I read this report:

http://travel.latimes.com/daily-deal-blog/index.php/safety-concerns-for--1235/

Disneyland has raised the height requirement for the Splash Mountain log flume ride to one of the highest levels in the amusement park industry out of concerns for rider safety.

The “temporary height restriction” for the front seat of Splash Mountain has been raised from 40 inches to 60 inches so the Anaheim theme park can “evaluate options to improve comfort and safety,” Disneyland spokesman Rob Doughty said in a written statement.

MiceAge columnist David “Darkbeer” Michael reported that small children who sometimes duck under the front of the hollow log have been injured. Disneyland’s Doughty said no specific incident triggered the “short term” change on the restraintless ride.

Built in 1989, the Disneyland attraction can accommodate four to six riders who straddle bench seats in a single file.

Did this article just come out, Mary Jo? The "temporary restriction" has been in place at least since November 2007 (maybe earlier). I was hoping they would have corrected the problem by now.

There was no such restriction in September 2008, so I don't know how it could have been in place since 2007. It was 40" when we were there and my 3 1/2 year old who was 41 1/2" had no issues getting on SM. In fact he loved it!

The restriction is only for the very front seat of the log. It is still 40 inches to ride, you just have to have an adult or someone 60 inches tall in the front seat.

Thank heaven! Splash is one of the things my 41 inch son is looking forward to the most.

Yeah, I think this restriction has been up for awhile. In October when we rode Splash, a little boy who was in line in front of us wanted to sit single rider in the front, but the CM told him no after measuring him because he wasn't 60" yet.

I dont see any issue with it. I know kids want to ride up front but if it is safer for them not to then I am fine with that. As a parent I just want my kids to be safe and that certainly trumps their wanting to sit up front. :)

My 43 incher rode this in Jan '08....I was worried but now i think this has been lifted, simply from our experience. My DD was just under 5 ft then I believe as well.

 Whoops, sorry guys. I saw this article, and didn't read the date posted. I found it at the bottom of the article - Jan 2008.

Since my own are both already young adults I haven't paid attention to the height restrictions for awhile now.

It's okie dokie, MJ! I don't pay ANY attention to height restrictions either, the only reason why I remember is because we were right behind the little boy and the CM had ME sit in the front and the little boy sat behind DBF and I got SOAKED! If I wouldn't have gotten soaked, I wouldn't have remembered! :)

It's definitely for the front seat only. This is one of my family's favortie rides. The first time that we went the CM told us to sit in front you have to be over 5 feet. Since my oldest son is taller than I am, he is 11 and about 5'6" I make him sit up front. He always gets soaked!!

Did they ride in the very front? This restriction is/was only about the very first seat.

I just think it's funny b/c I'm only 5'3", which I know is shorter than American female average but it's not THAT short, but I'm only 3 inches tall enough to sit in that front seat! My mom would have barely made the cut-off, and my grandma never would have.

I think the restriction is still in place. We were there December 2-5 of 2008 and rode several times with my dd who is 49" and her friend who is 53" tall. Neither of the girls were allowed to ride in the front seat. The two times we were seated in the front rows, the CM told us an adult had to be in the first seat.

They were both allowed to ride just not in the very first seat.

This was in place for us as well, however they let us leave the front seat empty and my 9 yr old sat in the 2nd seat, so she still got the feeling of sitting in the front, with nobody in front of her. :-) We did this a couple of times with different CMs.

We always go in October. My dd would ride in the very front of the log because she's a daredevil! She started riding it at age 4 and is now 8. They changed the height requirement for the front seat last year *I think* because that's the first year my twins went to DL (age 4) and they never got to try out the front. All of them love the ride anyway and it hasn't been a big deal not to get the very front.

I have to laugh at Molly's observation about the height! I am only 1" over so I am barely legal :lmao:

My DD is not 60" and has been in the front seat of this ride many times.....or so I thought.. I just went back and looked at our photos and there is an empty seat in front of her.... I never knew this....

That's funny Molly and Dizme!!!

At least you have SOME advantage on the restriction! I'm dead on 60" or 5 foot nothing!
I wonder if I'll ever ride up front again! I'm only going to shrink from here on out...LOL!!!!

Stacked shoes. :)

Most definitely time to wear high wedgie shoes, or high heels, if ye dare!
Don't forget what some parents do too. They ball up socks and place them in the heel of their children's shoes. Of course adults can do this too,if need be.
I am such a rebel. Actually, I do not need to follow my own bad tips, cause I'm 5 foot 8 inch's.
