Stale Cereal

So we've been living as a combined household for 4 months now and I am just getting the pantry organized.

It seems we have several boxes of cereal that are still within their date but are stale.

Can I do something with the cereal? I have 1 plain cheerios, 1 honey nut cheerios, 3 huge totals (this kills me because it is expensive) and 2 grape nuts, one with raisins.

I hate to throw away $20 in cereal, does anyone have any recipes ideas so I can use it up?

are they unopened? If so, call the company and tell them about it. I just opened a bag of malt o' meal that was stale. I told them and they sent me coupons for free bags of cereal.

Some people have been known to eat their cereal. Just put it in a bowl, add milk and microwave. It should make the cereal taste better.

You could string the cheerios and make some garland for outside. I hate it when cereal is stale, so I wouldn't eat it personally but that is up to preference.

Find some muffin and/or bread recipes that call for cereals and use them up in there.. (Won't matter that they aren't the "exact" cereal that is listed in the recipe..) ;)

You could use at least some of them to make "snack mix" recipes - you top them with a seasoned buttery sauce and then toast them.

The cheerios can be spread on a cookie sheet and put into a 200 degree oven for about ten minutes. That will crisp them up again.

I use cereal in place of bread crumbs for things like meatballs or meatloaf. I grind them up in the food processor and store them in the fridge or freezer until I need them. I also agree with using them in some muffins, especially the Total.

Make suet cakes for the birds...I use any stale cereal in the recipe instead of nuts or oats (depending on the recipe).

My grandmother used to make a holiday cookie/candy? along the lines of Rice Krispie treats. It used cornflakes instead & I bet Total would be ok. Mix it w/marshmellow/butter/green food coloring. Shape them in a wreath & decorate w/red hots - or mini M&Ms would be cute too.

Thel less sweet ones I would crush up and save for recipes that call for bread crumbs. The sweeter Cheerios I would try to salvage by putting in the oven, like a PP suggested. And the grapenuts can be eaten warm with milk... kind of like oatmeal. It is very tasty. The recipe should be on the box. I would definitely NOT throw these away. Worst case scenario, feed them to the birds.....................P

I put it in the food processor and use it to coat chicken nuggets.
