Splash mountain refurbishment

The refurbishment of Splash Mountain won't happen at the earliest until 2023 now. The theme is now back up in the air
and is no longer Princess of the frog.

Sorry, but is there anyone else here totally devastated about this new refurbishment?
The theme music of splash mountain for us meant we were at Disney and that our holiday had begun. It is sad to see it go.

Do you reckon they will keep the music somewhere else?
You are correct as this was pure Disney magic. One out of a thousand had no idea of any association to the South, slavery or and defamation to any group of race of people. It is pure fun and should remain that way.

I wanted to start a thread to express how appalled I am by this "refurbishment." Song of the South has already been buried in some deep, dark vault; isn't that enough? No one cares (and few even know) that Splash Mountain is inspired by a supposedly racist movie. Splash is a beloved ride the way it is, and I fear they will only ruin it, or present us with an inferior version with less AAs. That would be a hell of a raw deal, just to make some "woke" nuts happy.

yeah i mean..those darn "woke nuts". why should anyone care what others think and feel!?!?

this whole thing is such a travesty.... 🙄

(There's always one...and may times, many...)

I've said it before in this thread and I will say it again. They are not going to start this refurb until the 50th celebrations are done with. It's just not going to happen. Expect it to start Spring 2023.

"Others"? No one seems to care about the thoughts and feelings of the vast majority. Why do we always have to bend over backwards for some micro-minority of the population?

It's clear from this thread that most Disney fans don't like this "refurbishment." What happened, maybe one or two people "took offense" at Splash Mountain, just because of its long-buried inspiration? So Disney just folds and plans a multi-million dollar retheme which no one else wants? What about all of us who love the ride the way it is?

(Sarcasm alert) I'm an agnostic, so I don't believe in anything supernatural. Therefore, I'm going to complain to Disney about the "offensive" Haunted Mansion. I demand a retheme, or me and my agnostic/atheist friends will protest. Hurry up, Disney, who cares about all the fans who love the Mansion?

To be honest, there are very, very few that I like.

Tiki Room -> Tiki Room under new management = HORRIBLE
ExtraTERROREstrial Encounter -> Stitch's Great Escape = HORRIBLE
Test Trak v. 1.0 -> Test Track v 2.0 = not horrible, but not great (i preferred the education aspect to what anti-lock brakes did, and things like that).
Journey into Imagination -> Journey into Imagination 2.0 = HORRIBLE
Living Seas -> The seas with Nemo and Friends = not horrible, but not great.
The Great Movie Ride -> Micky Minnie Runaway Railroad = Not good.
Maelstrom -> Frozen Ever After = okay..... this is one that I didn't absolutely hate. Although I hesitate to say I love it.

The only ones I really liked were the tear down and rebuilds. I.E. Horizons to Mission Space; World of Motion to Test Track. [Edit.... in retrospect, I am not sure I did entirely like those either....]

Minor updates were hit and miss. I.E. Spaceship Earth (ok), COP (ok), but PotC (awful)

I will grant that I have not seen HTH -> Guardians of the Galaxy; but I gotta say I love HTH so I am skeptical.

Bottom line.... They do not have a good track record for my tastes when then they do overlays.

Forgot Mr Toad's Wild Ride to Winnie the Pooh and If you had Wings to Buzz's Space Ranger Spin.... Of course those for most were good upgrades (yes I know some loved Mr. Toad... whoever he was). But I agree for the most part (maybe not about Frozen)... only thing I miss about Maelstrom is the walk-on status it had.

I just road Splash for the last time (again)... has nothing really to do with the Movie. But I wonder how many don't understand the story is based, after the Civil War - even Uncle Remus states, after being told that he cannot read any more stories to Johnny, "I'm a free man; I don't have to take this". This was a reconstruction era movie... there were no slaves in it.

Truly laughable, thanks.

Glad you said you were being sarcastic (which is against the rules on this board, fyi) because what you wrote is such a wild misunderstanding of half of the words you typed! lol

While you may dismiss 1 or 2 people - I can assure you that (A) it's more than that (in my family alone), (B) Disney isn't going to cater to 1 or 2 people (well, Mariah staying in the castle aside), (C) do you honestly think WDW doesn't do research and/or completely ignores the surveys they frequently use, and (D) the concern is about far more than its inspiration. Also, there are some obvious issues with saying, "Well, we're going to keep doing something ___ way because 'the majority' agree with me."

I don’t think they’ll take it down before the crowded summer months. I’d say fall 2023 at earliest.

Your first paragraph is confusing and indecipherable. As for the second one...do you have inside info? Sources?

Sarcasm is against the rules now? Man, if I had a dollar for every post I've read that included sarcasm, I could retire today.

Most Disney park visitors neither know nor care that Splash is based on Song of the South. Most guests are not uber fans who know the background of the rides. They say stuff like "oh, I liked the Haunted House." They are tourists, not purists.

And among those who do know, it's clear from this thread (and other posts I've read) that most fans don't want Disney to mess with Splash Mountain! Once again, a minority is dictating to the wishes of the majority.

I've seen and answered lots of surveys. I've never seen one word about Splash Mountain in any of them.

https://www.disboards.com/help/guidelines/ re: board guidelines (I don't really care about sarcasm - but you can get points here for it, so be aware).

Sorry you had a hard time understanding my first sentence. I was saying that your "sarcastic" hypothesis re: agnosticism makes no sense. Agnostics don't necessarily rule out everything supernatural. The ghosts in the Haunted Mansion have no religious connection. And to translate what you wrote to this situation, it seems like you're saying people's perspective is:

"I'm anti-racism/anti-racist and therefore don't believe in upholding racism. Therefore I'm going to complain to Disney about the offensive Splash Mountain. I demand a retheme, or me and other people against racism will protest. Who cares about the fans who love the ride?

That's ... an interesting thing to be against. Also, I'm not sure the change was demanded nor was a protest threatened (and as someone pretty involved in both realms of anti-racism and Disney, I think I would've heard - but I miss things). For what it's worth, pre-covid, I began putting together a book about how WDW informs/mirrors about race in America (and that's a moving target). But - there's a lot to mine; I had 8 or so chapters outlined.

I've definitely commented in surveys about my experience of Splash Mountain. I know others who have. There are definitely sections where surveys ask about your experience. I'm sure some (maybe many) don't want a retheme. And part of me gets it (change is hard, for some it feels like a charge that a thing they enjoy has some racist connotations and underpinnings, etc). And yet sometimes we do things that aren't supported by the majority because it's the right thing to do. Disney didn't ask for a show of hands.

Even if Song of the South is racist (and how can you judge that when no one can watch the movie today?) how on earth is Splash Mountain "racist"? It's all animals!

But besides that, my biggest concern is that they will ruin a great ride. First of all if they close the ride for a year or more, that's less capacity at the MK, and it's the only water ride on hot days. Second, the retheme could be a big disappointment. How are they going to match the greatness of the ride as it is now? Daunting task. My biggest dread would be if they replace the AAs with screens. How are they going to replace all those AAs anyway? Developing new AAs is a huge task, so I feel like we're likely to get short changed.
