Spinoff- High school Yearbook

Just wanted to see how many people get there yearbook before the end of the school year. When I was in school, we got ours the last week of school. I think we got a spring supplement later. My daughter's yearbook is given out usually the day or so before school begins the next year. I see some people are saying this also. That just seems weird to me. She will likely be an editor when she is a senior, I keep telling her she should suggest a change in the distribution dates. Most of the seniors are already off to college when they are given out, so a lot don't bother to buy one.

My daughter is a senior and on the yearbook staff. They finished the work on the yearbook and sent it all to the printer the first week of March and they will be getting it the of the 16th(the last week of school - yes, they are going until June 24th). There will also be a supplement part with all the spring sports, prom, and graduation stuff in it that will be mailed to everyone who bought the yearbook, that will happen in early August.

My daughter just got hers on the last Wednesday of school. She loved being able to get autographs from all her friends while they were still in school.

BTW, her yearbook was *beautiful*. I was sad to hear that other DISers yearbooks were terrible .

DD's school gives theirs out about 2 weeks before school is done for summer. Spring sports are included, but are the previous year's records, pictures, etc. DD had her freshman JV soccer picture in her sophomore yearbook (seems weird to me- seniors won't get their senior season pictures unless they buy the yearbook the year after they graduate.). I wish they did a spring supplement like we did when I was in high school.

We get them the last week of school.

Graduation photos are not included in the yearbook. but there are plenty of references to the seniors including "senior ads" where the parents congratulate their seniors for graduating.

Spring sports, prom and graduation are not included in our yearbooks. They are hard-backed. Not sure how many pages but its not a super huge school either.

If the baseball team, for instance, goes to state or something, they will do a big spread in the next year's book and do a supplement to send out to all the senior players.

DD's is $65 for the yearbook and then you can add their name to the cover and icons (like music notes, a football, a mascot, etc.) for an additional cost (a couple of dollars for their name and, I think, it was a dollar for each icon). And if you want a plastic cover or additional autograph pages you can get those for an additional charge too.

They can either order the books from the yearbook adviser or they can be ordered online.

The hard-back yearbook was delivered a week or so before school was out to allow time for signings, etc. It did not include graduation or end-of-year photos.

Seniors also received a soft-back "Senior Supplement" that was mailed to them later in the summer. It included graduation pictures, the Most Likely To list, additional pictures of memorable moments throughout senior year, and a lot of Remember When pictures.

I think it was a nice compromise. I didn't really care about other classes' graduations and senior festivities anyway.

My dd's yearbook was $110, plus $15 for the nameplate. There were other items available, like a dust jacket, additional autograph pages and things like that.

Not sure if this is what all hs students do now but it seems they all sign on the autograph pages, rather than by their photos in the yearbook.

When I was in high school and we signed yearbooks, you would either sign by your senior photo, or on a page that had a picture of you on a sports team or club. If their was a candid picture of you, you would sign by that. Your best friends were the only ones who signed on the inside front or back cover. We didn't have any autograph pages. My dd thought that was strange. She said no one signs on the pages of the yearbook, only on the autograph pages.

This is how it was done at my school as well. I bought the year book the year after I graduated so that I would have my last softball season. Prom from the previous year was also included, but that was fine bc we had junior prom, not senior. Graduation was never included. I actually have 7 yearbooks total bc middle school was included in the same book with the high school (small school, we were all in one building too). The books cost $35-50, thought this was 10 years ago.

ds's was $55 this year-granted, his was only just about 100 pages long, but when you've only got about 120 total in grades 9-12 it's plenty sufficient.

dd was on yearbook staff for 2 years, and I was back in a much bigger high school (late 70's), so I have some ideas on how they've kept their costs down. no yearbook camp (we didn't have this when I did it either), ad sales (both to private local businesses and senior parents), no professional photographer provided by the year book company. not sure if the professional photographer is even the norm anymore, but when I was on yearbook forever ago part of the contract with the yearbook company included 1 day's use of the company's professional photographer who would come to school and any local to the school events on a given day to take as many photos as possible. the yearbook staff then got to pick and choose which photos they wanted in the book. I have to imagine this increased the cost of the yearbook quite a bit.
the kid's on the yearbook staff do all the photos (with exception of the regular individual school pictures), and they send out an e-mail blast to parents usually in the fall, winter and early spring to ask for any candid photos parents might have taken.

despite the book being given out at ds's school the last week in may, it contained photos of spring. the spring sport teams were photographed, prom (occurs in march), spring spirit week (I think that was in early april)-but the only thing graduation related was a page with photos of and statements from the valedictorian and salutatorian (and these were not selected until the first week in may), so I suspect there may be an arrangement with the company wherein the page has been pre-designed and there's a late submission allowed to provide the photos and text.

any kind of championships that occur after the submission cut-off get a mention in the following year's book-there's no way they could hold off for publication later in the summer to include it in the current year, we've got some national championships that don't occur for the current year's team until October of next year (and yup, for those this year's seniors who are on the team make arrangements to attend).

Same. I think, personally, that any other way is kind of stupid. Who wants last years year book when you have moved on (possibly even from the school?).

Last day of school here is Thurs and no yearbooks yet. In middle school they got them the last week. This is my dd's first year of high school so I am assuming the same but after reading this maybe she's not getting it yet

DD's was $80- but if we had ordered in the fall, the price would have been a bit less, around $72, I think. Personalization and other extras cost more $$.

Her HS is pretty good sized- about 1500 students. The yearbook is hardbound and is about 200 pages or so. I'm not sure how the books are produced- there is a yearbook staff, but I don't know if they have a camp or professional photographer.

I'm sure it is very different from when I was a yearbook staffer, back in the dark ages. We hand typed the copy in the correctly sized blocks, hand cropped pictures, and made up galley sheets to send to the publisher. It was painstaking, exhausting work- no computers back then! I was on staff for 3 years, and it was a daily class all year.

I honestly don't know... you would think it would be simple to do, right?? The spring sports didn't have their team photos taken until the very end of their seasons (early May). They had tryouts and picked teams in January and February, and I'm sure the yearbook hadn't been turned into the publisher that early.

It seems silly to have the previous year's photos in the current yearbook- it would even be better to have a spring supplement come out during the summer that the kids could add into the book.

DD won't be attending her old high school for junior or senior year, but she won't get to have the pictures of her sophomore soccer season unless she spends the $$ for a yearbook next year (when she won't be going there anymore). We just bought the team picture- she can tape it in the back of the current yearbook.
