SSR - villas decorated beautifully, but wouldn't stay again

Just got back from WDW a few days ago. It was great! We were there for almost 2 weeks and the last 4 days of the trip were spent in the villas at SSR (first part was BWV & BCV).

The ongoing construction didn't bother us and yes the next phase will include 6 more building and 2 pools.

The pictures of SSR seem to be a little misleading as far as the coziness of the resort goes, which I think is lacking. Our general feel of the resort was "it's an apartment complex". Just in the way that the buildings are arranged and the fact that you enter your villa from the outside of the building.

When I checked in, I was not welcomed as warmly as I had been at BWV and BCV. Part of this may have something to do with the fact that much of the staff is new and still learning their jobs. Lucky for us, there were many rooms available upon checkin (at 11am) and I was able to choose the building that we wanted to be in. Thankfully, I had read the boards, so I knew to pick something that was close to the feature pool and central services. The location worked out wonderful for us, but I wonder how hard that will be to get as the resort begins to sell out.

We had villa 4121, a dedicated 2 bedroom located in The Springs. The decor in the villas is beautiful. Thomasville furniture. Very relaxing. We only had one patio which exited from the living room. I really like having more than one patio or balcony. Maybe it is the way that all dedicated 2 bedrooms are designed, but the closet in the master suite was much smaller than the 2 closests available in the 2nd bedroom. I am not sure that I understand that logic.

The couch was much shorter than in the other villas so it only fits 2 comfortably. The beds are tall (floor to top of matress), which was ok, but if I was any shorter, I would need a step stool. A lower bed might have been a better choice for the designers to make.

All in all, we were pretty pleased with the room. The last couple of days we did have a problem with the AC not working properly and making the room hotter rather than colder, but called it in and figured that not all of the bugs had been worked out yet, so I am sure that will be fixed.

The feature pool is nice, they have a small slide for the little kids. The pool is open until 10pm, they say, but actually you can stay past that, there just isn't a lifeguard. I do believe the larger slide is closed at 8pm, but I don't know why.

The Artist's Palette is an okay set up, but we didn't have a chance to try the food. The menus change daily and it looks like there is a small variety. It was disappointing to see that it is the only restaurant available and it does not look like there are plans to add another (but I could be wrong). We didn't find any SSR trading pins, guess they were out. Also, there weren't any SSR mugs available, they were using Spring Break mugs that we saw at some of the other resorts. Some of the cashiers were very new and didn't bother to help you get checked out. Probably in the future, these things will get worked out.

There is a dedicated bus to MK and one to Epcot, so we didn't have additional stops, but the ride was longer than staying at the Epcot resorts. We took the launch to DD which drops you off at the Marketplace. Once we had walked over to the West End, we decided that the walk back to SSR would take just as long as getting back to the launch at the Marketplace. The walk back was nice and quiet, but the bridge across to SSR is not in a convenient place and it would be nice if they put one up a little closer to DD. Also, after crossing the bridge (at night) we realized that we were sharing the walkway next to SSR with golf carts. It seems that this could be dangerous in the long run. Also there isn't a direct path to get to the launch at SSR (villas are on one side of central services and the launch on the other).

Since SSR is further out than we would like, we found ourselves driving our vehicle more than using transportation because it was quicker.

I do have to say that the spa services were wonderful. However, I can stay elsewhere on property and still go use the spa anytime.

It wasn't a bad stay and I am sure that once all the trees grow up, it will be more beautiful. But we would rather stay where there are more amenities, less of an apartment complex feel, and where transportation is more conveniently located.

Just my opinion and experience. Not bad, but not for us. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

I am a big fan of BWV and BCV but I liked SSR too. We were in Congress Park in May. As others have posted before, the walk to the pool area was not very far (especially compared to BWV or BCV-where you also walk, but inside rather than outside).

The bridge we crossed to get to DTD was up by the main road that DTD is on. It led you right to where the DTD bus stop is.

The staff at the SSR store could have been better. My son has a really neat Buzz Lightyear water bottle cover that we bought years ago. He had it in the store, but not when we got back to the room. I called the front desk when I noticed it was gone (store was closing when we left it). They said to call the store in the a.m. We did and they acted as if we were a bother. They said they found nothing. We went to the parks and when we returned I called again-same story. We tried calling Lost and Found-no luck. On the third day I called in the afternoon and got a quick, "No we don't have it here." Finally that evening, I went into the store. I explained to the woman (the manager I think) that I was sure he lost it in the store when he was looking at a game. She went into the back room and moments later out she came with Buzz!

We had seven nights at SSR about two weeks ago. We had a marvelous stay, excellent CMs (Carmen was wonderful and got us the best view in the resort). We talked with other CMs at the front desk and they were also very friendly and helpful.

We had a top floor in Congress Park (lock off studio - 2423) right near the elevator, so we had a direct center view of DTD. The housekeeping staff were very good. And we thought we had a problem with the refrigerator, but it just took a while to cool off. But Engineering was there within 15 minutes of my call to check it out.

We think this is one of the prettiest resorts. It looks like a resort and not just a hotel. I guess that's why we like just about all the DVC resorts except for BWV. Even BCV and VWL are separate from the main hotel. When the construction is finished it will be positively elegant. 'Course OKW is our first home resort, so SSR is similar to OKW in the community feel.

We got so many "Welcome Homes" at SSR, that I just couldn't count them all.

I don't think I have seen a big closet in any of the master bedrooms except for OKW. When we stayed at BCV and VWL, both master bedroom closets were rather small. But I love the hall closets near the entry - especially if the room is dedicated.

For my family the closets make sense. Just two of us in the master bedroom but 4 kids in the second bedroom.

The "apartment" feel is what cinched his dislike (I am speaking euphemistically here) for SSR. Our really wonderful guide was giving us the "grand tour" of a GV, and dh was tugging at my shirt, saying "Let's go NOW". SSR creeped him out for some reason. I didn't have his "aversion"....it just didn't do that much for me (please don't get upset with me....it's a beautiful resort....it's just my personal opinion here).

But, the whole "apartment" feel really bugged him a lot.

But, that's what makes DVC so great....LOTS of choices!!!

I didn't like the closet/dressing area/bathroom of the studio we were in. Too many doors made it difficult for someone to be in the dressing area and have anyone else use the closet or be coming and going from the bathroom. I liked the kitchenette area better than at OKW, but since I rarely use studios, this is probably not too much of a concern for us. We have not stayed in a SSR 2 bedroom yet. I just have a hard time giving up the 2 bedroom units at OKW. I would probably do a studio at SSR again as long as it was just the 2 of us.

Beca - I have to agree with your husband! We toured SSR during spring break this year. We needed to kill some time before our late flight home so we visited the resort and picked up the free DVC pin! Our family really enjoyed the BW Grand Villa once so we thought we might like trying SSR GV (less points). The decor and furniture were great but we had trouble with how boring the entrance was. It just seemed weird to have this "richly" furnished room and the exterior hallway feel like a cheap apartment building. We have stayed at HH, in fact we loved it so much we are going back this summer. HH has the exterior entrances, but they feel "right". The woodsy cabin feel works. We didn't think the exterior entrances worked as well at SSR.

We did like the looks of the pool. It also seemed like they had a cool store/counter service area. We liked the idea of having a place to get easy carry out food.

I suspect the higher beds have more to do with mousekeeping ergonomics than guest height. I bet it would save a lot of bending over for them, or at least maybe not so far.

I agree with Beca - I like the DVC choices. SSR is probably not for me either, but I'm glad that so many people like it. Keeps them out of BWV & BCV. :rolleyes1

Deb, I could have written this almost word for word (in fact I think we were in 2323)! We had a short 3 night stay almost a month ago and honestly didn't have high expectations based on feedback here on the DIS...but we were really impressed! The staff was wonderful, including the cashiers at Artist's Palette...like walking us to our table rather than having us make more than one trip and volunteering the DVC discount. Tons of "Welcome Home"s (that I feel are lacking at our home resort - BWV) and my DS (17 months) loved the fountain area at the main pool. Our stay was lovely and in fact I went home and checked the points difference for our upcoming trip in Sept...but we're in a standard view at BWV so we're keeping that since its less points and we do really like the location of BWV. Like Beca said, the diverse choices are what makes DVC so great!

I never like to stay at a new resort. I figure there are always kinks to be worked on, so I usually wait before I stay at any new DVC resort. :wizard: I have yet to stay at BW!!(and I own there).

We did a tour of SSR and I did like the resort. :cheer2: The food court area was lovely as was the pool area. I did like the GV double entrance if we travel w/another family or in-laws. However, the resort doesn't feel finished yet, so I will wait until I stay. For now I can visit! :moped: The "under construction" aspect and set up the streets definately give it a feel of an apartment complex-albeit a beautiful one!

I think for me the location is not what I need, yet. Still have young kids who LOVE OKW the best!! We also love VWL. So until I feel the need to be closer to DD, I have other choices. When I am ready for SSR, I am certain it will seem like a beautiful new resort to me! :cool1:

I just love these smilies!! :love1:

I think this goes back to a real issues that seperates most of us...do you want hotel type accomidations or "home" accomidations. hmm Home probably isn't the correct wording - how about "seperate" feeling accomidations.

We have small children and the set up of OKW and SSR REALLY appeals to us right now. We can park close to our units. We have our own entrance and exit without having to worry about the boys being loud in the halls (which they are good...but its exciting to be at WDW...so it sometimes boils over). We can pack and or unpack on our whim. The walk around the grounds is part of what appeals to us after a day of hustle bustle at a park, etc.

Its all about taste. Thank you for giving us your opinions!

As I like to say....More room for me!!! :cheer2:

Beca,

Don't let the attackers on this board make you nervous about posting your dislike for a Resort. I took a lot of heat for my posts on SSR. I for one, couldn't agree more with your families views of this Resort. We also don't want an apartment or condo on vacation. Where is the poolside breakfast and lunch? Where is the sit down restaurant with room service? It is a lot of money to buy into DVC and we choose to utilize our points at full service facilities not apartments. Thanks for your views.

I am glad that everyone is enjoying reading my review, even though we all have different tastes and styles when it comes to vacation.

I have to agree with all of you that DVC does a great job with providing a variety of resort options. They all have their pros and cons. For us, we personally like the feel of luxury that we get at BWV & BCV. We live in such a small town and it is rare to have all the amenities so close at hand, so this appeals to us. Dave, I couldn't agree more. We have invested alot in DVC and enjoy full service accommodations.

It was great checking out a different resort, I am glad we did. Makes me realize what we like most about our DVC choices. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

I seem to remember reading somewhere that SSR has no elevators in some of the buildings? Is this correct? It would make a major difference when requesting room location. Thanks,

Bryan

I think you are getting confused with OKW. OKW only has elevators in 3 buildings (all the newest buildings) but SSR has elevators in all the buildings.

There was an elevator in our building, but we didn't use it since we were on the ground level. In our building, the elevator was centrally located to the front of the building. I would assume that it is that way in all the buildings. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

OMG, you got it!

we're drawn to BWV & nothing else compares, in our eyes, but had trouble pin-pointing exactly why (we know we love the EPCOT walk, so that's a part of it, but even BCV just didn't have that "feel").

looking back, our fav non-DVC resort says have been the GF (turret room) & YC concierge.........
oh my, when did we become resort snobs??!! :guilty:

(& btw, we own at BWV, BCV & SSR)

Isn't it great that DVC gives us each what we like? Whatever you love at BWV must be the feeling that I don't. I'd rather stay at SSR or OKW over BWV any day. And BCV and VWL have some of the similar feeling to me even though they do have inside corridors.

Our favorite non-DVC stays were also GF (concierge) and AKL (concierge). I guess we're resort snobs, too.
