SpongeBob Squarepants??? Never thought I'd write this word....

I don't let DD 4 watch it. I don't like it and I don't want her watching it. There are plenty of other shows out there that she enjoys that are more appropriate. She hears about him at school and of course you see the merchandise everywhere. Whenever she sees something she'll say "I see spongebob, you don't like spongebob mommy" and move on. She's never asked to watch it and I've never had to tell her she can't. She just knows I don't like it. It's not that I think its a bad show, I just don't think there's any value to it.

Plus I have a hard enough time with her using words she hears at school like stupid or shut up.

While I don't get it (does that mean I'm too grown up?), everyone else in my house (including dh who is the same age as me) loves Spongebob. My kids are 8 and 12 and have been watching him for years.

WOW!! I am 40 years old and watch SPSP with my kids, and I didnt realize all of the "sexual clues":rolleyes1 I think if you look at the show in the eyes of a child that would never come to mind.
bikini botton, he's a sponge, crabby patty, Sqidward's nose
I had to read this a couple of times before I caught on!!
I dont think my 4 yr old or my 10 year old for that matter know what crabs are, what a "sponge" is, or what squidwards nose could be!!:scared1:

I have Sprout on demand...do you have a regular channel or on demand :confused3 ? The good night show sounds great!

We have Comcast digital cable and it's one of the included channels. Do you have to pay for Demand?? I never use our on demand thing so I'm not sure what it is. The Good Night show is on every night from 6-10 PM. Check out www.sproutonline.com.

I never caught any of this either - if it's going over my head I'm sure it's going over my 4 year old's head. I never ever would have even thought there were sexual clues or undertones in Sponge Bob and going forward I'm still not going to see it.

Do I think its always appropriate? No. Are there sexual undertones? Yes; bikini botton, he's a sponge, crabby patty, Sqidward's nose, etc,.

Does all that go over their heads at this point? Yes.

I totally agree!

My girls are 11(almost 12), 8, 6 &3. The only one that likes Spongebob is my 3 yr old. She LOVES him!!! I really don't like it much, but watching 1 show a day isn't going to hurt:)

edited to show a pic of my 6 yr old w/Spongebob. My 3 yr old wouldn't get near him.....go figure???

OK, so I still don't get it, but I guess I don't want to. I like to watch through the eyes of my daughter.

I don't like Spongebob. I've only seen a couple of episodes but, in the ones I've seen, the characters aren't very nice to each other -- calling each other names, saying "shut up" and stuff like that. I also can't stand his voice.

So we don't watch Spongebob... but we probably watch some stuff that other people don't like (DS is crazy about Pokemon right now), so I say "to each his/her own."

For what it's worth, when DS was around 3 he started noticing SBSP merchandise but he would say "Look, Mommy. It's cheese!" Then, when he was four a little girl came up and said, "It's not cheese and his name is Spongebob!" so DS started calling him "Spongebob the cheese." LOL! Now that DS is almost 7, he knows all about Spongebob from the other kids at school, but he never asks to watch it.

I'll admit that we watch SBSP in our house. My 2 yr. old LOVES it! My oldest (6) has always liked it and I think he first saw it when he was around 4. We all laugh during that silly show, :lmao:.

I see nothing wrong with SBSP and don't really see the sexual undertones some people mention. I just see a happy-go-lucky character that loves his job, loves his friends, and who tries to always see the good. On our next WDW trip I'm tempted to take the family over to the Nick hotel to eat so my boys can see SB, it would be a highlight I'm sure.

Meow. ;)

Yes my kids ages 10, 8, and 5 watch SpongeBob or as DS called him when he was 3, my sponge! :lmao:

Those are the reasons I don't let me children watch it. It may go over their heads for now but why even let it go into their brains at all? they are only innocent for so long-why add anything that is questionable? Now- I know most do not agree with me and that is why the world is great-to each his own!!:thumbsup2

I posted above that I don't let my kids watch SBSP for other reasons. In the few episodes I've seen, I didn't catch any innuendo -- but I totally agree with you. Even if they don't "get it", why expose them to it anyway? That's why my kids have never seen the Shrek movies. IMHO, those are pretty "adult" even if they are animated. I'm one of the most naive people you'll meet when it comes to that kind of stuff and even *I* got it in Shrek!

(singing) F - is for friends who do stuff together
U- is for U and Me
N- is for newhere and netime at all ...down here in the deep blue
sea

F- is for frolic thru all the flowers
U - is for ukelele
N - is for nose pickin' sharing gum,and sand lickin'
here with my best buddy...

HUH ? Oh sorry yes we watch Sponge Bob my kids love it ! Well I'm
off to go jelly fishing :rotfl:

I am another one that doesn't see any value in the show. The characters are mean and use words like stupid and shut-up - which we do not use in our house. There are plenty of other entertaining shows with out the negatives to them.

My kids love it, BUT I don't let them watch it I don't think the show humor is apprioate sp?? for them at ages 3 and 2

We are a spongebob loving family:happytv: .We just thinks it funny.

Us too!

I agree. I have seen *many* episodes of SBSP's and not once did this EVER cross my mind.

My 7 year old dd is quite the comedian, and she loves SB. I think watching it when she was younger probably has a lot to do with the fact that she has a great sense of humor and loves to make up jokes. When she gets frustrated, she says things like "Oh, Barnacles", or "Tarter Sauce", which is a lot better than the phrases I hear other kids her age saying, so I don't think it's done any harm.

all of my kids watch it on occasion. Even my 1 and 2yo.

I can't recall how that yellow nightmare entered our home, but he did and it doesn't look like he's leaving any time soon! Oh, I can't say I hate Spongebob, I even think the shows pretty funny from time to time and my kids Alex 9 and Adam 5 can't get enough of him! In fact I can't tell who the boys want to meet more there at US, Spongebob, or Spider-man.

My boys are 6 and 9 and have been watching spongebob for quite sometime. I have even been known to watch it with them. Which comes in handy for me and my DH when we play nick scene it with them. I can't believe the innuendos some people talk about. I have never once thought of it or caught on to it until I seen it here on the board.

My kids are 3.5 and 5.5 and they watch it. I know a lot of parents that don't let their kids but I find it funny. I'll find myself chuckling. My preference is the more educational shows- Dora, Diego, Little Einsteins but everyone can use a switch occasionally. My biggest show issue is commercials. I prefer the shows that don't have them between 2 episodes. We use a DVR but that way I can do a chore and not have to keep checking on it.
