SSR questions; need reassurance!

Just booked a two bedroom villa at SSR for 1st week in November. I have some questions, likely more to come:

1) Is there just Artists' Palette or is there another restaurant?
2) Is there a map of the resort around somewhere? I need to figure out if I should request a certain section. I hear "The Springs" is near bus stops and food.
3) Is the bus transportation OK? How long is bus ride to MK or EPCOT? How long are the waits?

I am getting a little anxious reading some negative reviews. Someone put my heart at ease, please!

We love SSR :) We have stayed there serveral times. We always take the monorail from Mk to Epcot and it takes approx. 30 minutes. I am guessing about the same for a bus since you have to wait for the bus at MK first.

The bus service from SSR is great!

The Surf and Turf Club is the table service restaurant at SSR. We always request the Springs section and love being close to the main pool and food area.

The Grandstand is the newest section to open and it looks great. It has its own "quiet pool" and they show movies there certain nights of the week.

I am not sure I helped, but don't worry you will love SSR!!!

:)

Thanks, Mom Poppins. I'll request Springs.

Are you telling me that you take the monorail to EPCOT, then catch the bus from there? Do you think that is faster? Why do you do that instead of just taking the bus from MK to SSR?

I feel some reassurance. Any others

I am also confused about why you take the monorail to Epcot from SSR?

there is no monorail from SSR. she mentioned taking the monorail from MK...which i don't understand either...(BTW, i assume you know there's no monorail from SSR but i didn't want the newbies to get confused.)

the buses worked fine for me. i stayed there last nov and had no trouble with buses to MK or epcot, but i didn't time it either...

if you need to go directly to another resort, the bus hub at downtown disney may be an option if you are in the congress park area or the DTD side of the springs or paddock. (if SSR buses are full coming back from the parks, it may provide another return option as well.)

Here is the map. Request the Springs section -- this is across the street from the main pool and buildings. SSR is a beautiful resort. The rooms are very nice. Don't be nervous.

We like Congress Park better than the Springs. If you get real lucky, you can have a really good view of Downtown Disney. It is not far to walk to the main house with the restaurants and the gift shop. The Springs has its own quiet pool. The Paddock is a bit of a walk to the main pool and restaurants, but doable. You can always take the bus - it stops last at the Springs. If you are going to spend time at Downtown Disney don't bother waiting for the bus - you can walk more quickly. Or there is a boat that runs from near the Springs to Downtown. We do sometimes take the bus back if it is late and we are tired or have a lot to carry.

If you check out the DVC -Misc. boards, there are a lot of good threads about SSR. It's been getting very good reviews from DVC members who have been recently. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I just today booked our first stay there for April 2008, and I'm really looking forward to it!

Wow, you're going to love the 2 BR villa compared to the hotel rooms at WDW. SSR is still relatively new, and the rooms are great.

It is more of a condo environment than a hotel, but it really feels like home when you open the door after a long day at the parks.

Great resort.
New and very clean.

We never waited more than 10 minutes for a bus.

Stayed in The Springs area and it was the closest to everything.

1) Is there just Artists' Palette or is there another restaurant?

The Turf Club Bar & Grill is in the same building as Artists' Palette. They serve lunch and dinner until 9pm. AP is one of the more unique counter service restaurants onsite. They have a range of flatbreads and chef specials that are often better than TS food. They're open until 11pm.

Here's a distance map to help you figure out exactly how far apart things are. SSR's area is roughly equivelant to the Boardwalk and Beach Club area.

And here are some recent pictures of the resort from my May trip.

The resort is beautiful, and now complete. It has the feeling of a luxury spa retreat. Lots of little lakes, landscaped walkways, wildlife and benches to sit and watch.

As for a section, everyone tends to have their favorite for different reasons. In general:

Congress Park gives you the view of DTD and the shortest walk there. But it is also farther from the resort center.
Springs is right at the resort center, has some beautiful water views but is also the last stop on the bus route.
Grandstand is as close to the resort center as Springs, although it has mostly golf course views. It is also closest to the ferry dock.
Paddock tends to be quieter, has the biggest lake views, and if you're near the pool there you are actually just a short bridge walk from the center.
Carousel is the smallest section, is more removed from it all by the resort entrance, and tends to be the last one people want.

3) Is the bus transportation OK? How long is bus ride to MK or EPCOT? How long are the waits?

In May my longest wait was 5 minutes. Keep in mind the bus does a loop through the resort at each section, so it'll be another 10-15 minutes if you get on at the first stop. The route is Grandstand, Carousel, Paddocks, Congress Park and Springs. From the Springs, you are between 10-15 minutes to your designated park.

The longest ride is to Animal Kingdom because it is at the exact opposite corner of the property and it stops at Blizzard Beach first.

I am getting a little anxious reading some negative reviews. Someone put my heart at ease, please!

A lot of those negative reviews were posted while the resort was still under construction and/or in comparison to smaller resort without the walkway sprawl. More recent reviews have been very positive now that the resort is finished and people are learning the advantages to all those walkways. My favorite activity was to get up at dawn, grab my refillable mug, get some hot chocolate at AP and stroll around the resort until breakfast.

Oh, just so you know, there are pools in 4 of the 5 sections. The main pool has the water slides and zero entry. Grandstand has water play areas and movies at night. Congress Park's has a view of DTD and Paddocks is beautiful for an afternoon retreat. There are also BBQ areas and playgrounds.

Enjoy your 2 bedroom! I'll be there the month before in a 2bedroom of my own.

Sorry about the Mk to Epcot by Monorail comment. :) I thought she was wanting to go from MK TO Epcot. We do this often. We board the monorail at MK and ride it down to Epcot for the afternoon. It works out nicely since MK is so busy in the afternoon. :)

For eating out, we stayed in Congress Park, and it's a quick couple of minutes' walk to DTD where there's plenty to choose from (our favourite is Wolfgang Puck Express - always have leftovers!). The two bedroom is perfect for stocking up on groceries and having a relaxing lunch in the room mid-day to unwind - it's so 'homey' I don't mind whipping up a few meals when we go (saves us $$$ too!). Enjoy - DH and I love SSR.

We've always stayed in this section. Nice walk to DTD and away from any
hustle/bustle. It's a wonderful resort and I hope you will love it as much as
we do. :thumbsup2
