My 2 DS (16 & 12) have asked for sports jerseys for Christmas (1 football and 1 basketball) - and I'm amazed at how expensive they are! Does anyone know where to find them for less? The football one - Jason Taylor (Miami Dolphins) is $75! I checked ebay, but want to make sure that they're authentic and good quality (hard to tell from pictures).

Last year the Steelers were doing VERY well and Ben Rothlisberger (SP???) was HOT HOT HOT so we wanted to get jerseys for our DDs. We looked and looked and were unable to find authentic jerseys for very good prices. We ended up getting them at the "Steeler Store" full price.

If we did not care about whose number is on the jersey, you can often get authentic jerseys at JC Penney for 25% off. And be sure to look in the children's department. The children's sizes are at least $10 cheaper and the sizes run up to a 16-18.

Hope that this helps. :)

$75 is probably a REPLICA jersey. Authentic jerseys will run about twice as much, if not more. Replicas are most of what you'll find at retail stores. Look for endorsement by the NFL or NBA to make sure they are officially licensed.

Yes I was going to say the Replicas are around $75 for football jerseys(check out the sporting goods websites to get an idea- like Dick's sporting goods or Modells. Real ones from the NFL shop run around $300. The ones I have seen anyway. I feel your pain. My little guy wants a baseball jersey- authentic Soriano.

FWIW - we have a number of replica football jerseys from the '90's that are in very good shape after wearing and washing. Wash in cold water, line dry or tumble low.

The fabric is heavy and the names/numbers are screened. I think the authentic jerseys have stitched appliques.

To tell if they are authentic, they will have a triangle shaped NFL patch at the V-neck line. Reebok has the license for the jersey's, the going price is $75.00. These jersey have iron decal names and numbers. They also have NFL logo in the bottom left hand corner of the shirt.
Official jerseys are more money over $100. These jerseys you can tell, because the numbers and names are sewn on and not ironed on. They also have the triangle NFL patch at the neck line. They also have the NFL logo in the bottom left hand corner of the shirt

There are cheaper ones out that have the NFL logo down in the left hand corner of the jersey but no patch at the neckline. They run about $40. These you can find at any discount store.

Retro jerseys are even more around the $200-300 range, these are the jersey from famous players usually in the old colors of the teams from 10-20 years ago.

Thanks for all of the quick replies! I probably shouldn't have used the word "authentic" - we are looking for replica. One ebay seller mentioned (in small print) that there were some "mistakes" on the tag or something, which made me think that there are some knock-offs around.

It seems every time my boys get a new jersey, the player gets traded, injured or whatever, so they stop wearing the jersey. I have a hard time paying $75 for that to happen, considering other items on their Christmas lists.

We have 2 jerseys where the print has started to come off in the wash and I have followed all washing directions carefully. One happened after only 2 washings!! Of course, that is DS12's favorite jersey (Owens) so I think he holds it against me!! Of course, now the Owens jersey has become obsolete LOL!

I guess I'll watch for sales (Finish Line, etc) - we don't have Value City in our area. Our JCPenney only carries Patriots/Celtics jerseys, which my boys don't like (BTW DS12 is 5'7" weighs 135, so we're definitely into adult sizes!!).

DS16 has one retro jersey (Michael Jordan) - he says retro is the way to go, because you don't have the issue of the player leaving the team - it's all history!!

Thanks again for all of your suggestions!

We have had the best luck with prices finding replica jerseys in stores in the city of the team - i.e. buy Dolphins jerseys from a Miami Sears, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. Most will ship them to you and are still cheaper than buying at sporting good stores.

Since Reebok is the official outfitter of the NFL...Reebok is the place to buy them. And since you're in Massachusetts - Reebok is in your backyard. The Reebok outlets have them for significantly less than anywhere else. I can't guarantee the exact jersey that you want, but I would suggest checking out one of the outlets.

You might want to check this out, I found it on Slickdeals, I was shopping for jersey for my DH too. Posted by gp10sne1:

Received an email for 15% off at foxsportsgear.com. I've used them before and they have the same stuff as MLB and NFL.com for lower prices.

Worth a try if you are looking for sports merch. Coupon code xmassale.

I spent the last week or so looking at local stores including the Reebok outlet, but couldn't find the specific player. They had the exact one I need on foxsportsgear and with the discount code it came to $69.48 including shipping. Thanks so much for the site and code! Now for the NBA jersey - the search continues. We live in MA and both boys want Miami teams, which are not plentiful in our area - thank goodness for the internet!!

Thanks again for all of your help!

And we are nowhere near Miami!

I always order from fansedge.com -- kids' sizes are about $55.

I was going to second checking the Reebok outlet. I got DS's there and for about 1/2 off of what it was everywhere else.

I've bought many Authenic and Replica Jerseys off e-bay just check their rating and you should be OK..
I have a RAY LEWIS auth. and compaired it to a$400 jersey a friend has and you can't tell the difference.
Your kids won't care .

Reebok outlet is the best! I was there on Black Friday morning and bought two Patriots jerseys for around $20 each. The retail price on these is $65 and up. They did have other teams, but not all of the NFL. I wish they did.

I believe that Nike is the official sponsor of the NBA, but I could be wrong. I know I saw NBA jersey's while I was out shopping last week. I'll keep an eye out for you for Miami players.
