SSR's draw

We love to hang out at the Resorts! SSR will be a destination Resort for Dh and I. BCV is for the kids and OKW is for family and friends.

We usually go to Vegas but their hotel and food costs have been rising each year. Now the airfare has increased too. Since we were going to enjoy the entertainment, dining and Resorts and not specifically to gamble, SSR was a great alternative for us. Plus we can take the kids, which we would never do with Vegas.

Dh likes to go out evenings, I like to spa and lounge, so i can definitely see us staying there and not going to the Parks.

With 2 boys, who will eventually want to venture out on their own, It will be nice to have DD very close and within walking distance.

But then decided I've never met a DVC resort yet that I didn't like.

and wanted the 50 years to pass on to my DD-5 later as a wedding gift (How's that for planning).

The price will only continue to go up, so thought I'd take a chance.

I'm sure most of these have already been mentioned, but here we go again...

-SSR has the extra 12 contract years, so it is a new phase of DVC
-The only DVC yet that has a cross between a food court for convenience while at the same time maintaining higher food quality than at a food court.
-The spa is a draw for many (me included!)
-The location, while not a draw to some, is teriffic for me and others who have bought. We end almost every night at DTD so this is perfect for us. We tend to take Disney transportation at night and, as many know, the transportation from DTD late at night back to some of the resorts is a little bit of a drag when you're tired. Well, no more! We're home!
-DTD again is a huge draw--not only shopping, but AMC, watercraft rental, excellent restaurants, Disney Quest, Cirque, Adventurer's Club and other PI fun
-The theme appeals to many--it is upstate NY/horseracing but is also supposed to represent health and relaxation.

Plus, every time I spotted the Disney Institute I thought to myself how nice it would be if they built DVC there. I think it's a beautiful location. Got my wish!

PLUS--for those who had the opportunity to purchase early, there were some very good incentives.

Anything else? I'm sure I'll think of more.

I'm 36, DH is 37. We have 3 sons...they are 11, 9, and 3.

We bought at SSR because we couldn't wait to be DVC owners! I had no desire to do a resale...the buying through Disney was very easy. I liked the 50 year contract. I LOVE the spa idea. Downtown Disney is a great place to walk around. Everyone raves over the Boardwalk...and don't get me wrong, I like the atmosphere there too, but you can walk the Boardwalk and see all the shops in about 7 minutes.

We love to have pool days where we're not trudging through the parks. The pool looks like it will be a lot of fun for the kids. The 2 BR villa is now a must for our family of 5. We need the beds and the cooking facilities for breakfast.

Yes, I still like to go to the parks and will still be able to go to them with an easy busride from SSR. Every DVC is bus ride to somewhere! And call me crazy, but I"m still hoping for the opportunity to eventually stay at all the DVC's with some luck at the 7 month booking window. But if not, I'll take my brand new digs at SSR with a big 'ol smile!

Thought of two more:

Dues are fairly low--only lower is OKW
Point requirements are slightly lower than BWV/BCV

I'm 29 and single. I always end up at DTD at night so that was a definite draw for me. I also had stayed at the old Disney Institute and loved the location, so that was a bonus. And as much as I would love to own at the Beach Club because of it's theme and how close it is to Epcot, I would much rather have lower maintenance fees and have the extra 12 years. And I also liked going the easy route of buying through Disney as opposed to the resale route. I bought early enough that I got the $79/pt deal. I've already added on another 25 at the 89/pt price. All that being said, I am going to try and stay at all the DVC resorts at some point. In fact on my first trip "home" I'm doing 7 nights at SSR and 6 at OKW. But as everyone here says, buy where you want to stay. If I only ever stay at SSR I'll be happy.

Good for you!!! As former divorcee myself and new DVC owner,
if my ex bought DVC that is the 1 thing that I would not be able to complain about my child support payments being spent on.

My kids love WDW and this summer will be their 3rd trip in the last 5 years, 2 with me (02, 04)and one with their mother (2000).

I have a close friend that said he would not remarry woman with 4 kids, he has 2, but he did anyway. If she would have had DVC membership like you, he might be much happier than he is now.

Our 200 pt SSR contract is our first experience with DVC. We're excited about SSR because:

1) It's new and we really like the theming, style of furnishings and laid back atmosphere.
2) While BCV and BWV are exciting and in the middle of the action, when I'm done with the parks I crave time away from all of the Disney craziness.
3) The spa! (I was a "spa virgin" before we went to Vegas...but no more! )
4) Easy access parking. We always drive...and intend to use our car quite a bit while we're there.
5) Easy access to Downtown Disney. We love the shops and restaurants. I can also see DQ being a major destination in our fuuture.

Also, it was so easy to buy from Disney! :)

As far as the location goes...I think it's excellent. I agree with the previous post... "Proximity doesn't mean much to me unless I can basically fall out of bed and land there." While the Boardwalk is cool and I'm sure we will take turns staying there or BCV...the only place we really took advantage of was Jellyrolls (OK...and the bakery). Not enough draw for me...I think it could be enhanced quite a bit. I don't think the DI property was marketed well when it was Disney Institute. I've been to DD many times over the years and barely noticed it across the lake. Now SSR is a beautiful resort that will probably draw a ton of folks over from DD just to take a peek. I'm sure DVD is counting on this for a bunch of future DVC sales.

and hopefully coming soon!

Our biggest reasons for picking SSR were the price break, the fact we had sometime before purchasing to pay for it and were fortunate to be able to pay in full before interest started, timing of having it for 50 full years and passing it down to our someday children and location. We usually go in off peak times and find ourselves looking for places to eat or go in the evening. Having DTW right there is a big plus for us of having many options of food and it always seems like a good place to go and hang out on a day you might not want to go to the parks. I think that if I had a second choice it probably would have been WL so it may be an add on some where down the line but for now we're pretty happy with what we've decided.

The draw for me was being close to DTD, kids love to shop. The price point at time of buying, 79 with 50 years. The lay out of the resort, along with pool. Knowing if I go down without kids it is short walk from DTD after a night at PI. Pluss it's Disney.

Maybe I'm just cynical, but the biggest draw for the general public (not this board or any other that might exist) is the fact that it is the only resort for sale right now by the nice people who work the kiosks and the DVC sales staff and the majority of people won't do their due diligence and find out all there is to know about DVC before becoming overwhelmed with glee and signing on the mickey-eared line.

Or something like that.

for me, one word:

spa!!!!!

I think people should just wait until its open and draw their own conclusions from actual visits to the resort. Right now everyone is speculating and saying what they heard. Its going to be open in couple weeks! Time will tell what the real truth is.

I've stayed at the old Disney Institute and loved being able to wind down after the parks. It was quiet and relaxing.

DH loves EPCOT and I love MK. Boys love MGM (Tot & RnRR!!) and we all love DTD so I think the location works best for us. I think the boys will get to enjoy it even more as they get older.

The 50 years was definately a plus. My kids and grandchildren will be able to enjoy this for a long time. And I'll only be 88 when it ends;)

I liked the option of financing through Disney. I can always pay it off early if I want to.

It also looks beautiful. We are anxiously awaiting are trip in August.

Joe,

I don't think anyone can say that you are only a Curmudgeon in training anymore.;) You are now full fledged. ;)

When we first walked into OKW years ago, paying cash for a 2BR and not even knowing anything about DVC, we fell in love and knew that was the place for us. It was great for our big family and we loved the layout and location. Then we found out it was a timeshare. We took a tour of Boardwalk and saw the Beach Club location -- not yet started -- but OKW just felt like "home."

So our home is OKW.

To us, the variety of the other resorts is appealing and we will try them all. Personally, SSR is just as attractive as any. Maybe even more so.

We are past the theme park infatuation. We like luxury, relaxation and rest. I think most everyone on this board will be there someday. 40 years is a LONG time. Skin wrinkles, hair grays -- and being 5 minutes from Epcot doesn't matter as much after a while. So let the grandkids take a bus. You'll be away from the crowds. You'll be just as close to the Orlando opera, theatre or whatever from SSR.

:hyper: close to Epcot:hyper: close to Epcot:hyper: close to Epcot

Ahhh -- CHILL!

Wait a couple years. Age a couple years. Then check out SSR. Unless Disney really screws up, I'm sure it will be just as magic as the others.

The appeal of SSR to me is we like the location. We don't spend all our time at the parks and love Downtown Disney. We also always have a car and love to shop the surrouding areas and the outlet malls. This location is ideal for someone that wants to go off property and not be stuck in alot of park traffic.

I love the theme and the decor. From the photos I think it will be the most luxurious in decor. The room photos remind of the decor of the Grand Floridian. We love the Spa and it will be nice to be so close.

I think the pool, and eating areas will be really nice. We love having outside entrances and close parking.

No one resort is close to every park so I see no disadvantage to being in this location. While BW and BC are the best for MGM and Epcot, it is a pain to go anywhere else. Same with WL Villas to the MK, but we know what it's like to go to the other parks from there.

I think it will appeal to alot of people due to the fact we are all so different and Disney realizes that.

I agree with the OP I just dont get it.
SPA - No Interest
DTD - After a dozen trips to WDW is kind of Old , We go every trip but usually Just once.
Pleasure Isle Fireworks? ha ha ha
12 extra years . I hope im alive in 2042
Basically Old Key West location with smaller rooms and higher point structure.
I am sure it will be a beautiful resort (all WDW ones are). and many will love it but for me it is the first DVC resort I have no interest in staying AT.

I'm not sure SSR appeals enough for me to buy but it may appeal enough for me to stay on weekends.

- people say the old institute was quiet. hopefully that will be true of SSR.

- walking distance to DTD. This one I'm not sure so sure of...walking back from DTD in the dark in an area with relatively easy escape routes to I-4 or off property

- I think Sammie's point about proximity to parks being a non-issue is a good one. Unlike OKW you do at least have to ability to get to DTD easily even if I might prefer to get a bus back from it.

- Greater opportunity to explore the Westside or take relaxed day time walks on non park days.

You hit the nail on the head for me! Hubby and I are "Older" having done the family vacations with the kids to Disney for years. Now it's our turn to just relax and soak up the atmosphere. That's what sold SSR to us!

Can't wait for our first trip "Home"

Carol

Just out of curiousity, of the people who have bought SSR, how many are you long-time Disney visitors, owners at other DVC resorts, have children, age groups? Just curious, because it sounds like the demographic for SSR is going to be a bit different than the others (e.g., more Disney veterans who have already done the Disney thing for years and aren't as interested in the parks being the focal point of their vacation, may have had kids who are now older and no longer in tow or as interested in WDW vacations). I'm certainly not trying to imply its like a Disney retirement community or something, I'm sure there are many younger adult members too who just prefer a quiter, more adult vacation, and still but it does sound like SSR will have a different feel to it.
