SSR seems empty

We are here at SSR right now. Boy the place feels really empty. Tonight after Fantasmic my family of 4 shared a bus with 5 other people. It's been like that since last Saturday. I noticed that people are complaining about the long wait to get a bus to the parks. So far we haven't experianced that, longest wait was 25 min. We were talking to another family yesterday and they had been waiting for almost an hour to get a bus to MGM. I told them to call the front desk and get a bus to come pick them up. They did and 15 min later a bus showed up. We are having a great time. I would recommend the SSR to anyone it is really beautiful.

We'll be there for the first time in about 4 weeks! I was wondering how much construction is still going on and if it's distracting at all. We've requested a studio in Congress Park for the convenience to DD, etc. What did you think of the options at Artists's Palette? I hope it's still a bit "empty" when we're there...makes the pool much nicer when it's not crowded!

In the past, we've always stayed at WL or VWL and, on this trip because of lack of availability, we're trying 2 new places: SSR and POR....hoping for a relaxing vacation and it sounds like both may work out very well.

I stayed at SSR this past October and it was "empty" then too. I liked it that way. Once all the buildings are open it's going to be a nightmare though. The artist's pallatte is very, very, small with limited food choices. The main pool is beautiful but once all the buildings open it will be way too crowded I think. I don't know what they were thinking when they designed it. Don't get me wrong, I loved it there and even added on points but I am concerned about the size of the main areas in comparison to the amount of units. It just doesn't add up.

We love SSR as well but share your concerns about size and capacity. I agree it just doesn't seem to add up. I mean AP is way too small if all of the buildings were open and the main pool is also a tad on the smallish side. We have been down twice in the last year and both times the place had a very empty feeling but I’m not complaining though, we’d love it if it stayed just like it is now as far as crowds go.

we had the the quiet pool all to ourselves last night over in Congress Park. I am thinking the same thing about AP once this place gets full. Seems to me DVC is counting on the majority of folks cooking in there units. I was speaking to a family last night while waiting for a bus to come. They were complaining that there wasn't any kind of resturants located in this hotel. I told them about AP and the Turf club, but they said thats not a resturant thats more like a fancy 7-eleven. They went on about how much they paid to stay here but no place to eat. I told them that SSR is was a Vacation Ownership and maybe that was why it wasn't what they expected. They had no clue, because their response was "this is a time share, no wonder"?? Then I explained what DVC was and why I don't consider it a time share. I then reminded them about how close DTD was and they had a lot to choose from. They did admit how nice the room was here at SSR. I did sort of meet a couple of DIS Board members. I was in the spa by the quiet pool and they where telling another couple about the DIS boards and how they can rent there points out by just going to the DIS boards. They also were stating how they never stay on property on a Friday or Saturday night, to point costly. Sorry I didn't say any thing, I didn't want to butt in and be a third wheel. So if you where here at SSR the other night in the SPA having this conversation, I wanted to say I agree with you about the DIS Boards this is the best place to find anything and everything about Disney. Oh, I do stay Fri and Saturday night on points. Don't feel like moving around all the time. One other thing I don't agree with was, these folks said they will come use the facilities even on days they are staying off property. I think this is wrong. They said they just flash there DVC card and the gaurd lets them in. They then use the pool and hang out here and then go back to the country inn and suites for the night.

SSR will become an overflow property. DTD is not enough of a draw. People will give it a try in the beginning because it is the new resort. After that the people will return to their favorites. SSR will nevr be booked IMHO. Only time will tell.

Boy, a guy takes a week or two off from the DIS (prepping to take a math certification test on my way to becoming a teacher) and things don't change a bit! ::grin::.

Once again, we see SSR - DVC Resort of Paradox <woo-OOO-ooo>. It's empty, dead and too quiet (despite the fact we've gone from 1 bldg open to what, 5 or 6 now), yet everyone's concerned that it's going to be crowded.

The one point I'll concede is that AP will probably not be big enough for all 17 bldgs. However, Disney's never shy about opportunities to make $$$, so if there are dining dollars unspent because AP is too small, I'm fairly sure that we'll see an expansion / addition 'toot sweet'.

When we stay at BCV in early December, it seems empty. Since this is a certified very busy time at a very popular resort, I have to conclude that "seeming empty" is a natural state of affairs for a DVC resort. Even when every room is occupied, you seldom see people or hear your neighbors.

Simple concept, but it makes a lot of sense. I thought back to when DW and I stayed at the Polynesian - another "spread out" resort with separate buildings. It also never seemed busy - unless we were at the pool. The hallways of our longhouse, the winding paths, even the GCH were quiet most of the time. Since there's no "choke point" like a lobby that everyone funnels through, you end up not seeing a lot of the other guests.

Seeming empty works for me

We stopped in for a visit a week ago Friday and while the Artist Pallet was empty at 11:30 am, the pool looked like there were a good number of people in it. Not many coming and going from the area though and I LOVE that. It makes it feel like I have this huge area set aside all for MY vacation enjoyment.

lol I see Dave is back spreading his sunshine about SSR too. If no one wanted to stay there, it would stop selling. You don't like OKW either (for similar reasons) so I never will understand why your don't have more of a "its not my taste" attitude rather than "ugh - what a piece of crapola". To each his own - viva la difference and all that jazz.

I totally disagree. I have stayed at SSR twice already (cancelled Beach Club to stay there) and will be back there again in early June (by choice). I love each DVC resort for difference reasons and cannot imagine that people will only stay there as "a last resort".

OKW always feels empty when we're walking around. That's good!!

WOW---how cool is that! We have been so blessed on all our previous trips where crowds-long lines etc is concerned----we have ALWAYS had a blast---the last time we were there was December of '04 and we had such a wonderful time, but the crowds in the parks were heavier than our previous trips, although NOTHING like what we've heard and read about! We have friends that have gone before and had a MISERABLE time----everything from too crowded to too hot---and yes, sometimes I think folks are asking a bit much after all it is FLORIDA IN JULY---if it weren't hot, something would be SO WRONG! Anyway, thanks for the post...our first trip home (SSR) is in September and we are SO EXCITED!

Oh yeah---I do have one question for all you SSR Folks out there---and this is probably a stupid question---but when taking Disney Transportation, what was the best route to the MK?

We were at SSR in Jan for 9 nights and I must say, it did feel somewhat empty but it was great....buses to ourselves, very few people in the pools.

Even though it felt somewhat empty, lights were on in most of the rooms in all four buildings in Congress Park.

The cool weather may have had something to do with it, maybe more people staying in their rooms

Sorry I didn't mean for the H to stand for humble, I wanted it to stand for honest. There are reasons why I feel this property will become an overflow property. None of the reasons have anything to do with how I personally feel about this Resort. Other DVC properties have draws at certain times of the year that help keep them at capacity. For instance, BWV & BCV have always been tough to get during the F&W Fest. Flower and Garden show at Epcot also seems to help book these up. VWL fil up around the Christmas. SSR doesn't have ties to theme parks and the special events they offer. This means that its one true draw is DTD. That to me really isn't much of draw as many of WDW Resorts have easy access to this. SSR will probably fill up at peak times only. This is only my HONEST opinion and like I stated before only time will tell. SSR like OKW has its fans. They seem to be very fanatical in their love of these Resorts. Don't let it fool you, however. OKW has the lowest occupancy of any DVC Resort and SSR will soon follow. The plus side to this is when you can't get your first choice or have to book last minute at least you'll have 2 Resorts to book at.
