Spin off - What exactly is a baby shower?

Here in the South we always have a party for a baby. Typically the first and second babies get full blown showers with cake, gifts, games, brunch, etc.

The 3rd child will probably just have a get-together with Mom's closest friends at a friends house. There will probably be cake and gifts but it wouldn't be as extravagent as the first two baby showers.

No men are EVER in attendance. :)

Here and back home in VA, generally the food is finger food, maybe some salad, and cake. As for multiple showers, most people do have smaller showers for a 2nd baby, particularly if the kids are different genders. One thing I've found with military families is that we tend to try to get rid of a crib or other large items as soon as the kid is out of it, because we have so little space in our houses, and weight limits for when we move. Therefore it's normal to have multiple showers because we no longer have the stuff we need! We went to a baby shower last month, and the mom to be was going to just get a hand me down crib from the thrift store on base, because after the baby outgrew it, she'd get rid of it anyhow.

True about the moving and the weight limits LOL! One nice thing is I got passed a lot of nice things...bouncy's and Bumbo's and clothes, etc. At my shower I got lots of little necessities (bath items, diapers) and everyone enjoyed a reason for cake! (especially Costco cake!)
