This might not be the right forum, but does anyone know if there is a "Song of the South" movie? I am trying to get my 5 1/2yo familiar with the characters.. Brer Rabbit, etc .. to make him more interested in going on Splash Mountain. But, I haven't found anything ...

Any ideas would be great!

There is an old movie, "Song of the South". My understanding is that it has never been released on video, possibly because it has some politically incorrect issues.

It was released in Europe and available on eBay but you need a video adapter to watch it as their VHS system is different from ours. I heard Disney was going to release the DVD here next year, but that is only a rumor. I hope they do, I love the music!

I really hope they'll release this movie soon, although I'm not holding my breath. I remember seeing parts of it when I was little, but that's about it. Its a shame, b/c the entire SM ride is themed after it and children today won't have any idea who these characters are :confused3

My FIL loved this movie as a kid, so we tracked a U.S. VHS copy on ebay for him a few years ago. I haven't watched it, but I understand that some of the characters are offensive stereotypes.

I wonder: Would people accept or decry a retelling of the stories sanitized of all racial slurs and other inappropriate themes?

::MickeyMo I love this movie! I remember watching it when I was a little girl on the Disney channel. When I first rode Splash Mountain, I was like, Holy cow! It's based on the movie. I know I have it on VHS...somewhere...I taped it off TV. I'd love it if it came out on DVD. ::MinnieMo

My understanding has always been that there are some with racially motivated opposition to the films re-release, but that the biggest problem was the music licensing. That could be wrong, but is what I recall. I do have this on Laser Disc, and have had it for quite a while, I hope they do eventually release it on dvd.

No group or organization has stated any opposition to the release of the film. There have been no threats of boycotts that has kept the film in the vault. It appears that up to this point Disney feels the risk of negative "racial" PR that might result with its release would outway the financial benefits.

Have ya'll seen this movie! :earseek: It is loosely based on the Uncle Remus stories. The concocted storyline is about a slave, Uncle Remus, who befriends the Planter's two white children and tells them his "stories" in "typical" poor-slave-talk English. There are some droll scenes of the little children frolicking down the trail, followed by their own trusty little slave boy, and there's a "Mammy" in the kitchen cooking for her "folkses". All this leads up to the dreadful climax when one of he children gets sick and dies, which causes all the slaves to come to the Big House to mourn the death of Young Massa. Wailing & keening ensue...

Now, you tell me--how well do you think this movie would go over here in the USA? The stories of Brer Rabbit and Brer Bear are good enough to stand alone and do not depict racial stereotypes. But the rest of the SOTS storyline would be very uncomfortable for most people, particularly African-Americans.

Cathy--doesn't have to be black to get this one :rolleyes1

I'm sure the original stories of B'rer Rabbit and his friends/enemies are still around! If you'd like your kids to know the stories behind Splash Mountain, how about getting them a book! :rolleyes1

My wife has two antiques... Unfortunately, I don't believe the stories are still being published in their original form.

I have a copy that I purchased several years ago. I did a search for SOTS and found a site in europe. They sold me two copies, one is the original european format and the other is a vhs copy. Unfortunately I can't remember the site. If I can locate it I will post on this thread.

Minkydog, the boy does not die in the end. He is injured, but recovers. I think in your impassioned retelling, you may have gotten carried away. Storytelling does that.

Mr. Blue Bird's on my shoulder, it's the truth, it's factual, everything is satisfactual. Zippidy doo da zippidy day, my o my what a wonderful day. sorry couldn't resist. love that little blue bird. great movie. only disney movie I really remember.
