room doorway balancing a plate as she eats. :confused3

My husband doesn't like to sit to eat dinner, unless it's a fancy dinner or we're eating steak. If we're up at my dad's house, he generally stands up. He prefers to stand because he sits all day at work.. he's sick of sitting! We don't really have an issue with it. If we're at my dad's house, people are eating all over the place anyhow.. at the bar, the table, in front of the tv, outside if it's warm enough. I think it just all depends on the situation.

Megs, maybe our MILs can "serve" us all together! Last time I checked, there were no paid waitresses in my home;). Let's sit down, relax, and then chow down!

In my house, when someone stands when they eat, they say it's so they can fit more in that way. So really, it's a sign of respect because they want so much they need to stand to get it all to fit in :)

:rotfl2: Hillarious!

I always thought you could fit the most in when you were laying down (at least DH seems to do so on the couch late at night when he's inhaling pizza!);)

I do this too.

My FIL does the same thing, and drops crumbs everywhere LOL. Drives me crazy.

If I'm eating while doing something else, I'll eat at the kitchen counter while standing, usually a bite or two at a time in between tasks, but I do prefer to sit while I eat.

I do not like eating off my lap, in bed, or while walking.

If I am eating something I don't need two pieces of silverware for I often stand to eat. I sit at work and don't like to do it if I can help it at home. If someone wants to sit, they can sit. If someone wants to stand, they can stand. If they are an adult I'll do my thing and mind my own business.
